The giant bedroom was completely quiet.
Lexianna lay in the center of the big, soft bed. She was fast asleep. Her chest moved up and down in a slow, steady rhythm. The scary fever was gone. The bad leaking had stopped. Her silver hair was spread out on the white pillows like a halo of moonlight. After all the danger and the magic, she finally looked peaceful and safe.
Arkin stood by the side of the bed. He reached down with his big hands and very gently pulled the thick, warm blanket right up to her chin. He watched her for a long minute. He wanted to stay right there. He wanted to curl up around her and never let her go.
But he could not stay in bed. There was a giant, terrifying problem they had to fix.
Koa stood on the other side of the room near the doors. He did not say a word. He just tilted his head toward the outside. Arkin gave a sharp nod.
