Chapter 7 - Compound Living: The Art of Being Related

If Helix Academy was a battlefield disguised as a school, the Vale Compound was a battlefield disguised as a palace.

Vesper learned quickly that wealth amplified pettiness.

The Siblings

Dorian treated her like a temporary inconvenience.

Cassian treated her like a puzzle.

Kael treated her like a threat.

Lyra treated her like a celebrity.

At dinner, Grandmother Vale announced:

"Bloodlines will correct imbalance."

Vesper replied, "I wasn't aware I was imbalanced."

Dorian coughed into his wine.

Cassian hid a smile.

Kael watched her carefully.

"You speak as if you're not trying to prove something."

She met his eyes.

"I'm not."

"That's the problem."

The Training Hall Incident

Lucian insisted she train formally.

The hall was lined with reinforced alloys.

A perfect space for density modulation.

"Control," Lucian instructed. "Not spectacle."

She inhaled.

Softened.

Hardened.

Shifted mass between states seamlessly.

Lucian's expression shifted from skepticism to something else.

Recognition.

Pride.

It unsettled her.

Kael stepped into the arena.

"Allow me," he said.

He removed his gloves.

Touched the reinforced wall.

His skin rippled.

Shifted metallic.

He mimicked her hardened density.

But imperfectly.

Micro-fractures spidered across his arm.

He winced.

She stepped forward instinctively.

"Stop."

"I don't need your—"

His arm destabilized.

She grabbed him.

Hardened around him.

Stabilized his density with her own field.

The fractures stopped spreading.

Silence fell.

They were close.

Too close.

He pulled away first.

"Don't do that again."

"Don't break yourself then."

Lucian observed everything.

The Younger Sister Conspiracy

Lyra orchestrated "Sibling Bonding Night."

Which meant locking them in the west lounge.

With games.

And wine.

Dorian refused to participate.

Cassian stayed.

Kael remained because leaving would appear weak.

Vesper remained because she was curious.

They played a truth-game variant common among elite children.

"What's your worst fear?" Lyra asked.

"Public incompetence," Dorian answered immediately.

Cassian shrugged. "Disappointing Father."

Lyra grinned. "Boredom."

Kael paused.

"Obsolescence."

Silence.

All eyes shifted to Vesper.

She considered.

"Becoming something I didn't choose."

The air shifted.

Kael met her gaze.

Understanding flickered.

Then it vanished.
