Miranda looked at Raven and began, "Double Bubbles—"
Bubbles immediately turned her head toward Miranda and said firmly, "It's Bubbles now."
Miranda paused, then nodded once. "Alright. Bubbles."
Bubbles straightened and said brightly, "That's better."
Miranda turned back to Raven. "Now, Bubbles has some special abilities as a house elf."
She began explaining in a measured tone, outlining the differences Raven needed to understand. "House elves are capable of teleportation without wands. They can bypass magical barriers, wards, and security enchantments that would stop wizards. They can enter protected locations freely, including places warded against Apparition. Traditionally, house elves are enslaved to wizarding families and bound by magic to obey them."
Miranda continued, her expression sharpening slightly. "Bubbles, as I mentioned earlier, is a free house elf. But she isn't just any house elf."
She explained Bubbles' lineage carefully. "Bubbles belongs to a superior species of house elf. She is considered a pureblood house elf, one that hasn't been diluted by centuries of slavery. Her race originates from a reclusive and forbidden magical region of the world. Very few of her kind have ever appeared publicly."
Miranda went on, "She voluntarily chose to serve the Cross lineage at the beginning of the magical world, when the first member of the Cross family helped establish the laws governing magic."
She finished and looked at Raven. "Her special perk is being able to help you like a maid would. She'll take care of your luggage, your food, shopping for you—things like that."
Miranda paused, then added, "Oh. Actually… I don't think I mentioned the currency system of this world, have I?"
She continued, "You're probably familiar with British pounds, but you're likely not familiar with the currency system of the wizarding world."
Raven replied casually, "I saw a bunch of gold coins in another vault, so I absorbed about three thousand of them."
Miranda laughed lightly. "Well, I mean, you do have three thousand gold coins—but they're not just called that."
She explained plainly. "Gold coins are called Galleons. Silver coins are called Sickles. Bronze coins are called Knuts. The system is controlled entirely by goblin‑forged currency produced by Gringotts Bank."
Raven processed this and said, "So they have their own currency system completely controlled by goblin gold, forged by the goblins that run Gringotts Bank."
Miranda nodded. "Yep."
She added, "And as soon as you use up those three thousand Galleons, we'll get you some more."
Raven said, "Excellent. I can't be robbing a bank if the Cross lineage owns the bank to begin with."
Miranda replied, "Exactly. Now you're thinking like a member of the Cross family. You're not taking it—you're borrowing it."
She elaborated, "One thing Gringotts Bank is not lacking is money. Or magical items. Or ingredients. Or… really anything you need."
With a dismissive wave, she added, "Just send Bubbles with instructions, and the goblins will retrieve whatever you need from whichever vault is appropriate. They have ample surplus stored away to replace whatever is taken."
Miranda concluded dryly, "If there's one thing Gringotts isn't short of, it's wizards constantly dying and leaving everything in their vaults, never to be touched again. We specialize in storing old people's and dead people's crap."
Raven laughed quietly. "I know a bit about that myself. I was something of a hoarder in my old world."
She clarified, "I hoarded knowledge. And books. Especially books."
Miranda raised an eyebrow. "Oh? You love collecting books, then?"
Raven's shadow expanded behind her. As it rose, it formed a doorway. Miranda peered inside, let out a low whistle, and said, "You do have quite a book collection, don't you? There must be at least ten to twenty thousand books in here."
Raven said, "I've managed to acquire quite a library of magical content from my world."
She continued, "But most of it's useless here until I can fully integrate my power—granted to me by my father—with the magical system of this world."
Raven added, "I'm limited in what I can do right now. But I can definitely use my magic to defeat a few Dementors."
Miranda laughed softly. "That's exactly why your magic works, Raven."
She explained, "The magic of a traveler is unique. Things that can't normally be destroyed by magic in this world can be dealt with using the combination of your magic and this world's magic."
Miranda continued, "Dementors are only one of many problems you'll face over the next several years."
She added, "Once you go to Hogwarts, you'll be able to expand your library significantly."
Then she corrected herself. "And did I mention earlier—Bubbles is extremely adept at copying magical manuscripts and books. Anything you find in the Hogwarts library—even the restricted section—she can copy for you. Otherwise, you can simply send her to retrieve it."
Raven raised a hand. "No, no, no. I'll explore the library myself. That's one of my passions."
Miranda nodded. "Alright."
Raven turned to Bubbles. "So, Bubbles—you're able to make meals for me and everything?"
Bubbles answered politely, "Yes, Lady Raven."
Raven shook her head slightly. "You're not a servant. Just call me Raven."
She continued, "I understand house elves have a servant mentality from what Miranda told me, but that's not our relationship. You may be a subordinate, but you don't need to call me 'miss.' I'm not an old lady."
Bubbles nodded. "Very well, Raven."
Raven said casually, "I want you to go to America, go to a McDonald's, and get me a cheeseburger and a large fry."
Bubbles brightened. "Oh, excellent! I haven't traveled across the pond in quite a number of years."
She vanished.
Miranda groaned. "Oh, shit. I didn't get her to get me a shake."
Raven looked at her.
Miranda shrugged. "What? She travels to fast‑food places all the time for me. There are ones that cater to the magical community you know."
Raven replied, "Right."
