Chapter 29 - After Battle Chit Chat

Raven and Bubbles reappeared in the quiet, glowing expanse of Vault Zero. Their forms shimmered into existence near the center platform, and Bubbles immediately stepped forward, her voice called out. "Miranda! It looks like we have a soul injury here, as well as physical trauma!" She waved her arms, motioning towards Raven. "She took a direct energy beam from a Dementor—one loaded with the accumulated souls it has consumed over centuries!"

From one of the side chambers, Miranda approached with her usual calm walk. Her head tilted slightly as she studied Raven. "Ooh," she said, raising one hand toward the center of the floor. A deep rumble filled the space as the ground split open and a massive slab of stone rose from beneath—smooth, wide, and cold. She gestured towards it. "Lay down on the stone slab."

Raven stared at it. "Oh. That looks incredibly uncomfortable."

Bubbles moved quickly, stepping forward with a confident twist of her wrist. "Leave that to me." A sharp snap echoed. In an instant, a soft mattress appeared on top of the slab, complete with a neatly fluffed pillow. Raven turned to her. "Much better." Her eyes moved to Miranda. "And far more considerate than Miranda."

Miranda folded her arms with an unimpressed look. "Please. I can only use so much magic, and most of mine is stone-based."

Bubbles crossed her own tiny arms. "That doesn't mean you can't be more considerate."

"You're wrecking the atmosphere here."

"Perhaps I'd be less critical if I got a pay raise."

"I'm already giving you active duty pay. What more do you want?"

"A pay increase?"

Miranda sighed. "I will see what I can do."

Raven laid back onto the bed, the faint warmth of the slab oddly comforting despite its origin. Miranda stepped closer, her palm raised. Around her hand, several gemstones materialized in a slow spiral—a flawless diamond, a glowing emerald, and a ruby the color of fresh blood. They rotated in the air, humming with power.

Raven glanced up, her voice flat. "What are those on your hand?"

Miranda replied, "As you know, I'm a golem. I can channel advanced mystical healing energy through rare and exotic gemstones. Each gem specializes in a different form of restorative magic." She pointed to the diamond. "The diamond will cleanse the impurities and soul corruption left behind by the Dementor's attack. That energy beam didn't just harm your body—it damaged your soul."

As she spoke, the diamond began to glow, pulsing with white brilliance. Raven gasped as a pale mist began to lift from her chest. It writhed and screamed a, high-pitched and broken scream, as it was pulled free from her body. Her muscles tensed, eyes narrowing. "This is terrifying magic."

Miranda offered a faint smile. "Dear, I never said the magic that created these abominations is pure. As if any magic in this world is truly innocent at all."

The diamond dimmed and vanished. Then the ruby pulsed. A deep red glow surrounded Raven's skin, and another haze of energy peeled off in burning layers, screaming louder than the last. It evaporated as Miranda lowered her hand.

"How are you feeling?" she asked.

Raven exhaled, her shoulders sinking. "A little better."

"Good. You should rest here for a few more minutes. The stone slab itself has restorative properties."

Raven stared at it with a dry tone. "Yay."

Suddenly, Bubbles darted back into view, cradling a box in both arms. "Here! Have a snack!" she said eagerly. "Sugar always helps you feel better." She pulled out donuts and muffins with a proud smile.

Raven sat up slightly, accepting one. "Thanks, Bubbles. Every ten-year-old girl loves sugar. It always makes us feel better and keeps us awake at night longer."

Miranda raised a single stony eyebrow. "She still needs to go to bed soon Bubbles."

Bubbles protested immediately. "What? She has worked hard. She killed a bunch of Dementors. She completed her first mission."

Miranda paused, then nodded. "That… is true." She reached over and picked up a donut.

Raven looked at Miranda her, expression flat. "You're a hypocrite."

"What? I'm a supervisor."

Bubbles snorted. "Yeah, right. You're more like the gatekeeper."

Miranda turned her head. Her tone sharpened. "Oh. Speak of the devil. We have a new resident lingering here now."

In the distance, the lone controlled Dementor materialized again, floating silently in the far corner of Vault Zero. Its presence sent a faint chill through the air. Miranda narrowed her eyes. "Go join the rest of the abominations in the pen."

The Dementor hesitated, then fled into the shadows, its black robes vanishing behind a stone archway.

"At least I don't have to deal with that thing," Bubbles said.

Miranda turned back to Raven. "You actually managed to control a Dementor. That will be useful later. Those things are notoriously hard to destroy. They're like cockroaches. They have a million lives."

Raven gave a short laugh. "I figured some extra help on the battlefield wouldn't hurt. And it worked."

"It appears that Dementor consumed the souls of the others it destroyed. It absorbed their stored victims. Which means it has evolved." Miranda studied her with quiet awe. "Congratulations, Raven. You just upgraded a Dementor."

Raven sighed. "Oh joy." She bit into a muffin, her eyes lighting up. "Ooh. Blueberry mixed with chocolate chip. My favorite."

Bubbles beamed. "I know. I just picked them up from the gas station."

Miranda turned toward her. "Why aren't you baking them yourself?"

Bubbles deadpanned. "Please. I'm a house elf trapped in the body of a six-year-old girl. Do you really think I want to bake?"

Raven nodded. "Fair point. You're too cute to bake. Just keep buying food. We are lacking everything except money."

"Excellent," Bubbles replied. "I'll help myself to a pay raise."

"Don't push it," Miranda warned.

Then she turned back to Raven. "You didn't feel any lingering corruption from using the unforgivable curses?"

Raven shook her head slowly. "No. No soul decay. No mental erosion."

Miranda exhaled in relief. "Excellent. That means your traveler nature is shielding you from the corruption native wizards suffer."

Bubbles looked at her in wonder. "You get all the benefits. With none of the side effects."

Raven raised an eyebrow. "Try getting hit by a soul beam from a Dementor. Then we can talk."

Bubbles visibly shivered. "No thank you."
