Amara stood by the large window for a moment after Sophia walked away, watching the reflection of the room in the glass. The mansion lights shimmered across the polished floor behind her while quiet conversations continued among the guests. On the outside she remained calm, but inside her thoughts were racing. Sophia's warning kept repeating in her mind. Adrian's father would investigate her. Of course he would. A man that powerful wouldn't simply accept a stranger appearing as his son's girlfriend without checking the truth. Amara took a slow breath and straightened her shoulders before turning back toward the room. The last thing she wanted was for anyone to see her looking nervous. As she walked back toward the others, Adrian immediately noticed her. He stepped away from the small group he had been speaking with and met her halfway across the room. "What did she say?" he asked quietly. Amara glanced toward Sophia, who was now speaking politely with one of the guests as if nothing had happened. "She warned me," Amara replied. Adrian's eyes narrowed slightly. "About what?" "About your father investigating me." Adrian didn't look surprised. "He will." Amara folded her arms slightly. "You say that like it's normal." "For him it is." Amara sighed softly. "Then our fake relationship won't last very long." Adrian studied her expression carefully. "Does that worry you?" Amara gave a small shrug. "It should probably worry you more than me." Adrian didn't respond immediately. Instead he gently took her hand again, as if reminding everyone watching that they were together. "We'll deal with it when the time comes," he said calmly. Amara looked at him. "You sound very confident." "I usually am." Before she could answer, Adrian's father approached them. The older man held a glass of wine in one hand while studying them with quiet curiosity. "Adrian," he said calmly. "Father." His father's attention shifted toward Amara again. "I must admit," he said slowly, "you surprised me tonight." Amara tilted her head slightly. "In a good way, I hope." The older man allowed a faint smile to appear. "That remains to be seen." Adrian spoke before the conversation could become uncomfortable. "Is something wrong?" His father shook his head. "Not at all. In fact, I was just telling our guests that I may have underestimated you." Adrian raised an eyebrow. "You usually do." His father ignored the comment and looked back at Amara. "Tell me something," he said calmly. "Yes, sir?" "What are your plans for the future?" Amara hesitated for only a moment. "I want stability," she answered honestly. "For myself and for my family." His sharp eyes watched her carefully. "And you believe my son can give you that?" Adrian looked slightly annoyed by the question, but Amara answered before he could speak. "I believe people should build their own stability." The older man seemed mildly impressed by the answer. "A practical perspective." Before the conversation could continue further, Sophia suddenly appeared again. "Uncle," she said sweetly, addressing Adrian's father. "Some of the guests are asking for you." He nodded once. "Excuse me." As he walked away, Sophia remained standing beside them. She looked at Adrian calmly. "You've certainly made tonight interesting." Adrian's expression hardened slightly. "That wasn't the goal." Sophia smiled faintly. "Maybe not. But you succeeded anyway." She turned her attention toward Amara again. "Enjoy the evening while you can." Adrian stepped slightly closer to Amara, clearly irritated now. "Sophia." She raised her hands in surrender. "Relax. I'm done for tonight." With that she walked away again. Amara exhaled quietly. "She really doesn't like me." Adrian looked toward Sophia across the room. "She doesn't like losing." Amara frowned slightly. "Losing what?" Adrian's answer came calmly. "Control." The evening continued for another hour with light conversation and drinks. Eventually the guests began leaving one by one until only the family members remained. Adrian guided Amara back toward the entrance where the car was already waiting outside. As they stepped out into the cool night air, Amara finally relaxed slightly. The tension inside the mansion had been exhausting. Adrian opened the car door for her and she stepped inside. Once the car began driving away from the mansion gates, Amara leaned back in her seat and closed her eyes for a moment. "Well," she said quietly, "that was terrifying." Adrian gave a faint smile. "You survived." Amara opened her eyes and looked at him. "Barely." Adrian studied her for a moment before speaking again. "You impressed my father." Amara looked surprised. "Really?" "Yes." She leaned back again. "That's good… right?" Adrian's expression grew thoughtful. "It depends." Amara frowned. "On what?" Adrian looked out the window at the passing lights of the city before answering. "On whether he believes this relationship is real." Amara sighed softly. "And if he doesn't?" Adrian turned his gaze back toward her. "Then he'll try to end it." Amara raised an eyebrow. "How?" Adrian's voice remained calm, but his next words made the situation suddenly feel much more serious. "By removing you from my life."
