Chapter 2 - Chapter 2 — Awakening of Power

Ethan's legs trembled as he stood, the blue glow of the Skill Devour System still radiating faintly from his palm. Every breath burned in his lungs, but the pain that had threatened to crush him moments ago was now replaced with a strange, invigorating warmth. HP: 15/100, Stamina: 20/100, blinked softly in his HUD, almost taunting him with how fragile his life still was. "I… I can do this… maybe… just maybe I can survive," he thought, staring at the towering Iron Troll before him. The monster's glowing red eyes tracked every small movement, its massive form filling the corridor with an oppressive weight. Fear clawed at him, but the system's presence whispered a calm certainty he couldn't yet name. (Ding) [Chances of Survival: 12%] The number was laughably low, but for the first time, it wasn't zero. His body thrummed with newfound power, yet deep inside, a faint pulse from the system whispered a secret he couldn't yet comprehend. Something dangerous, forbidden… alive.

The Iron Troll lunged, its movements heavy yet deliberate. Ethan rolled instinctively, feeling his body respond faster than he had ever imagined. (Ding) [New Skill Detected: Iron Skin]

(Ding) [Activate? YES / NO]

"I… I have no choice…", he muttered, and the energy pulsed through him again. His skin rippled with a faint metallic sheen as he blocked the creature's swing, sparks scattering across the jagged stones. Pain still lanced through him, but it was manageable now, a reminder that his life was still very much on the line. HP: 22/100, Skill Cooldown: 60s, flashed in his HUD, each number a fragile measure of survival. Every move he made, every evasion, every calculated step, brought a rush of adrenaline and panic. "I'm doing it… I'm really doing it… this… this isn't me yet… I can feel it… I can feel the power," Ethan thought, awestruck and terrified. The monster's roar shook the cavern, dust falling like rain, and a tiny spark of defiance ignited in his chest. He was no longer just the weakest F-rank hunter; he was something different now. Something dangerous.

As the battle raged, the dungeon walls around them seemed to pulse, almost aware of the energy in the room. Ethan's HUD flickered again. (Ding) [Hidden Skill Potential Detected]

"What… hidden skill?" he thought, brows furrowed, heart hammering. The glow on his hand flared, and a faint blue thread of energy shot into the air. He realized then that every devoured skill carried more than just ability; it carried a trace of the monster itself, an essence he could feel tugging at his mind. "Is… it trying to… talk to me? Or control me?" Fear mixed with fascination as the Iron Troll prepared another devastating strike. Ethan barely leapt aside, landing on jagged stones that bit into his palms. HP: 18/100, Stamina: 15/100, blinked urgently. He had to act fast. He clenched his fists and whispered, "I won't let you kill me… not yet… not ever." The system chimed again, almost teasing him. (Ding) [Warning: Unknown Effect Detected] The words were small, barely perceptible, yet they sent a shiver down his spine. Something about this power was… wrong. Forbidden. Dangerous. And yet, it was the only thing keeping him alive.

With a deep, shuddering breath, Ethan focused, feeling the system respond to his desperation. (Ding) [Skill Devour: Iron Skin Level 1 Acquired] His body shimmered with metallic energy, muscles flexing, senses sharpened. The Iron Troll's swing was deflected, and for a brief moment, the creature paused, as if surprised. "I… I can fight it… I can really fight it…" His mind raced with strategy and fear. Every heartbeat was measured, every motion calculated. Sparks flew as stone cracked beneath them, and Ethan felt a surge of exhilaration mixed with the raw, terrifying edge of survival. Deep in the system's coded depths, a quiet pulse throbbed, a warning hidden beneath layers of mechanical logic: This is only the beginning. For now, he had survived, but the dungeon, the monsters, and the secret of the system had only just begun to reveal themselves. Ethan's journey had begun in earnest, and the faint whisper of the system's true nature promised trials far beyond anything he had ever imagined.
