Chapter 92 - Chapter 92: The Lone Wolf

Tyrosh, The Purple Palace

As the first jaundiced light of dawn touched the horizon, the "Chainbreaker" army resembled a dark, irresistible tide coiled around the massive iron gates of the Purple Palace.

Jon had led his men through a grueling series of street battles, but the sheer volume of the enemy remained problematic. To his surprise, the Tyroshi commander had cold-bloodedly abandoned the mercenary companies in the lower city, sacrificing them to buy time for the elites to retreat into the inner sanctum. While the Allied forces now controlled every cobblestone of the outer city, they all knew that Tyrosh had not truly fallen until the Purple Palace was taken.

Throughout the night, Jon had kept the pressure on. He ordered the mercenaries to maintain a constant, cacophonous clamor—beating drums, blowing horns, and launching mock charges. It was a psychological meat-grinder designed to shred the nerves of the defenders.

Standing at the vanguard of the Chainbreakers, Jon felt a grim sense of pride. These men had followed him from the dirt of the Stepstones to the heart of one of the world's great powers. They stood in the morning light with an aura of lethal calm, their armor reflecting the sun like cold stars. They were no longer a rabble of freedmen; they were a legion led by a True Dragon, and they were ready to trample the last bastion of the slave-masters into the dust.

"Narsas! Report," Jon commanded, his blood-red cloak snapping in the wind. "The envoy has been inside for hours. What is the word?"

"My Lord..." Narsas started, but the answer arrived before he could finish.

Thud. Splat.

From a murder-hole high in the overhanging bastion of the palace, a bundle of wet, red meat was cast out. It hit the pavement with a sickening squelch. It was the remains of Jon's messenger, unrecognizable save for the tattered remains of the Rainbow Flag he had carried as a symbol of peace.

"Listen well, outlanders!" a Tyroshi herald roared from behind the battlements. "The blood of Tyrosh is noble, and nobility does not bow! We will never surrender!"

The response from the Allied camp was a roar of fury.

"Aegon, give the word!" "Let the Wolf Pack tear them down!" "We have the siege towers! Let us burn them out!"

Jon watched the mutilated remains of his envoy, a cold, sharp killing intent frosting over his gaze. The Tyroshis were baiting him, hoping he would hurl his infantry into the vertical kill-zones of the outer fort. They were confident in their stone and their Fire Oil.

"I will not fill those trenches with the bodies of my men," Jon said, his voice a low, vibrating growl. Behind him, the shadow of a dragon seemed to flicker in the morning mist, a phantom weight of ancient power. "If they want a war of monsters, I will give them one."

Night fell again, heavy and thick. Per Jon's orders, the army continued its loud, boisterous feints, but the core of the Chainbreakers stood down to rest. Jon himself retired to his command tent, though not to sleep.

High in a watch-post of the Purple Palace's outer bastion, a handful of Tyroshi guards leaned against the stone, their faces etched with deep exhaustion. A day and a night of constant alarms had pushed them to the brink. They stared out at the looming silhouettes of Jon's siege towers, which sat like silent giants in the gloom.

"Do they never sleep?" one sentry muttered, huddling into his cloak.

"Doesn't matter," his companion grunted, eyes bleary. "Commander Saeraes says the relief fleet is coming. We just have to hold. No one takes the Purple Palace."

Sizzzzzzze.

"Did you hear that?" the first guard asked, bolting upright.

"Hear what? I only hear those damned drums in the dista—"

The guard's words were cut short. He leaned his head out of the basketball-sized arrow-slit to peer down the wall. He didn't even have time to scream.

A massive, grotesque mandible lunged from the darkness, snapping shut around his head with the sound of a dry branch breaking. A spray of acrid, steaming green fluid hissed against the stone as the sentry's headless body slumped back into the room.

"FE—! ENEMY ATTACK!" the other guard shrieked, but the darkness was already flooding through the slit.

Using the acid-coated fangs of summoned Giant Poison Spiders, Jon had targeted a structural weak point near the bastion's base. The spiders' venom ate through the Tyroshi mortar like hot water through snow. In the confusion, Jon stepped through a newly melted gap in the masonry, his black armor slick with the night's mist.

Inside the attack-barracks, which housed nearly a hundred men, panic exploded. The guards scrambled for their spears, their minds reeling from the sight of the chittering horrors emerging from the walls.

"Kill them! Kill the monsters!" "Look! There's a man with them!" "It's the White Wolf! He's in the walls!"

Jon didn't give them time to organize. He leveled the scepter-form of Dark Sister, his eyes reflecting the blue glow of gathering mana.

Fwoom!

A fireball erupted from the tip of the scepter, slamming into the head of a charging sergeant. The impact was violent; the man's helmet shattered as his head burst like a ripened melon under the thermal pressure.

Jon moved with surgical precision, weaving through the cramped corridor. He unleashed a barrage of fire, turning the narrow barracks into a furnace. Screams of agony joined the frantic chittering of the spiders.

"HELP US!" "A SORCERER! A DEMON!"

The Tyroshi regulars, who had prided themselves on their discipline, shattered. Under the dual assault of the fire and the skittering, eight-legged nightmares, they threw down their weapons and fled deeper into the palace, their frantic cries carrying the news of the breach to every floor. Jon followed in the wake of the terror, a lone shadow in a burning fortress.
