Chapter 1 - ch 1

**All characters are 18+ - Final year seniors**

### THE THEATER - AFTER

The theater has no walls. It has rows that go back too far and seats that remember everyone who ever sat in them. The air smells like old books and New Orleans rain and the kitchen at the Salvatore School at 2 a.m.

They are all there. Old. After. The kind of old you get to be when you survived everything that was supposed to kill you.

Klaus with Hayley tucked into his side, his hand locked over hers. Rebekah between Elijah and Kol, already crying. Freya holding Keelin's hand so tight her knuckles are white. Marcel, Vincent, Cami — Cami, breathing, here — Alaric with silver at his temples, Caroline with her hands in his. Damon and Elena, Stefan with Lexi's laugh still in his eyes, Bonnie, Matt, Jeremy, Josie and Lizzie grown women holding each other, Landon, Rafael, MG, Kaleb, Jed, Cleo. The whole impossible family.

At the front, the Author. A shape made of turning pages.

"You kept asking where she went," it says. "When Malivore spat her out and didn't give her back."

The screen shivers. Black pit. Mud. Light.

"Her name is Hope Mikaelson. Watch. Episode One."

### EPISODE 1: WOLF MOON

#### BEACON HILLS PRESERVE - NIGHT

The girl running tonight is not Hope.

She is Laura Hale. She runs like she was taught not to make noise. Her breath comes white. Her ankle turns. She falls. Something with red eyes stands over her that used to be family. She doesn't get to scream.

Twenty-three minutes later, blue and red lights cut the fog.

Sheriff Noah Stilinski kneels in leaf-rot that soaks through his uniform. He's found hikers, drunks, kids. He has never found half a girl. The lower half. Sneakers still tied.

"Jesus," his deputy whispers. "Where's the rest?"

Noah pulls the sheet over and thinks of his son. Thinks of his son at eight, feverish, asking if monsters were real.

Half a mile deeper, the forest tears.

It isn't a sound. It's pressure, like the world gagging. The air peels open, black and viscous, and it spits.

Hope hits the ground from ten feet up.

She lands on hands and knees and the impact cracks through her wrists. Black sludge pours out of her mouth, her nose. Malivore. Months of being digested. She heaves until there's nothing left, until her tribrid blood finally burns the rest out.

She's in mud to her elbows. Same torn sweater she wore the day she walked in. Hair matted. Hands shaking so bad she can't get them under her.

She pushes up. "No— no—"

The pit is gone. The school is gone. The sky isn't Virginia. Pine sap, wet earth, old blood on the wind.

Sirens, distant, where the deputies are.

She starts walking toward them because sirens mean people.

#### SCOTT MCCALL'S BEDROOM - 12:07 AM

Scott McCall wakes up to tapping on glass.

He's eighteen, lanky, heart-first, inhaler on his nightstand. His best friend lives in his window.

"SCOTT! SCOTT!"

Stiles Stilinski is hanging out of his Jeep, one massive arm holding the door frame, phone flashlight in Scott's face. He's eighteen too. He's always been eighteen and built like a wall. Six-three, shoulders that fill a doorway, chest and arms so dense with muscle his t-shirts strain at the seams, forearms corded, hands big enough to palm a basketball like an apple. He was born like that. Even as a kid he looked carved. Even as a freshman he could have cleared a hallway without trying. Teachers used to stare and then look away. People in town just got used to it — that's Stilinski's kid, yeah, he's huge, yeah, he's still the nervous kid who talks too fast.

But he talks too fast.

"My dad found a body! Half a body! In the Preserve! If we find the other half before the cops move it, Coach has to put us on first line!"

Scott shoves the window up. "Are you insane?"

"Yes! Come on!"

Scott pulls on his hoodie and climbs out, because Stiles says *we* and Scott has never said no to that.

The Jeep smells like fries and anxiety and Stiles. Stiles drives like the road is a suggestion. His knees hit the underside of the wheel.

They don't see the girl stumbling between trees, barefoot, footprints healing as soon as she lifts them.

#### THE PRESERVE - 12:31 AM

Fog low enough to drown in.

"This is where—" Stiles whispers, flashlight shaking in a hand that could crush the flashlight without trying.

Scott's chest seizes. Wheeze. "Stiles—"

Light floods them.

"MIECZYSŁAW STILINSKI!"

Sheriff Stilinski stands there, thunderous. He grabs Stiles — and even for Noah, who is a big man, grabbing his son's arm is like grabbing a pillar. "You are out of your mind! This is an active homicide scene!"

"Dad—"

"Jeep. Now. Home. You do not move until school or I will handcuff you to your bed."

Stiles is dragged away, throwing a look at Scott. "Stay! I'll come back!"

Then it's just Scott. Alone. Breathing too loud.

He hears the twig snap.

He turns, and there she is.

Hope at the edge of his light, barefoot, mud to her knees, sweater torn. Eyes catching light amber-blue.

"Are you—" Scott starts. "Are you hurt?"

"Where am I?" Her voice is shredded.

"Beacon Hills Preserve—"

The growl comes from everywhere.

Scott spins. Red eyes, low, huge.

It hits him like a truck. One second standing, next on his back, teeth sinking into his side, just above his hip. White-hot. He screams.

Hope doesn't think. Heat rips up her arms, that old tribrid fire Malivore smothered. "GET OFF HIM!"

She slams her hand and a pulse hits it. The Alpha — Peter Hale, burned, feral — snarls and jerks back, eyes fixed on her. Vampire. Wolf. Witch. Impossible.

Footsteps crash through brush.

"SCOTT!"

Stiles crashes back through, because of course he did. He left his dad at the lot and ran. When he runs, the ground actually thuds. He stops dead. Sees Scott bleeding. Sees Hope lit up. Sees the thing.

Peter moves. No plan. Just rage. He hits Stiles next, claws raking across a shoulder that is all dense muscle, teeth finding meat that should have been harder to bite than it was.

Stiles goes down hard next to Scott with a grunt that is more shock than pain. A normal kid would have been gutted. Stiles bleeds, but not much. Even human, his body was absurd — the kind of body that could have put twenty men on the ground without breaking a sweat and still apologized after. The Sheriff had seen it once at a town fair when Stiles was sixteen and three drunk guys grabbed his arm. Stiles put them down in six seconds and then panicked about whether he'd hurt them.

Peter is gone. One blink.

Silence, except two boys breathing.

Hope drops between them, hands hovering, shaking. She could heal them with her blood. She hesitates.

The bite takes.

Scott's wound pulls shut, pink, knitting too fast.

Stiles's wound seals silver. Then his whole body seizes. Muscle that was already massive goes tight, cords standing out in his neck, his arms, his chest. His back arches off the leaves.

"Stiles! Look at me—"

His eyes fly open.

Red. Solid, molten, sunrise-through-blood Alpha red, light spilling out.

The Preserve goes quiet, like something just took a throne.

Stiles gasps, claws punching out of fingertips that were already big enough to wrap a throat, then back in. "What— what—"

Scott sits up, hand over his side where there's no hole anymore, staring at his best friend lit up like a god. "Stiles, your eyes—"

#### SHERIFF'S STATION - 1:44 AM

Burnt coffee and old files.

Hope in a shock blanket that doesn't help. Bare feet. Mud.

"Hope Mikaelson," she says flat. "I was somewhere else."

Sheriff Stilinski watches her from his office. No ID. No phone. Emergency contact Alaric Saltzman, Mystic Falls, Virginia — disconnected.

He calls Melissa McCall.

"Mel, it's Noah. Got a girl here. No placement tonight. Can she crash with you and Scott?"

Melissa shows up in scrubs, takes one look at Hope and puts too-big sneakers on her feet. "Come on, sweetheart. Let's get you warm."

#### MCCALL HOUSE - 2:13 AM

Scott on his bathroom tile, shirt off, staring at his side. The bite is a pink crescent, already fading. He can hear everything. The drip in the kitchen. His mom's heartbeat downstairs. The girl in the guest room trying not to cry.

Down the hall, Hope under water so hot it turns her skin red, watching black swirl down the drain, whispering, "Dad? Mom?" to steam.

A soft knock. Melissa. "Clothes on the bed, honey. You're safe here."

#### STILINSKI HOUSE - 2:13 AM

Stiles locks his bathroom door and tears his shirt off.

The bite is gone. Thin silver line over a shoulder that looks like it was cut from stone. Delts, traps, chest — even at rest his torso is a wall of muscle, abs deep, lats spreading wide enough to shadow the sink. He was born like that. People stopped asking by middle school.

His heart hammers — deeper, slower, powerful.

He looks up at the mirror.

Red eyes flash.

He slams back into the wall, drywall cracking faintly behind him because he doesn't know his own strength when he's scared. "No. Nope—"

Brown again.

He looks at his hands. He can see the cracks in grout. He can smell his dad's coffee downstairs and gun oil in the closet and Scott two miles away.

And then he hears him, inside.

*Stiles? Dude, something's wrong with me.*

Stiles whips around. Empty room. "Scott?"

Fainter: *I think I'm going crazy.*

He sinks to the floor, head in hands, and laughs, terrified and exhilarated.

#### BEACON HILLS HIGH - 8:02 AM

First day of senior year smells like wax and fear.

Scott walks in late and fluorescents buzz like wasps inside his skull. Heartbeats everywhere. Old blood under bleachers.

Hope walks next to him in Melissa's jeans and Scott's old lacrosse tee that slips off one shoulder. Hair damp. Scanning like a battlefield.

"You okay?" Scott asks.

"You were bleeding out last night," she says quietly. "Now you're not limping."

"Don't tell my mom."

The front doors slam and a Jeep screeches.

Stiles vaults out. Sunglasses on indoors because his eyes keep flashing. Six-three, 240 of dense, natural muscle, t-shirt stretched across his chest, arms so big the sleeves ride up, forearms veined, neck thick. He moves with nervous energy that doesn't match the body — still fidgety, still talking with his hands that could bend a pipe.

He sees Scott. Sees Hope. His whole face softens.

"You— you're here. You were— are you okay?"

He takes sunglasses off just for her. Just for a second.

Red flash.

Hope's breath catches. She was raised by Mikaelsons. She's never seen a bite give Alpha. True Alphas earn it through character.

"Stiles," she says.

"Yeah. That's me. That's— yeah. People call me that. You can call me whatever—"

Scott elbows him. Even Scott's elbow hits muscle like a brick wall. "Dude. Breathe."

Scott grabs him. "Bathroom. Now."

Hope follows.

#### BOYS BATHROOM

Empty. Bleach. Stiles locks the door.

"Look," he hisses, and lets go.

Red floods his irises. Claws out. Canines long. The air gets hot around him, like standing too close to a furnace. The sheer mass of him in that small bathroom is overwhelming — shoulders nearly touching both stall walls, chest rising like a bellows.

Scott stumbles back. "Oh my god— your eyes—"

"Yours too! Look!"

Scott looks. Gold flash.

"We're werewolves," Scott whispers.

"Werewolves," Hope says from the door. "Both of you."

"You knew?" Stiles spins, red still burning. "In the woods you glowed—"

"I didn't know what bit you. But I know what you are. And Stiles—" She steps closer. She has to tilt her head up even though she's tall. She touches the silver scar on his shoulder. Her fingertips tingle. Power recognizing power. The muscle under her hand jumps. "Red means Alpha. You shouldn't be an Alpha on day one. You were just... chosen."

Stiles stares down at her hand on him, his ridiculous heart thudding so loud she hears it. "Is that bad?"

"It's rare," she whispers, eyes on his. "It means you're strong. It means the wolf looked at who you are and decided you were already a leader."

Something tight in Stiles's chest since his mom died, since everyone saw the body and not the boy inside it, loosens.

Bell rings.

#### CHEMISTRY - MR. HARRIS

Harris loves suffering.

Scott slides into a seat and smells vanilla and bow wax.

Allison Argent walks in. Eighteen, dark ponytail, archery calluses, new girl. Smile that short-circuits Scott's newly rewired brain. Daughter of hunters.

"Is this seat taken?" she asks Scott.

Scott forgets English. "No— I'm— Scott—"

Hope, two rows back, likes her instantly. Smells hunter discipline.

Stiles next to Hope, leaning, his huge frame making the lab table look small, whispers, breath warm on her ear. "That's Allison. New. Scott's been in love for four seconds. New record."

Hope snorts. Real laugh, startled out. "Slow."

Stiles lights up like she gave him the moon. "You have a laugh. You should keep that."

Harris slams a book. "Mr. Stilinski. Miss Mikaelson. If you're done flirting, what is wolfsbane?"

Hope goes still. She knows wolfsbane.

Stiles, red hidden by will, says, "Plant that can kill werewolves."

"Correct. Surprising."

Under the table, Hope's hand finds Stiles's. Squeezes. *You're okay.* His palm is furnace-hot and engulfs hers completely. He squeezes back gently, terrified of breaking her.

#### LACROSSE FIELD - TRYOUTS

Coach Finstock whistle. "McCall! Stilinski! Let's see if you can catch without tripping!"

Jackson Whittemore — perfect, cruel, captain — and Lydia Martin — strawberry-blonde, brilliant, bored — watching.

Scott steps on field and world narrows. He hears ball before it's thrown. Fast. Too fast. Scores.

Stiles is next. He has been bad at lacrosse for three years because he was too nervous, too in his head, despite a body that should have dominated any sport. Coaches used to beg him to try football. He refused.

Now stick feels like part of his arm. He runs and ground thuds under him. He hits Jackson and Jackson — Jackson Whittemore, who has never been hit — goes flying ten feet and lands on his ass.

Ball flies. Goal.

Silence.

"STILINSKI! WHERE THE HELL HAS THAT BEEN? FIRST LINE! BOTH OF YOU!"

Scott and Stiles look at each other, gold and red flickering, grinning like idiots.

On bleachers, Hope with knees to chest, Melissa's sneakers dangling, chest cracking open with pride. She catches Stiles's eye across field. Sweaty, huge, disheveled, eyes flashing red just for her. She smiles and he almost drops his stick.

Lydia leans over. "You're the new girl. Hope. You know them?"

"Something like that."

"Mm. The big one is cute when he's not about to have a panic attack," Lydia says, nodding at Stiles. "You could do worse."

Hope laughs louder.

#### PARKING LOT - AFTER SCHOOL

Sun bleeding out. Allison texted Scott.

Black Camaro rolls in slow. Derek Hale steps out. Eighteen going on forty, leather jacket, eyes that watched family burn. Looks at Scott. Then at Stiles. Stops breathing.

"You. You were bitten last night."

Scott freezes.

Derek grabs his arm, sleeve up, bite almost gone. "Who bit you?"

Derek's nose flares. Looks at Stiles. Alpha. On a kid turned last night. Impossible. And the size — even before the bite, the kid is built like a grown werewolf already.

"You too."

Stiles steps in front of Scott without thinking. Shoulders back. The parking lot suddenly feels smaller. Heat rolling off him. Red eyes bleeding through, furious. "Back off him."

Derek actually takes a step back. Shock breaks his mask. "Red— you're an Alpha? You were just turned. How—"

Hope steps between them, small, immovable. Derek wrinkles nose because she smells like death and wolf and vampire and something with no name.

"He said back off," Hope says quietly, eyes flicking gold.

Derek looks at the three — beta too strong, Alpha who shouldn't exist with a body that shouldn't be human, and a girl who smells like end of everything — and laughs humorless.

"You have no idea what you just walked into."

He peels out.

#### THE PRESERVE - NIGHT - RETURN

Plan stupid. All Stiles's plans stupid.

"I left my inhaler," Scott lies.

"You left your brain," Stiles mutters, but hand finds Hope's in dark and holds on like anchor. Palm steams in cold. "Stay close."

Hope nods, magic sputtering low but there.

Derek finds them. Drops from trees, slams Scott into trunk. "You shouldn't have come back! The Alpha is still here! He will kill you!"

Scott gasps.

Stiles roars. Actually roars. Red light spills, canines long, claws out, and he hits Derek like a freight train. Two werewolves collide and forest shakes. Derek is older, trained, but Stiles is an Alpha. True Alpha. Born not made. And even human, Stiles could ragdoll men twice his age. Now? Derek flies ten feet, hits a tree hard enough to crack bark.

Derek lands, staring up, awed and afraid. "You pushed me—"

Stiles stands over Scott, chest heaving, shirt stretched tight over muscle that seems to grow with every breath, red eyes blazing, looking down at claws like they belong to someone else. "What am I?"

Hope kneels next to Scott, then looks up at Stiles, soft and steady. "You're you. Just more."

Above, unseen, Peter Hale watches with bleeding eyes and smiles. Two wolves. One an Alpha on day one with strength that was already inhuman. And a girl who smells like apocalypse. Perfect.

A howl carries. Not theirs.

#### ARGENT HOUSE

Allison comes home to Kate cleaning rifle and Chris watching woods.

"Animal attack in Preserve," Chris says. "Stay out of woods."

Allison nods, thinking about boy with kind eyes who smelled like grass and heartbreak.

#### MCCALL HOUSE - LATE NIGHT

Scott and Stiles and Hope on Scott's bedroom floor, backs against bed, sharing cold pizza. Scott's bite gone. Stiles's scar silver over muscle that still looks carved even in bad light.

"So," Scott says small. "We're werewolves."

"You're a werewolf," Stiles says, staring at hands where claws slide in and out. His forearms flex, veins thick. "I'm apparently boss werewolf. Which is insane. That's insane, right?"

"Alpha," Hope says.

Stiles looks at her, red flickering behind brown, fear melting because she isn't scared. "Is that why I can hear Scott in my head?"

"Pack," Hope says, word feeling like home, like Mikaelson. "Wolves have packs. Alphas have packs."

Scott looks between them. "Are we— a pack?"

"Yeah," Stiles says immediately, looking at Hope when he says it. "Yeah, we are."

Hope leans head against Stiles's shoulder. He is hot, like living fireplace, smells like woods and boy and power, and shoulder is broad enough to be a pillow, muscle solid under her cheek, and for first time since black nothing, she doesn't feel alone.

"We need rules," she whispers.

"Rule one," Stiles says, grinning despite everything. "Hope Mikaelson doesn't get to die in Beacon Hills. Ever."

She looks up, surprised, earnest hurts. She smiles, small and real and wet. "Deal."

Outside, moon full and huge and indifferent, and somewhere in Preserve Alpha licks wounds and plans.

Inside, three teenagers — two newly bitten werewolves, one tribrid girl far from home — fall asleep on floor in pile, breathing in sync, pack before they know word for it.

#### THEATER

Screen goes dark.

Silent except Rebekah sobbing into Elijah's shoulder. Klaus face in hands, shoulders shaking, because his little girl looked so lost in those woods and so found on that bedroom floor. Hayley whispering, "That's my baby. Look at her laugh."

Elena crying into Damon. "She found them."

"An Alpha on day one," Elijah murmurs, awed. "And look at him. The boy was already a fortress. Character is destiny."

"He's got red eyes," Kol grins through tears. "Our Hope likes the dangerous ones."

"Shut up, Kol," Rebekah sobs, hitting him.

Alaric wipes eyes. "Is she going to be okay?"

Author's pages turn soft.

"That was the night she arrived. The night the bite chose two boys instead of one. The night an Alpha was born without having to kill."

"The night she started," Hayley whispers.

"Watch," Author says. "Episode Two is coming."
