Chapter 28 - Chapter 27 - The Final Day

Age 24 — Neutral Zone — Gu Clan Compound — Morning

The last day of the gathering dawned gray and heavy.

Gu Chen stood at the window, watching the city wake. Messengers ran between compounds. Delegations hurried through the streets. The game was ending — or beginning.

The King: Today decides.

The Soldier: Today we watch.

The Beggar: Today we survive.

The Monk: Today we choose.

Gu Chen touched the pendant.

Then the jade token beside it.

Two promises. Two debts. Two paths.

---

Mid-morning

Gu Tianxiong summoned him.

The clan leader's quarters were larger than Gu Chen's, darker, heavier with the weight of centuries. Gu Tianxiong sat behind a desk of black stone, expression unreadable.

"You met with Mo Yu. Twice."

The Soldier: He knows.

The King: Of course he knows.

The Beggar: He always knows.

Gu Chen said nothing.

Gu Tianxiong leaned forward. "What did you discuss?"

The Orphan: Tell him.

The Soldier: Lie.

The King: Truth — but not all.

The Monk: Choose.

Gu Chen met his father's gaze.

"She offered a truce. One year. In exchange for a favor."

Gu Tianxiong's eyes narrowed. "A favor?"

"Yes."

"And you accepted?"

"Yes."

Silence.

Then Gu Tianxiong laughed. It was a cold sound.

"Bold. Stupid. But bold." He leaned back. "The Mo Clan doesn't offer favors without expecting十倍 in return. You know that?"

The Soldier: Yes.

The King: We know.

The Beggar: We know too well.

Gu Chen nodded.

"I know."

Gu Tianxiong studied him for a long moment. Then he waved a hand.

"Go. The gathering ends today. Don't cause more trouble."

Gu Chen bowed.

Turned to leave.

"Boy."

He stopped.

"You're learning."

Gu Chen walked out.

---

Noon — The Great Hall

The Eight Clans gathered one last time.

Speeches were made. Alliances announced. Enemies named. Gu Chen stood with the Gu Clan delegation, watching, listening, storing everything.

The Soldier: So many names.

The King: So many faces.

The Beggar: So many enemies.

The Monk: So many possibilities.

Mo Yu caught his eye across the hall. Nodded once. Then looked away.

Gu Lian noticed. Said nothing.

Gu Mei stood close, tense, watching everyone.

---

Afternoon

A messenger approached.

Not Mo Clan. Not Gu. Different robes — grey, plain, unmarked.

"Gu Chen. The Shi Clan requests a moment of your time."

Gu Lian stepped forward. "He's not available."

The messenger smiled. "The Shi Clan doesn't ask twice."

The Soldier: Dangerous.

The King: Informative.

The Beggar: Another trap.

The Monk: Another choice.

Gu Chen looked at Gu Lian.

"I'll go."

---

A side chamber

Small. Quiet. Lit by a single lamp.

An old man waited. Ancient, really — his face lined with centuries, his eyes the color of faded jade.

"Sit."

Gu Chen sat.

The old man studied him. "I am Shi Yuan. Third elder of the Shi Clan." His voice was soft, almost kind. "I've been watching you."

The Soldier: Everyone watches.

The King: Listen.

The Beggar: He's old. Old means dangerous.

The Monk: Old means wise. Sometimes.

Gu Chen waited.

Shi Yuan smiled. "You don't talk much. Good. Talkers are boring." He leaned forward. "The Shi Clan deals in time. Past, present, future. We see patterns where others see chaos."

The King: Time Clan.

The Soldier: They know things.

The Beggar: They want something.

Shi Yuan reached into his robe. Pulled out a small hourglass — sand that glowed faintly.

"This is a gift. Not a debt. Not a favor. A gift."

He placed it on the table between them.

Gu Chen looked at it.

"Why?"

Shi Yuan smiled. "Because one day, you'll need to know how much time you have left." He stood. "When that day comes, turn the glass. The sand will show you."

He walked away.

Gu Chen stared at the hourglass.

The Orphan: A gift?

The Soldier: Nothing is free.

The King: Not from the Eight Clans.

The Monk: But maybe...

He picked it up. Small. Warm. Felt heavier than it should.

He tucked it into his robe. Beside the pendant. Beside the jade token.

---

Late afternoon

Gu Mei found him in the corridor.

"The Shi Clan? Really?" Her voice was sharp. "First Mo, now Shi. You're collecting clan favors like trinkets."

Gu Chen said nothing.

"Do you have any idea what you're doing?"

The Orphan: No.

The Soldier: Yes.

The King: Maybe.

The Beggar: Does anyone?

Gu Chen met her gaze.

"Building options."

Gu Mei stared at him. Then laughed. It was not a happy sound.

"Options. Right." She shook her head. "You're going to get yourself killed."

"Maybe."

She turned to leave. Stopped.

"Just... don't die before I figure out what you are."

She walked away.

Gu Chen watched her go.

The Monk: She cares.

The Beggar: She's still here.

The Soldier: She's useful.

The King: She's family.

The Orphan: Family leaves.

---

Dusk

The gathering ended.

Delegations departed. Compounds emptied. The Neutral Zone grew quiet, preparing for another century of waiting.

Gu Chen stood at the gate of the Gu Clan compound, watching the last of the other clans leave.

Gu Lian appeared beside him.

"We leave at dawn."

Gu Chen nodded.

"Whatever game you're playing — with Mo, with Shi — be careful." Her voice was low. "My uncle doesn't forgive betrayal."

The Soldier: Noted.

The King: Filed.

The Beggar: Remembered.

Gu Chen looked at her.

"I know."

Gu Lian held his gaze for a moment. Then she walked away.

---

Night

He sat at the window, three objects before him.

The pendant. His mother's.

The jade token. Mo Yu's favor.

The hourglass. Shi Yuan's gift.

The Orphan: Three.

The Soldier: Three paths.

The King: Three choices.

The Beggar: Three traps.

The Monk: Three possibilities.

He touched each one in turn.

Then he closed his eyes.

Tomorrow, they would return to the Blood Domain.

Tomorrow, the game would continue.

But tonight, for the first time, he felt like he was playing too.

---

Outside the city walls

Su Wan stood at the edge of the Neutral Zone.

Her hand pressed against a dying tree.

It cracked.

"Five down," she whispered.

"Four to go."

She looked toward the compound where a single lamp still burned.

"He's collecting things now," she breathed. "Tokens. Favors. Choices."

The wind moved through dead branches.

"That's how it starts."

She did not move for a long time.
