Chapter 10 – The Collapse

Eidolon was dying.

The city's streets burned, twisted metal and shattered glass littered the avenues, and smoke turned the sky into a permanent gray haze. From above, the sound of artillery and gunfire was deafening.

Kael Varden limped through the chaos, his bloodied leg threatening to collapse beneath him with every step. Ahead, Valkyr advanced through the streets like a predator. Red eyes glowing, metal-augmented muscles flexing with lethal precision. The Leviathan's footsteps shook the ground.

Kael tightened his grip on his knife and rifle. There was no hesitation. Every ounce of pain and exhaustion was pushed aside. This battle was personal.

Lyra moved alongside him, scanning the city with a sniper rifle, providing cover where she could. Civilians fled through the streets, desperate to escape both Valkyr and the encroaching Dominion troops.

Valkyr lunged.

Kael rolled aside, barely avoiding the fist that could have crushed a car. Sparks flew as metal scraped metal when Kael's knife deflected a swing.

"You survived the last prototype," Valkyr growled, voice like grinding steel.

"I'm still standing," Kael replied, blood dripping into his eyes.

Valkyr swung again. Kael ducked, slashed, and rolled behind a crumbling wall. Dust filled the air.

"You can't stop Phase Omega," Valkyr said, advancing relentlessly. "Even if you destroy this facility… they'll continue the experiments elsewhere."

Kael gritted his teeth. "I stop it… tonight."

The Leviathan charged again. Kael barely dodged the massive punch, rolled forward, and slashed at Valkyr's exposed side. Sparks flew. Valkyr roared in pain but continued the assault. Every strike threatened to end Kael's life, yet he moved with precision, striking at every vulnerable joint, every exposed wire, every weakness.

Meanwhile, Lyra reached the Phase Omega facility beneath the city.

The massive underground complex had been partially sabotaged in their earlier infiltration, but much of it remained operational. Tanks of liquid, wires leading into containment chambers, and machines capable of transforming humans into Leviathans hummed ominously.

Lyra's hands shook as she set explosives throughout the main control chamber. Her finger hovered over the detonator. Civilians were trapped below in lower tunnels. Some could escape. Some couldn't.

"Kael…" she whispered into her communicator. "I… I don't know how many people will survive this."

Kael's voice crackled back. "Do it, Lyra. Do whatever you have to. Stop Phase Omega."

Tears streamed down her face. She pressed the button.

A low rumble echoed through Eidolon. Tunnels collapsed, gas lines ignited, and parts of the facility exploded. Civilians screamed as rubble fell, but the main control chamber—and the Leviathan experiment—was destroyed.

The ground shook violently. Valkyr lost his footing for the first time, giving Kael the opening he needed.

Kael leapt forward, striking the Leviathan with a combination of knives, explosives, and sheer brute force. Valkyr screamed as the armor cracked and wires sparked. The giant fell to one knee, then collapsed entirely.

Kael stumbled, gasping for air, barely able to stand on his ruined leg. He looked at the streets around him. Many civilians had been lost, despite their efforts. The city had survived… but only barely.

From the shadows of the destroyed city, a black aircraft hovered silently.

Noctis stepped forward, stepping out of the cockpit. His presence felt heavier than the collapsing city around him. His voice was calm, yet it carried the weight of the entire wasteland.

"Impressive," he said, looking down at Kael. "You destroyed Phase Omega… but did you really think that would stop the plan?"

Kael turned slowly, anger and exhaustion etched into his face. "What plan? What the hell is this?"

Noctis's eyes glinted beneath his mask. "You've only seen the surface. Phase Omega… Titan… Valkyr… the Leviathans… they were never the goal."

Kael's heart skipped a beat. "Then what was?"

Noctis spread his arms slightly. "The war you've been fighting… the chaos, the massacres, the betrayals… all orchestrated."

Kael clenched his fists. "Rourke? You?"

Noctis tilted his head. "Yes. And more. The war is not about Leviathans. It's about control. Not armies, not cities… entire populations will be reshaped, aligned under a new order. Only then can humanity survive… or at least, survive the way we define it."

Lyra stumbled beside Kael. "You… you're insane."

"No," Noctis said softly. "I am necessary."

Kael's eyes narrowed. He raised his knife, bloodied but steady. "Then necessary or not… you're going to die here."

Noctis smiled faintly. "We'll see, Kael. The game has only just begun."

Behind them, explosions continued. The Obsidian Veil had begun reorganizing after Eidolon's collapse. Dominion troops were retreating. The city was in ruins. But for the first time, Kael understood the full scale of the war:

This wasn't just a fight for survival.

It was a fight for the future of humanity itself.

And the true battle… had only just begun.
