Chapter 1 - The Girl Who Didn’t Bow

Everyone in the city knew one thing—power belonged to men like him. Men with cold eyes, expensive suits, and blood on their hands. Men who could ruin lives with a single word. And that he is Rio Volk

I never cared about men like that.

That night, the rain fell hard against the streets, and the neon lights blurred in my eyes as I stepped out of the convenience store holding a paper bag and a bad mood. I was tired, irritated, and in no mood for trouble.

Too bad trouble found me first.

A black car stopped right in front of me, smooth and silent like a warning. The door opened, and a man stepped out. Tall. Sharp. Dangerous. He wore black like the darkness belonged to him. His face was calm, but his eyes… his eyes looked like they had never learned mercy.

Everyone around me went quiet.

But I didn't.

"Move," I said, glaring at him. "You're blocking my way."

For one second, the world seemed to stop.

The men behind him looked shocked. One even took a step forward like I had just signed my own death sentence. But the man in front only stared at me, his expression unreadable.

Then, slowly, he smiled.

And that was the moment I realized I had just spoken rudely to the most feared man in the city.

The air around us suddenly felt heavy.

Someone behind him whispered, "Boss… she doesn't know."

Boss?

My heart skipped a beat.

I slowly looked around. The people on the street were staring at us, but none of them dared to come closer. Some even looked scared.

Then it hit me.

Oh.

Oh no.

This wasn't just some random rich guy I had talked back to.

This was him.

The man people whispered about in dark corners. The man whose name made criminals tremble.

The mafia boss.

My stomach twisted, but I forced myself not to step back. I wasn't the kind of girl who bowed easily.

He took one slow step closer to me.

Up close, he was even more intimidating. Tall, broad shoulders, sharp features, and eyes that looked like they could see straight through a person.

"You're very brave," he said calmly.

His voice was low and smooth, but something about it sent a chill down my spine.

I crossed my arms.

"Or maybe you're just blocking the sidewalk," I replied.

One of the men behind him gasped.

Another muttered, "She's dead."

But the boss didn't look angry.

Instead, that small smile on his lips grew a little wider.

Interesting.

That was the word written all over his face.

And somehow… that scared me more than if he had been furious.

He looked at me like I was something he had just decided to keep.
