Chapter 24 - The Queen's Game

The rumors didn't stop.

If anything, they grew louder.

By Tuesday morning, almost everyone in Riverview Academy had heard some version of the story.

Chelsea and Adrian were secretly dating.

Chelsea was trying to steal Adrian from Vanessa.

Adrian had chosen the "nerd girl" over the richest girl in school.

None of it was confirmed.

But gossip didn't need confirmation.

Chelsea could feel the weight of those whispers everywhere she walked.

In the hallway.

At the lockers.

Even in the library.

Students stared longer than usual. Some whispered behind their hands. A few even smiled at her like they knew a secret she didn't.

Chelsea hated it.

She liked being invisible.

Now she felt like a target.

Meanwhile, Vanessa sat in the cafeteria like a storm waiting to explode.

Her gang surrounded her usual table, but the mood was tense.

One of the girls finally spoke.

"Everyone's talking about them."

Vanessa didn't look up from her phone.

"I know."

Another girl leaned forward.

"Are you just going to let that nerd embarrass you?"

Vanessa slowly placed her phone on the table.

Then she smiled.

But it wasn't a nice smile.

"Oh, I'm not letting anything happen."

Her eyes lifted toward the cafeteria entrance.

Right on cue…

Chelsea walked in.

With Adrian behind her.

Vanessa's fingers tapped the table slowly.

"Let the game begin."

Chelsea grabbed a bottle of juice from the counter and turned around

Only to bump into someone.

The bottle slipped from her hand and spilled across the floor.

"Watch where you're going," a girl snapped.

Chelsea looked up.

It was one of Vanessa's friends.

Chelsea sighed.

"Sorry."

But the girl didn't move.

Instead, she stepped closer.

"You should be more careful."

Chelsea narrowed her eyes slightly.

"I said I was sorry."

Another girl joined them.

Then another.

Chelsea quickly realized what was happening.

Vanessa's gang had surrounded her.

Lisa, who had been sitting at another table, stood up nervously.

"This isn't good…" she muttered.

Vanessa approached slowly, heels clicking against the cafeteria floor.

Students began watching openly now.

Drama was better than lunch.

"Well, well," Vanessa said softly.

"Look what happened."

Chelsea crossed her arms.

"It was an accident."

Vanessa tilted her head.

"You seem to have a lot of accidents lately."

Chelsea stayed calm.

She refused to give Vanessa the reaction she wanted.

"Do you need something?" Chelsea asked flatly.

Vanessa stepped closer.

"Yes."

Her voice lowered.

"Stay away from Adrian."

Chelsea blinked.

Then she laughed.

Not loudly.

But enough.

Vanessa's eyes flashed with anger.

"You think this is funny?"

Chelsea shrugged.

"You're acting like you own him."

Vanessa leaned forward.

"I could make your life here very difficult."

The cafeteria went silent.

Chelsea stared directly into Vanessa's eyes.

"Try."

Suddenly—

A chair scraped loudly against the floor.

Everyone turned.

Adrian stood up from his table.

His expression was calm.

But his eyes were cold.

He walked slowly toward the group.

Vanessa immediately straightened.

"Adrian—"

He ignored her.

Instead, he stopped beside Chelsea.

"Is there a problem?"

Vanessa forced a sweet smile.

"Of course not."

Chelsea sighed.

"I spilled juice. Apparently that's a crime now."

Adrian glanced at the girls surrounding her.

Then he looked back at Vanessa.

His voice was quiet.

"But dangerous."

"Move."

Vanessa's friends hesitated.

Vanessa quickly waved them back.

"Relax," she said lightly.

"We were just talking."

Adrian didn't smile.

"Talk somewhere else."

The tension in the room was thick enough to cut.

Vanessa stared at him for a few seconds.

Then she laughed softly.

"Fine."

She stepped back.

But before leaving, she leaned closer to Chelsea.

And whispered.

"This isn't over."

Then she walked away with her gang.

The cafeteria slowly returned to life.

Chelsea bent down to grab a napkin and clean the spilled juice.

Adrian crouched beside her.

"You handled that well."

Chelsea rolled her eyes.

"You didn't need to intervene."

"Maybe."

He handed her another napkin.

"But it looked like fun."

Chelsea smirked slightly.

"You enjoy chaos, don't you?"

Adrian shrugged.

"Sometimes."

Chelsea stood up and threw the napkin away.

"You just made things worse."

"How?"

"Now she thinks we're on the same side."

Adrian leaned casually against the counter.

"Aren't we?"

Chelsea froze.

Then she shook her head.

"No."

But her voice sounded less convincing than she hoped.

Across the cafeteria…

Vanessa sat down at her table again.

Her gang looked nervous.

"She embarrassed you," one of them said.

Vanessa shook her head slowly.

"No."

Her eyes followed Chelsea and Adrian across the room.

"She just made this more interesting."

One girl leaned closer.

"What are you going to do?"

Vanessa smiled again.

This time darker.

"We're going to remind everyone who runs this school."

That afternoon…

As classes ended and students started leaving the building, Chelsea walked toward the gate with Mia.

"You okay?" Mia asked.

Chelsea sighed.

"I think I just started a war."

Mia laughed nervously.

"With Vanessa? Yeah… probably."

Chelsea rubbed her forehead.

"This school used to be peaceful."

Behind them—

Adrian walked out of the building.

He spotted Chelsea immediately.

And that familiar smirk returned.

Chelsea noticed.

And groaned.

"Great," she muttered.

"What now?" Mia asked.

Chelsea sighed.

"More trouble."

But deep down…

Part of her wasn't completely unhappy about it.
