Chapter 17 - The Golden Coward

The courtyard fell entirely silent.

Hundreds of wealthy initiates stared at the boy who had just walked out of the Abyss. Kaelen was a terrifying sight. His ragged clothes were soaked in black corrosive blood. Gray ash coated his arms up to his elbows. He looked like a demon forged in the darkest depths of the Lower Tiers.

Lord Valerius stumbled backward. All the color drained from his aristocratic face. His carefully constructed lie shattered instantly.

"Impossible," Valerius gasped. His voice trembled violently. "The floor collapsed. You fell into the chasm."

"I climbed back out," Kaelen stated coldly. He took a slow step forward. His heavy boots cracked the pristine white marble beneath his feet. The ambient Silver Rank essence still radiated from his muscles. The sheer pressure of his newly acquired stats pushed the surrounding initiates away.

"Kill him!" Valerius shrieked. He pointed a shaking finger at Kaelen. Panic completely consumed his mind. "He is an Abyssal parasite! He murdered my mercenaries in the dark! He tried to kill Lady Lyra! Shoot him!"

The Platinum armored guards raised their repeating crossbows. The lethal bolts hummed with concentrated kinetic energy. They aimed directly at Kaelen's chest.

Kaelen did not stop walking. His abyssal black eyes remained locked entirely on Valerius.

"Hold your fire." The magically amplified voice of the Gold Tier knight echoed across the courtyard. The towering man stepped to the edge of the floating podium. His sharp eyes analyzed Kaelen with intense scrutiny. "The boy holds a trial token. He emerged from the labyrinth alive. He has the right to stand in this courtyard."

"He is a murderer!" Valerius screamed, his voice cracking with desperation. He realized the guards were not going to save him. The terrified noble drew a hidden weapon from his silk robes. It was a slender stiletto, its blade coated in a lethal, glowing green poison.

Valerius lunged forward. He channeled all his remaining Aether into his legs, attempting to catch Kaelen off guard.

Kaelen did not even blink. Time seemed to freeze around him. His newly acquired Silver Rank agility made the noble look like he was moving through thick mud. Kaelen could see every single flaw in the boy's form. The wide stance. The trembling grip. The absolute lack of real combat experience.

Kaelen allowed the blade to strike him.

The poisoned stiletto hit Kaelen directly in the center of his chest. It struck the exact spot where his Void Core rested beneath his magically hardened skin.

A loud metallic snap echoed in the silent courtyard. The expensive blade shattered into a dozen pieces. It failed completely to pierce the Ironclad Carapace.

The kinetic energy of the thrust did not dissipate. Kaelen's new passive skill activated instantly. The Kinetic Absorption system drew the impact directly into his muscles, storing the energy like a coiled spring. His right arm began to glow with a volatile, blinding white light.

Valerius stared at his broken hilt in absolute horror.

Kaelen reached out and grabbed the noble by the throat. He lifted Valerius completely off the marble floor with one hand. The boy kicked and thrashed, gasping for air as Kaelen's iron grip crushed his windpipe.

"You nobles believe power is a birthright," Kaelen whispered. His voice was soft, but it carried clearly in the silent courtyard. "You think you can buy survival with gold and mercenaries. You know absolutely nothing about survival."

The Void Core pulsed hungrily against Kaelen's ribs. It demanded a meal.

Shadowy black tendrils seeped out of Kaelen's palm. They wrapped around the noble's neck like venomous vipers. Kaelen did not want to devour the boy entirely. Killing a noble scion in broad daylight would force the Gold Tier knight to execute him. But he needed to send a message. He needed to establish utter dominance.

The dark tendrils pierced the noble's skin. They bypassed flesh and bone, sinking directly into his weak Aether core.

Valerius unleashed a muffled, gurgling scream. His eyes rolled back in his head. Kaelen violently ripped a fraction of the boy's golden magic from his body. It was a pathetic, low density essence, but the act of stealing it was agonizing.

The dark tendrils retreated. Kaelen released his grip.

Valerius collapsed onto the pristine marble floor. He landed in a pathetic heap, coughing and weeping uncontrollably. A dark stain spread across the front of his expensive silk trousers. The arrogant scion of Sector One had wet himself in front of the entire Vanguard Guild.

Kaelen looked down at him with pure disgust. "If you ever look at me again, I will devour your heart."

A slow, rhythmic clapping broke the heavy silence of the courtyard.

Kaelen shifted his gaze. Vanguard Captain Vane stepped out from behind a stone pillar. The one armed man wore his pristine silver uniform and his signature cynical smile. He walked casually past the terrified initiates and stood right beside Kaelen.

"What a magnificent display," Vane chuckled. He looked down at the weeping noble on the floor. "House Valerius will be scrubbing this stain from their reputation for decades."

The Gold Tier knight leaped down from the floating podium. He landed on the marble floor with a heavy, metallic thud that shook the courtyard. He approached Kaelen, his expression unreadable behind his golden visor.

"You destroyed the labyrinth," the Gold Knight stated. It was not a question. "The scrying crystals went dark after a massive magical implosion. The entire lower strata collapsed."

"The labyrinth possessed a structural flaw," Kaelen replied smoothly. He kept the stored kinetic energy in his right arm perfectly contained, ready to release it if the Gold Knight decided to attack. "I simply exploited it to survive."

The Gold Knight stared at Kaelen for a long, tense moment. He looked at the unconscious form of Lyra, who was currently being treated by the Guild healers. He looked at the gray ash coating Kaelen's hands.

"The Vanguard Guild does not care about structural flaws," the Gold Knight finally said. His booming voice carried across the entire courtyard. "We only care about results. You entered the dark. You survived. You brought a fallen comrade back to the light."

The Gold Knight reached into his heavy armored pouch. He pulled out a polished silver token. It was engraved with a soaring eagle holding a broken sword. The mark of an official Vanguard Initiate.

He held the token out to Kaelen.

"Welcome to the Vanguard, survivor."

Kaelen looked at the silver metal. It gleamed brightly in the golden sunlight. It was the exact opposite of the pitch black Void Core resting in his chest. It represented everything he had fought, bled, and suffered to achieve. He had clawed his way out of the toxic mud of the Scrap Chutes. He had devoured monsters and men. He had survived the Abyss.

He reached out with his left hand and took the token.

"Thank you," Kaelen said.

"Do not thank me yet," the Gold Knight warned. "The trials were merely a filter to remove the weak. Your real training begins tomorrow. I suggest you find a bath and a fresh change of clothes before then. You smell like a rotting corpse."

The towering knight turned around and began shouting orders at the Platinum guards, instructing them to clean up the mess Valerius had made.

Captain Vane stepped closer to Kaelen. The cynical smile on his face vanished, replaced by a cold, calculating look.

"You played a dangerous game today, kid," Vane whispered quietly so no one else could hear. "Draining a noble in front of the entire Guild. You are lucky Sterling is a pragmatist."

"Sterling?" Kaelen asked.

"Guildmaster Sterling," Vane clarified. "The man who just handed you your future. Do not disappoint him. And more importantly, do not disappoint me. I vouched for you in the slums. My reputation is now tied to yours."

Vane turned and walked away, disappearing into the crowded courtyard.

Kaelen stood alone. He gripped the silver token tightly in his hand. The ethereal blue interface flickered to life in his vision, casting a faint glow over the sunny courtyard.

[Milestone Achieved: High Tier Status Secured.] [Calculating new evolutionary pathways.] [Host must consume Silver Rank sentient essence to advance.]

Kaelen dismissed the glowing text. He had a safe place to sleep tonight. He had an official rank. He had access to the pristine Aether of the Upper Tiers. But the system was already demanding more.

The hunger never stopped.

Kaelen looked toward the towering crystal spires of the High Tiers. A cold, predatory smile touched his lips. He was no longer a rat scurrying in the dark. He was a wolf in the sheep pen.

He released the pent up kinetic energy stored in his right arm directly into the ground beneath him. A localized shockwave shattered the marble tiles into powder, leaving a deep crater where he stood.

Kaelen walked away without looking back.
