Chapter 74 - What It Feels Like to Be Watched

The consultant office was too nice.

That was Damian's first problem.

The second problem was that he had nothing to do in it.

He had arrived at 8am.

He had unpacked the company laptop.

He had read the brief Marcus had sent — three paragraphs explaining the cover, what was expected of him, what was not.

Show up.

Be visible.

Attend select meetings when required.

Look like someone with a reason to be here.

That was the full scope of his responsibilities as a temporary consultant for Walker Corporation.

Marcus had been very clear about that.

What Marcus had not explained was what to do with eight hours of purposelessness in a glass office on the thirty-eighth floor of a building where every single employee who walked past the corridor slowed down slightly when they saw him.

Not stopped.

Just — slowed.

The way people slowed when they passed something they recognized but weren't sure how to categorize.

Damian knew exactly what they were thinking.
