Chapter 8 - Chapter 8: Mito Uzumaki

The footsteps echoing down the stone corridor were neither hurried nor heavy. They were soft, measured, and absolute.

As the figure rounded the corner, the tension in the hallway shifted instantly. The two ANBU guards immediately straightened, their masked heads dipping in respectful acknowledgment. Minato stepped back to clear the doorway, bowing deeply. Even Shikaku pushed off the wall, dropping his lazy posture entirely.

Mito Uzumaki walked into the damp cell.

She wore traditional white-and-red robes that trailed smoothly along the flagstones. Her deep crimson hair, streaked with delicate strands of silver, was bound neatly in twin buns pinned with ornate hairpicks. She carried no weapons and exuded no hostility, yet her presence filled the cramped basement room completely. She was the surviving matriarch of the Uzumaki clan and the widow of Hashirama Senju. A living pillar of the village's founding era. She did not need to shout to command a room; the air simply settled around her.

Sitting on the cold floor, Kisuke stared at her, his dark eyes narrowing as his Kagura Mind's Eye instinctively expanded to map her.

What he sensed made his stomach drop.

Her outer chakra was vast, dense, and tightly refined. An ocean of controlled, ancient power that felt undeniably familiar, carrying the same resilient quality he had already noticed in Kushina's chakra and in his own. But beneath that calm surface, sealed somewhere deep within her chakra, lay something else.

It was colossal. Dark, primordial, and suffocatingly massive, like a slumbering volcano buried behind layers he couldn't begin to understand. Kisuke couldn't make out its shape or intent, but the sheer volume of it sent a cold, prickling shock down his spine. His eyes widened slightly, his chest tightening as his mind screamed a silent warning: There is something monstrous trapped inside that old woman.

Mito's calm, dark eyes drifted across the room, taking in the battered iron door hanging open on its broken latch, the dust-heavy air, and the tense faces of those present.

"Lord Hokage," Mito said softly. Her voice was smooth and gentle, yet it carried an undeniable weight.

"Mito-sama," Hiruzen replied, inclining his head with deep, genuine reverence. "I did not expect you to travel down to the lower holding wing yourself."

"When word reaches me that a red-haired child claiming our name was brought into the village in chains, I do not wait for reports," Mito said simply.

Her gaze turned toward the floor, settling directly on Kisuke.

She studied him with sharp, quiet intensity. She noted the vibrant red hair falling over his forehead, the monstrous, unguided reserves pulsing beneath his skin, and the sharp, hyper-aware flicker of his eyes that signaled a natural sensory talent. She saw how his small body was pressed back into the corner, his weight balanced subtly on his heels, instinctively positioning himself to watch the door, the Hokage, and the windowless walls all at once. The posture of a survivor who never trusted an enclosed space.

And then, her eyes rested on the glowing blue sealing formulas wrapped around his wrists and ankles.

"Child," Mito said, stepping closer. Her tone was not cold, but direct. "What is your name?"

Kisuke swallowed the lump in his throat, forcing his usual guarded posture back over his rising unease. He rattled his wrist chains against the stone floor, meeting her gaze head-on with stubborn defiance.

"Uzumaki Kisuke," he answered clearly.

The name hung in the damp air of the cell. For a brief second, Mito's eyes softened, a faint, fleeting shadow of grief passing over her features before her tranquil expression smoothed over once more.

"Uzumaki," Mito repeated quietly. She turned her head toward Hiruzen. "Explain to me how he was found."

"Minato, Kushina, and Shikaku encountered him deep within the Land of Fire," Hiruzen explained, his tone measured and formal. "He was living in a secluded cabin with an elderly former Konoha deserter who raised him for four years. The old man passed away earlier today. Kisuke has received no formal academy training, yet his chakra volume and sensory range are extraordinary."

"They barely had enough food, ya know!" Kushina interjected loudly, taking a step toward Mito. "He was living out in the middle of nowhere, and he doesn't know anything about living in a village!"

Mito remained silent for a long moment, processing the words. An Uzumaki child. Starving, isolated, and hidden in a secluded forest within the borders of the Land of Fire, entirely unaware of his heritage while his clan's home, Uzushio, lay in ash and ruin. A child who had survived the aftermath of a war he was too young to understand, completely alone.

The quiet tragedy of it pressed heavily against Mito's chest, though her face remained an unreadable mask.

Kisuke, feeling the suffocating weight of the old woman's presence and the heavy silence settling over the room, squirmed against his chains and let out a sharp snort.

"Are all old Uzumaki women born with that look?" Kisuke asked, a sarcastic smirk pulling at his mouth as he gestured toward her with his bound hands. "You walk into the Hokage's personal interrogation cell like you own the building. Is that a clan trait, or do you just really hate doors?"

Kushina gasped, her jaw dropping. "Kisuke! Show some respect! That's Mito-sama!"

Mito did not raise her voice. Instead, the faint ghost of a dry smile touched the corners of her lips as she looked down at the boy.

"Some buildings, Kisuke-kun, remember who helped gather the timber to construct them," Mito replied smoothly.

Kisuke blinked, caught off guard by the dry, unfazed response. He clicked his tongue and looked away, grumbling under his breath.

Mito turned her back on the boy, her robes sweeping as she faced the Third Hokage directly. Her calm demeanor did not shift, but the air in the cell grew noticeably colder.

"Hiruzen," Mito said, her voice dropping into a quiet, icy clarity that made even the ANBU at the door hold their breath. "Why is a nine-year-old member of my clan still wearing prisoner restraints?"
