"Do you not see the glaring contradiction of your own existence, Captain?" Baron Strucker bellowed, his voice echoing off the cavern walls. "You are the ultimate product of war! A perfect soldier forged in the absolute crucible of order!"
Strucker's eyes burned with a sickening, feverish fanaticism. Writhe-like mechanical tendrils slithered out from the severed port of his prosthetic arm, sparking with residual energy. He threw his head back, barking a manic, blood-stained laugh. "Yet here you stand, defending freedom! Defending a chaotic ideal you fundamentally do not belong to!"
Steve didn't hesitate. He drove the edge of his vibranium shield directly into Strucker's damaged shoulder, following up with a devastating sweep of his leg that sent the Baron crashing to the floor.
"Humanity is born free, Strucker," Steve countered, his breathing steady. "But absolute, unchecked freedom just means the strong devour the weak. People have different desires. Different ways of living. Without boundaries, they just slaughter each other."
Steve stepped forward, his shield raised. "Order exists to prevent that slaughter. We sacrifice the freedom to harm others so we can establish a society. That is how we defend true freedom."
Strucker rolled, narrowly dodging another shield bash. He scrambled to his feet, catching the vibranium disc with both hands as it ricocheted off a pillar. He lunged, driving his left fist toward Steve's jaw.
"The masses will surrender their freedom willingly!" Strucker spat. "When the monsters at their gates become too terrifying, they will trade every ounce of their liberty for the illusion of safety! When the fear of death eclipses their thirst for freedom, they will kneel on their own, Captain! You cannot halt human nature!"
"Is that right?"
Steve's fist slammed into the center of his captured shield. The vibranium rang like a massive bell. The concussive vibration forced Strucker to instinctively release his grip. In a blur of motion, Steve ripped the shield free and slammed it down flat against the top of Strucker's skull.
Strucker crumpled to his knees.
"If people are willing to surrender their rights out of terror," Steve said, standing over the bleeding Baron, "it doesn't prove that freedom is flawed. It just proves that the people defending them aren't fighting hard enough yet."
Steve's voice dropped to a cold, hard register. "Hydra is exactly the same as the Third Reich. You think you're an advanced evolution. You think free will is a disease. Let me tell you something you still haven't learned. A soldier who volunteers to fight for his home will always hit harder, last longer, and bleed more willingly than any fanatic you conscript through propaganda and fear."
Strucker spat a thick wad of blood and two shattered teeth onto the marble. A grotesque, bubbling laugh escaped his throat.
"Are you certain about that, Captain?" Strucker wheezed. "When your oldest friend looks you in the eye and has absolutely no memory of your name... are you truly going to put a bullet in his head?"
A sudden, blistering wave of heat washed over the corridor. Steve turned.
Floating down from the cavern ceiling, wreathed in blinding, white-hot flames, was Jim Hammond. The original Human Torch.
Steve didn't look back at the Baron. He casually backhanded Strucker across the temple with the heavy edge of his shield, instantly knocking the Hydra leader unconscious. Steve kept his eyes locked on the descending fireball.
"...Are you still in there, Jim?" Steve asked softly.
Earlier that evening, before the drop into Budapest, Steve had gathered the strike team in the cargo bay of the Quinjet. He had looked directly at Peter when he spoke.
"I know most of you haven't seen a real war," Steve had said, his voice cutting through the roar of the engines. "You're used to stopping bank robbers and supervillains. You're used to fighting people who just want to steal cash or settle a petty grudge. You need to purge that mindset right now. Hydra does not care about money."
"They have one singular thought in their heads: executing the orders they were given."
"An army is a furnace," Steve had continued. "It melts everyone down and pours them into the exact same mold. Hydra's furnace produces fanatics who genuinely believe they are the saviors of this planet. They are not allowed to think. They are not allowed to question. They will not hesitate."
"We don't have the luxury of trying to redeem them in the middle of a firefight. We aren't here to talk them down. Any trials, any rehabilitation—that happens after the dust settles. Out there today? You show zero hesitation. This is a war. And against Hydra, you are all soldiers."
Peter vaulted over a crumbling concrete barricade, grabbing a Hydra shock trooper by the tactical harness and violently launching the man thirty feet into the air.
"Cap's making a run at Strucker!" Peter yelled over the deafening rattle of automatic gunfire. "Somebody back him up!"
Logan didn't waste breath on a response. Six adamantium claws snikted from his knuckles. He charged straight into the fray, slicing through advanced Hydra body armor like wet tissue paper as he carved a bloody path after Steve.
The Hulk, meanwhile, was treating a platoon of armored vehicles like a personal sandbox, gleefully smashing tanks into scrap metal.
The Wasp—Janet van Dyne—hovered in mid-air, her bio-wings buzzing at a frantic pitch. She had initially darted forward to tail Logan, but she pulled up short, scanning the rapidly deteriorating perimeter.
With Steve and Logan pushing deep into the fortress, that left Peter, Janet, T'Challa, and the Hulk standing completely exposed in the center of the plaza. Thousands of Hydra soldiers were swarming the perimeter, raising their energy rifles.
Janet sighed, her voice crackling over the comms. "Right. So it's just the four of us against roughly three thousand heavily armed fascists. Seems fair."
The Hulk clearly didn't mind the odds. He grabbed two Hydra troopers by their ankles, using them as makeshift baseball bats to bludgeon a dozen of their comrades. He threw his massive green head back and unleashed a deafening, earth-shaking roar.
"Actually, on second thought," Janet quipped, "the big guy might just solo this."
She spoke a second too soon.
The ground shuddered violently. A colossal, mechanized nightmare rose from the ruins of the outer courtyard. It was a massive, mobile tank shaped like a grotesque skull, supported by eight terrifying, hydraulic metal tentacles.
The mechanical monstrosity swiveled its optical sensors toward the Pantheon. A series of heavy hatches hissed open on its chassis. It launched four enormous, metallic spheres directly into the plaza. The spheres slammed into the concrete and instantly unfolded, transforming into four towering, dark green robots. They matched the Hulk's height inch-for-inch, the Hydra emblem stamped proudly across their armored chests.
"I really need to stop jinxing us," Janet muttered.
"We will not be fighting them alone," T'Challa said smoothly. The Black Panther spun, hurling two vibranium energy daggers that perfectly pierced the visors of two advancing snipers. "Our reinforcements have arrived."
High above the cavern floor, the dark air filled with the roar of thrusters. Wave after wave of elite Wild Pack mercenaries plummeted from the sky on tactical jetpacks. They hit their deceleration burns perfectly, raining heavy suppression fire down onto the Hydra lines before their boots even touched the ground.
Silver Sable hit the pavement in a flawless tactical crouch, her assault rifle instantly tracking targets. A second later, Felicia Hardy touched down right next to her, unbuckling a stolen jetpack harness.
Peter swung down from a stone archway, landing beside them. He stared at the master thief, completely baffled. "Black Cat? You actually came down here?"
"I have personal business," Felicia said, popping her knuckles.
Peter stared at her for a second, then let out a heavy sigh. "Fine. But you're taking Venom."
The black, viscous sludge of the symbiote peeled away from Peter's gauntlet, compressing into a tight, undulating sphere in his palm. He shoved it directly into Felicia's hands. "You don't have military combat training, and this place is a literal warzone. Put it on."
Felicia blinked, looking sideways at Silvija.
"Don't look at me," Silvija said, expertly swapping a spent magazine without breaking eye contact with the enemy line. "I don't use alien parasites. I actually know how to dodge a bullet."
Peter scanned the immediate area. "Wait. Where's Silk?"
Silvija shook her head. "Silk dropped in ahead of the main assault force. She cleared the landing zone, said the lower levels were secure, and vanished into the sublevels."
Before Peter could respond, a violent, piercing jolt spiked at the base of his skull. His enhanced spider-sense didn't just flare—it dragged at his consciousness like a physical hook.
Something deep within the bowels of the Hydra city was calling directly to him.
PS: Marvel Fun Fact!
The giant, dark green robots deployed by Hydra are classic Marvel enemies known as Dreadnoughts! Originally built by Hydra and later mass-produced by organizations like the Maggia, these towering mechs are specifically designed to combat superhumans. They are heavily armored and come packed with flamethrowers, liquid nitrogen blasters, and high-voltage electrical nodes built directly into their gauntlets!
