High above the Latverian courtyard, Magneto hovered amidst a swirling halo of jagged steel shrapnel. On the castle battlements, the Scarlet Witch's hands glowed with chaotic red energy. Inside the throne room, Reed Richards gripped the edge of the tactical console, his knuckles turning entirely white.
They all witnessed the exact same horrifying sequence.
A blinding flash of corrupt solar energy tore across the sky. Spider-Man was blasted backward into the mud with the force of a falling meteor. Mjolnir, the unbreakable, enchanted hammer of the gods, shattered into a thousand glowing shards.
The silence that followed was heavy and absolute. Almost everyone in the castle assumed the teenager was dead.
Doctor Doom, however, did not flinch. He remained perfectly still, his cold iron mask tilted toward the secondary monitors. He had caught Doctor Strange's reflection in the glass. The Sorcerer Supreme wasn't panicking. He wasn't preparing a defensive ward. Strange was simply standing there, his arms crossed over his chest, sporting a faint, knowing smirk. Doom despised the wizard, but he respected the ancient, prophetic vision of Kamar-Taj. Strange's absolute confidence meant the board hadn't been cleared just yet.
On the main screen, the Zombie Sentry dove into the crater. His jaw unhinged, revealing rows of blood-stained teeth, eager to feast on the broken spider.
He never made it.
A silver fist shot upward from the dust. It caught the Sentry directly under his rotting chin.
The concussive shockwave shattered every remaining pane of glass in Castle Doom. The golden, undead god was violently launched backward, skipping across the sky like a skipped stone before crashing through the sound barrier.
Just a few seconds earlier.
Peter lay at the bottom of the crater. His ribs screamed. His vision swam with dark spots. The heavy, suffocating scent of ozone filled his lungs. He was waiting for the final, fatal bite.
But instead of teeth, he saw stars.
The polluted, ash-choked clouds of Earth-2149 vanished. A vast, impossibly deep galaxy bloomed behind his eyelids. Radiant, warm cosmic energy completely enveloped his broken body.
Peter opened his mouth to ask what was happening, but the energy spoke directly into his mind. It wasn't a single voice. It was a chorus of a trillion whispering stars.
We are one. We are many. We are mortals, and we are immortal.
We are the guardians of life and the spark of creation. We choose the selfless to wield our light.
Peter gasped, his eyes snapping open. He instantly understood the vast, incomprehensible entity merging with his cells. He raised his right hand. Pure, blinding silver energy erupted from his knuckles, catching the diving Sentry and sending the monster into orbit.
Spider-Man floated out of the deep crater.
He didn't look the same. The red and blue suit had fundamentally changed. The material was now a deep, infinite void-black, swirling with actual, shimmering constellations beneath the surface. His entire body looked like a window into deep space. The webbing patterns, the boots, the gauntlets, and the massive spider emblem on his chest were forged from pure, glowing silver.
[Oh, come on,] Venom grumbled in Peter's mind, the symbiote shifting uncomfortably against the new cosmic presence. [Why do we get another roommate squeezing in? Fine. I'll make room. Tell the glowing guy to wipe his feet.]
"He says he's the Uni-Power," Peter muttered aloud, rolling his silver shoulders. The sheer, terrifying weight of the universe hummed in his veins. "So... I guess I'm Captain Universe now."
High above, the Zombie Sentry stabilized his flight path. He looked down at the glowing figure, a mixture of ravenous anger and sudden, creeping terror twisting his rotting face. He was furious that his meal had fought back. But he was terrified because his cosmic senses were screaming that the figure hovering below was no longer made of meat.
"Let's see how you like the upgrade!" Peter shouted.
He rocketed into the sky, crossing the distance in a microscopic fraction of a second. He threw a right hook. The impact flattened the Sentry's nose, sending him spinning. Peter extended his wrists, habitually curling his middle fingers to his palms to shoot a web-line.
No webbing came out. Instead, a continuous, blinding beam of pure molecular disintegration blasted from his silver wrists.
The beam washed over the Sentry. The golden zombie shrieked as his corrupted flesh began to turn to ash. But the Sentry didn't die. He gritted his teeth, his eyes burning with necrotic light. He tapped into his own molecular control, forcefully rebuilding his decaying cells as fast as Peter's beam broke them down.
"This isn't working," Peter grunted, cutting the beam. "I can't just vaporize him. He's healing too fast."
[Who cares?!] Venom yelled. [The portal is almost closed! Isn't three minutes of stalling enough? Just play defense!]
"No," Peter narrowed his silver lenses. "If I have the power to permanently eliminate patient zero, I have to take the shot."
Peter rushed forward. He drove his knee into the Sentry's chest. The Sentry retaliated with a brutal, solar-charged haymaker to Peter's jaw.
The sheer force of their blows tore the atmosphere apart. In an instant, the two cosmic titans became a blur of silver and gold. They crossed the entirety of Eastern Europe in a matter of seconds. They slammed into the ground, completely flattening a mountain range. They dragged each other through deep trenches of shattered earth, uprooting forests and instantly boiling rivers.
Yet, Peter couldn't gain the absolute upper hand.
The Uni-Power was the ultimate force of light and life—the direct antithesis to Knull's darkness. It allowed Peter to manipulate reality, transmute matter, and command the stars. But the Sentry was powered by a million corrupted suns. He was matching Peter's molecular breakdown with sheer, unyielding brute force.
I can't out-punch him, Peter thought rapidly, dodging a blast of heat vision that melted a glacier. I have to change the rules of the fight.
Peter's hyper-accelerated mind raced through the tactical data. What drove the Marvel Zombies? It wasn't malice. It wasn't an evil agenda. It was a localized, inescapable biological imperative. It was the Hunger Gospel.
Peter blocked a heavy punch, catching the Sentry's rotting fist in his silver hand.
"As a very good friend of mine likes to say," Peter panted, his cosmic aura flaring, "I could do this all day. But I really don't need to."
Peter gathered every single ounce of the Enigma Force into his chest. He didn't focus on destruction. He didn't focus on molecular breakdown. He focused on the absolute, boundless energy of creation.
"I can't cure your virus, buddy," Peter yelled, his voice echoing with the weight of a dying star. "But I can give you exactly what you want! Let me feed you!"
Peter unleashed a blinding, omnidirectional wave of pure, concentrated sustenance. He didn't blast the Sentry; he fed him. He pumped raw, infinite cosmic energy directly into the Sentry's starving, necrotic cells.
The Sentry froze.
The golden zombie dropped his fists. He hung in the air, his milky eyes widening. The endless, agonizing, burning starvation that had commanded his every waking moment suddenly vanished. He was completely, utterly full.
And when the hunger left, the morality returned.
The Sentry dropped out of the sky like a cut marionette. He hit the soft earth of the ruined valley. As Peter floated down, the golden aura faded. The rotting flesh receded. The towering monster was gone, replaced by a painfully thin young man wearing a torn white t-shirt and casual khakis.
It was Robert Reynolds.
Bob pushed himself up onto his knees. He looked down at his hands. He remembered the taste of blood. He remembered tearing his friends apart. He remembered what he had done to his wife.
"Oh my god," Bob sobbed, tears cutting through the grime on his face. He wrapped his arms around his thin chest, rocking back and forth. He looked up at Peter, his eyes filled with absolute, unbearable agony. "What have I done? Please, Spider-Man. End this. End it right now. Please."
Peter landed softly on the grass. He looked at the broken man.
"Farewell, my friend," Peter said softly.
Peter raised his silver hand. A gentle, painless flash of white light enveloped Robert Reynolds. Bob closed his eyes, let out a long breath, and peacefully disintegrated into a cloud of glowing dust.
Patient Zero was gone.
Peter didn't linger. He launched himself back into the sky, tearing across the European continent. He descended on Castle Doom like a silver comet, unleashing wide arcs of cosmic energy that instantly vaporized the remaining tens of thousands of zombies sieging the walls.
Peter landed heavily on the castle balcony. The battle was over. The courtyard was completely silent.
The moment his boots touched the stone, the Enigma Force surged out of his chest. The stars faded from his black suit, leaving him in his standard spider suit. The glowing silver entity floated in the air for a brief second before shooting up into the sky, vanishing into the atmosphere.
Peter slumped against the stone railing, exhausted. "Man. I thought He would stick around a little longer."
Doctor Strange stepped out onto the balcony, his red cloak fluttering in the cold wind. "The Uni-Power is a cosmic immune system, Peter. Once the mysterious force confirms the absolute threat has been neutralized, it immediately vacates the host."
Strange didn't give Peter a second to catch his breath or ask questions.
"Alright, Spider-Man," Strange said, his tone deadly serious. "You and I have a great deal to discuss. But not here. You have overstayed your welcome in this decaying reality. It is time to leave."
