Chapter 1 - The shadow inside the badge

The city of Greyford had always been quiet. It was the kind of place where people left their doors unlocked and children played outside until the streetlights came on. But everything changed one cold winter night when the first body was discovered.

It was early morning when a jogger found the victim near the riverbank. The man lay motionless under the pale light of dawn. There were no clear signs of struggle, no witnesses, and almost nothing that could identify the killer. The news spread through the town like wildfire.

The Greyford Police Department immediately began investigating. Leading the case was Detective Daniel Carter, a respected officer known for his calm mind and sharp instincts. Alongside him were several other officers, including Officer Ryan Mitchell, a friendly and hardworking policeman who had been with the department for three years.

At first, the case seemed like a tragic but isolated crime.

But two weeks later, another body was found.

This time it was in a quiet alley behind a bookstore. Again, there were almost no clues. The victim had no clear connection to the first one. The only similarity was the mysterious symbol drawn with a marker on a nearby wall—a small spiral.

The city grew nervous.

Detective Carter and his team worked day and night. They checked security cameras, interviewed dozens of people, and searched for any pattern that could connect the victims. But nothing seemed to make sense.

Officer Ryan Mitchell was always eager to help. He stayed late, organized files, and even volunteered to patrol areas where the crimes happened. His dedication impressed everyone in the department.

"Ryan's one of our best," Carter once said during a meeting. "If we had ten officers like him, we'd solve every case."

Weeks passed, and the killings continued.

A third victim.

Then a fourth.

Each crime scene was clean, almost carefully arranged. No fingerprints, no clear weapon, and no witnesses. Only the same spiral symbol appearing somewhere nearby.

The media began calling the criminal "The Spiral Killer."

Fear slowly took over Greyford. Shops closed earlier, and people avoided walking alone at night. Parents warned their children not to talk to strangers.

Inside the police department, the pressure kept growing.

Detective Carter studied the case files every evening, trying to understand the killer's mind. Whoever was responsible seemed intelligent and extremely careful.

One night, while reviewing evidence, Carter noticed something strange.

Each crime had happened in different parts of the city—but somehow always within areas recently patrolled by police officers.

At first, it seemed like coincidence. But the more he looked, the more the pattern appeared.

Carter frowned.

"Why would the killer choose places near police patrol routes?" he wondered.

Meanwhile, Officer Ryan Mitchell continued working like a model officer. He comforted victims' families, helped organize community safety programs, and even spoke to the media about how the police were determined to catch the criminal.

To the public, he became a symbol of hope.

But the killings did not stop.

Late one night, a fifth victim was discovered in an abandoned parking lot. Detective Carter arrived at the scene immediately.

As he walked around the area, something caught his attention.

A security camera from a nearby store had recorded a police car passing the street shortly before the estimated time of the crime.

That alone was not suspicious. Police cars often patrolled the area.

But Carter decided to check something.

He went back to the station and reviewed patrol records.

His eyes slowly widened.

The same police car had been near every single crime scene on the night each murder happened.

The car belonged to Officer Ryan Mitchell.

Carter felt a chill run down his spine.

"No… that can't be right," he whispered.

Ryan had always been cooperative and helpful. He had even assisted in several parts of the investigation.

Still, Carter knew he had to be certain.

Over the next few days, he quietly watched Ryan's behavior. Everything seemed normal. Ryan joked with colleagues, did his paperwork, and followed his patrol schedule.

But Carter noticed one thing.

Ryan always volunteered for night shifts in the same districts where previous crimes had happened.

Suspicion slowly turned into fear.

Carter requested permission to secretly track Ryan's patrol car for a few nights.

The department approved.

On the third night of surveillance, something happened.

Ryan's patrol car stopped near a quiet residential street around midnight. Instead of continuing his patrol, he parked and turned off the lights.

Carter and another officer watched from a distance.

Ten minutes passed.

Then Ryan stepped out of the car and walked into a narrow side street.

Carter followed carefully.

At the end of the street stood an old warehouse. The door creaked open as Ryan entered.

Carter signaled his partner and slowly pushed the door open.

Inside, the building was dimly lit.

Ryan stood in the middle of the room.

On a nearby wall, the same spiral symbol had been drawn again.

Ryan turned slowly when he heard the footsteps.

His expression was calm.

"Detective Carter," he said quietly. "I was wondering how long it would take."

Carter stared at him in disbelief.

"Ryan… why?"

Ryan gave a faint smile.

"Because I knew no one would suspect a police officer."

The room felt silent and heavy.

Ryan continued speaking, almost casually.

"People trust the badge. They never question it. I was always the first to arrive, the first to see the evidence… and the first to remove anything that could expose me."

Carter clenched his fists.

"You helped us search for the killer."

"Yes," Ryan replied. "And it was… fascinating. Watching everyone chase shadows while I stood beside them."

Police sirens soon echoed outside as backup arrived.

Ryan did not resist arrest.

As officers placed handcuffs on him, he simply looked at Carter and said,

"The scariest monsters aren't hiding in the dark, Detective."

He glanced at the badge on his uniform.

"Sometimes they wear the same uniform as you."

The arrest shocked the entire city.

The officer people trusted most had been the killer all along.

The case was finally closed, but the memory of it stayed in Greyford for years.

Because the truth was far more frightening than anyone imagined.

The danger had never been outside the police force.

It had been inside it.
