Chapter 1 - chapter 1 : The Brand

The ash smelled like incense.

That was the first thing Karim noticed when the stranger's body finished dissolving — not the screams of the market crowd, not the soldiers already pushing through toward him, but the faint sweetness of cedar and old smoke rising from the pile of grey dust at his feet.

He stared at the black jade tablet in his palm.

It was warm. Not the warmth of a held object — the warmth of something *breathing.*

**[ SYSTEM INITIALIZING… ]**

The words appeared inside his skull, not his eyes. A pressure behind his temples, then a pop, like a bubble of silence bursting open. He almost dropped the tablet.

"There he is!"

The soldiers broke through the crowd. Six of them, silver rank by their sashes, hands already on their Qi-blades. The people around Karim scattered. A woman grabbed her child and ran. A merchant overturned his cart to get away faster.

Not from the soldiers.

From Karim.

He was used to it.

He held up his wrist — the reflex of ten years — showing the brand before they could draw their blades. A black circle with a diagonal slash. The universal mark of a Hollow.

The lead soldier stopped. His hand stayed on his sword.

"Did you do this?" He gestured at the ash. "Did you drain him?"

"No." Karim kept his voice flat. "He was already dying when he grabbed me."

"Hollows don't get to speak in their defense—"

"Sergeant." One of the others touched the leader's arm, nodding toward the ash. "Look at the residue pattern. That's spontaneous dissolution. Natural death. The Hollow didn't do anything."

A pause.

The sergeant looked at Karim the way everyone looked at him — like a problem that hadn't been solved yet.

"Move on," he finally said. "And Hollow — get out of the market district. You know the rules."

Karim knew the rules. He had been knowing the rules since the day he was six years old and his father held his wrist over a branding iron while the clan elders watched and his mother looked away.

He knew every rule they had ever made for creatures like him.

He walked.

---

The tablet spoke again when he reached the edge of the outer city, where the buildings turned to leaning wood and the streets turned to dirt and the people turned to the kind who didn't bother running from Hollows because they had worse things to worry about.

Karim sat down on a broken stone step and looked at the words floating in the quiet space behind his eyes for a long time.

Then, for the first time in ten years, the corner of his mouth moved.

It wasn't a smile exactly.

It was the expression of someone who had just realized the cage they'd been locked in had a door — and the door had always been open — and the people who built the cage had simply never imagined he'd think to push it.

He closed his hand around the warm tablet.

*Feed it everything.*

---

Twelve hours later, in a dim room above a tavern that didn't ask names, Karim sat cross-legged on the floor and felt the city's ambient Qi flowing through the walls, through the wood, through the sleeping bodies of a hundred strangers — and for the first time in his life, he didn't fight what he was.

He breathed in.

And the Hollow breathed with him.

**[ Ambient Qi Absorbed: 47 / 1,000 ]**

It was slow. It would take days. Maybe weeks.

He didn't care. He had been waiting ten years.

What were a few more days?

---

Three floors below, a man in a white cultivation robe sat at the tavern bar and pressed two fingers to his temple with a frown. His Qi reserves, full when he walked in, had dropped by a noticeable margin.

He looked around the room.

Nothing. No cultivator. No formation circle.

He shook his head, paid for his drink, and left.

**[ Ambient Qi Absorbed: 51 / 1,000 ]**

Karim didn't even notice him
