Chapter 46 - The Hand Behind the Flame

The candlelight inside the safehouse flickered against old stone walls, casting long, shifting shadows that made the room feel deeper than it was. Dust clung to every surface, but the center had been cleared—deliberately. Prepared.

Kate Argent leaned casually against a wooden table, one hand resting near her rifle. Across from her stood the man Aiden had seen before—the one with the coin, the one who had spoken in warnings instead of threats.

Up close, he looked even less like a fighter and more like something else entirely.

A watcher.

An observer.

Someone who didn't need strength because he moved pieces instead.

Allison crouched beside Aiden near the window, her breath slow, controlled. But her fingers tightened around the bowstring.

"That's him," she whispered.

Aiden didn't respond.

He was watching.

Listening.

Inside, Kate tilted her head slightly. "You're quiet tonight."

The man didn't look at her. His attention was somewhere else.

"Because we're not alone."

Kate smiled faintly. "Of course we're not."

She picked up her rifle, not aiming yet, just holding it loosely. "They followed exactly like you said they would."

Aiden's eyes narrowed.

So this had been expected.

The man finally spoke again. "Predictable behavior is the easiest to control."

Allison's jaw tightened at that.

Kate's tone was amused. "And what about him?"

She didn't say Aiden's name.

She didn't need to.

The man's gaze shifted—directly toward the window.

For a brief second, Aiden felt it.

Recognition.

Not surprise.

Confirmation.

"He doesn't follow patterns," the man said calmly. "That's why he matters."

Allison's heartbeat spiked.

Aiden didn't move.

Kate's smile sharpened. "So he's the one you're interested in."

"Yes."

That single word carried more weight than anything else said so far.

Kate let out a quiet breath. "Good. Because I don't like unknown variables."

She lifted the rifle slightly.

"Can I kill him?"

The man didn't answer immediately.

Then—

"No."

Kate frowned.

"Why not?"

"Because," the man said, voice even, "he's already part of something you don't understand."

Silence.

For once, Kate didn't have a witty reply.

Aiden exhaled slowly.

That was enough.

He moved.

The window shattered inward as he stepped through, glass scattering across the floor like sharp rain.

Allison followed instantly, rolling through the opening with practiced precision, bow already drawn.

Kate reacted fast.

The rifle came up—

—but Aiden was faster.

He closed the distance in a blur, knocking the weapon aside before it could fire. The shot went wide, blasting into the wall behind him.

Allison's arrow flew a second later.

It struck the table, inches from Kate's hand.

A warning.

Kate's eyes flicked to her niece.

"Still hesitating."

Allison's voice was steady. "Put the weapon down."

Kate smiled.

"No."

She reached for a second knife—

—but Aiden caught her wrist again.

This time, he didn't just stop her.

He twisted.

Not enough to break.

Enough to make her drop the blade.

Kate sucked in a sharp breath, more annoyed than hurt.

"You're starting to irritate me."

Aiden's voice was cold. "Good."

Behind them, the back door burst open.

Derek stormed in first, Scott right behind him, with Jackson just a step slower but still keeping up. The moment Derek saw Kate, his control snapped again.

But this time—

he stopped.

Aiden hadn't told him to.

But he still stopped.

Because now he understood.

Rushing in blindly was exactly what she wanted.

Kate noticed it too.

Her smile faded slightly.

"That's new."

Peter strolled in last, as if arriving late to a dinner party. His eyes moved from Kate to the man beside her.

"Ah," Peter murmured, "and here I thought you were just being nostalgic."

The man finally turned fully toward them.

Calm.

Unshaken.

"Peter Hale."

Peter's grin widened. "You know me. I'm flattered."

"I know what you are," the man corrected.

That made Peter's expression sharpen—just slightly.

Scott looked between everyone. "Can someone explain who this guy is?"

The man ignored him.

His attention stayed on Aiden.

"You've accelerated things."

Aiden stepped forward, releasing Kate and placing himself between her and the others.

"Then stop hiding and explain."

The man studied him for a moment.

"You already know enough."

"That's not how this works," Aiden said.

A faint smile appeared.

"No," the man agreed. "It isn't."

Kate flexed her wrist, stepping back slightly but not retreating fully.

"I'm starting to feel left out."

Peter chuckled. "You usually are when the conversation becomes intelligent."

She shot him a glare, but didn't respond.

The man finally spoke again.

"There are structures in this world," he said. "Old ones. Older than your species divisions. Older than hunters and werewolves."

Scott frowned. "Species divisions?"

"No one asked you," Stiles muttered from the doorway.

The man continued as if they weren't there.

"These structures maintain balance."

Aiden's eyes narrowed.

"And you're part of that."

"Yes."

The room seemed to grow colder.

Allison stepped closer to Aiden, her voice low. "Balance?"

The man nodded slightly.

"Power rises. Power answers. That is the rule."

His gaze locked onto Aiden.

"You are not from this system."

Silence.

Heavy.

Even Peter stopped smiling.

Derek's expression hardened. "What does that mean?"

"It means," the man said calmly, "he wasn't meant to exist here."

Scott blinked. "Okay, I officially hate this guy."

Aiden didn't react outwardly.

But inside—

something clicked.

The man wasn't guessing.

He knew.

Kate looked between them, intrigued again. "Now that… is interesting."

Aiden took another step forward.

"Then say it clearly."

The man held his gaze.

"You're an anomaly."

A pause.

"A catalyst."

Another pause.

"And everything waking up in this town?"

His voice dropped slightly.

"…is because of you."

The words didn't shake Aiden.

But they hit everyone else.

Scott stared at him.

Derek's eyes narrowed further.

Allison's breath slowed, but she didn't step away.

She stayed right where she was.

Kate let out a soft laugh. "Well, that explains a lot."

Peter tilted his head slightly, watching Aiden with renewed interest.

"Yes," Peter murmured, "it really does."

Aiden's expression remained calm.

Unmoved.

"Then you've made a mistake."

The man raised an eyebrow.

"Oh?"

Aiden's eyes burned faintly.

"Because if I'm the reason this is starting…"

A pause.

"Then I decide how it ends."

For the first time—

the man didn't immediately respond.

Not because he was afraid.

Because he was evaluating.

And that—

was more dangerous.

Kate picked up her fallen knife, spinning it lightly in her hand.

"Looks like I picked the right side."

Aiden didn't even glance at her.

"Wrong."

Before she could react—

he moved.

Fast.

Decisive.

His hand slammed into the table, flipping it upward and sending Kate back a step as the room exploded into motion.

Derek lunged.

Scott followed.

Allison's arrow flew.

And this time—

there was no holding back.

Because now—

the truth was out.

And the war had officially begun.
