Chapter 4 - CHAPTER 3: THE MAN WITH THE GENTLE SMILE

The afternoon sun filtered softly through the tall windows of the hospital in Lagos, painting warm streaks of light across the polished floor. The busy corridors had quieted slightly, but the steady rhythm of hospital life continued. Machines beeped softly in distant rooms, nurses spoke in hushed tones, and patients rested after long treatments.

Amara Bello moved calmly from one patient room to another, carrying a tray of medications. Her steps were steady and practiced, but her thoughts were strangely restless. Every now and then, without meaning to, her mind drifted back to the man she had met earlier that morning.

Ethan Cole.

It annoyed her that she remembered his name so easily.

She pushed the thought aside as she entered the rehabilitation ward to check on a patient recovering from a leg injury. The room was quiet except for a soft voice speaking with encouragement.

"You're doing great," the voice said gently. "Just one more step. I promise you can do it."

Amara paused at the doorway.

Inside the room, Ethan stood beside a middle-aged patient who struggled to balance on crutches. His hands were steady, ready to support the man if he stumbled, but his expression held something deeper—patience, understanding, and genuine belief.

The patient hesitated, fear flickering across his face.

"I don't think I can," the man said quietly.

Ethan shook his head softly.

"You can," he replied. "And when you do, you'll remember this moment for the rest of your life."

The patient took a slow step forward.

Then another.

A few seconds later, he managed three full steps across the floor.

A smile of disbelief spread across his face.

"I did it," the man whispered.

Ethan's smile was warm and proud. "You did."

Watching the moment from the doorway, Amara felt something stir unexpectedly inside her chest. It wasn't just admiration. It was something softer… something warmer.

She stepped into the room, clearing her throat lightly.

"Time for your medication, Mr. Okoye," she said.

Ethan glanced up and noticed her. His eyes brightened slightly with recognition.

"Nurse Amara," he said, his voice carrying that same calm warmth.

Amara nodded politely as she handed the patient his medicine.

"You're making good progress," she told him.

Mr. Okoye chuckled happily. "Thanks to this young man. He refuses to let me give up."

Ethan shrugged modestly. "He did the hard part."

Amara studied him briefly.

There was no pride in his voice, no arrogance. Just quiet sincerity.

"You're good at what you do," she admitted before she could stop herself.

For a moment, Ethan looked genuinely surprised.

"Thank you," he said softly.

Their eyes met briefly, and something unspoken passed between them.

Amara quickly looked away, focusing on adjusting the patient's chart. She didn't like the strange flutter in her chest.

Feelings were dangerous.

She had learned that lesson the hard way.

But Ethan's voice interrupted her thoughts again.

"You care a lot about your patients," he said.

She glanced at him. "It's my job."

"Maybe," he replied gently. "But not everyone does it with that much heart."

His words caught her off guard.

No one had said something like that to her in a long time.

For a moment, Amara felt a small crack in the wall she had carefully built around her emotions.

She turned quickly toward the door.

"I have other patients to check on," she said.

As she walked away, she could feel Ethan's gaze linger for a moment before he returned his attention to his patient.

Out in the hallway, Amara exhaled slowly, pressing a hand lightly against her chest.

Why did a simple conversation feel so unsettling?

Why did his smile keep appearing in her thoughts?

She shook her head firmly.

This was exactly why she avoided getting close to people.

Because sometimes, all it took was one kind smile… to make a guarded heart start remembering how to feel again.

And that frightened her more than she was willing to admit. ❤️📖
