Chapter 5 - Chapter 5 — 24 Hours Until Death

Adrian walked out of the school slowly.

The sun was beginning to set, casting long shadows across the parking lot.

Students talked excitedly about what happened in the science lab.

Sirens echoed in the distance.

Teachers tried to calm everyone down.

But Adrian barely heard any of it.

Because his mind was busy calculating something terrifying.

24 hours.

That was the prediction his brain produced.

Within the next 24 hours…

Someone would attempt to kill him.

Adrian stopped walking.

Inside his mind, thousands of possibilities began forming.

Who would want him dead?

The poisoned ventilation system.

The mysterious laboratory memory.

The man watching from somewhere unknown.

Detective Marcus's warning.

All the pieces connected like a complex puzzle.

One conclusion appeared again and again.

Someone powerful had been watching him for a long time.

And now that his mind had awakened…

He had become a threat.

Adrian resumed walking.

But his eyes moved constantly.

Scanning everything.

Cars.

People.

Windows.

Security cameras.

Every detail.

Inside his head, his brain started running simulations.

Simulation A:

A car accident staged to look natural.

Simulation B:

A poison attack.

Simulation C:

A sudden robbery.

Simulation D:

A sniper attack.

His brain rejected each scenario one by one.

None of them matched the pattern his instincts predicted.

Then another possibility appeared.

Something far more subtle.

An ambush.

Adrian reached the street corner near his house.

The neighborhood was quiet.

Streetlights flickered on.

A few people walked their dogs.

Cars passed occasionally.

Everything looked normal.

Too normal.

Adrian slowed down.

His mind processed the environment rapidly.

A parked black car across the street.

Engine off.

Windows tinted.

The vehicle had been there yesterday.

And the day before.

His brain immediately locked onto it.

Suspicious.

Inside the car, two men sat silently.

Both wearing dark jackets.

Both watching Adrian.

Adrian pretended not to notice.

But inside his mind, calculations exploded.

Distance from the car.

Possible weapons.

Escape routes.

Nearby buildings.

Running paths.

Everything mapped instantly.

Then the car door opened.

One of the men stepped out.

The second followed.

Adrian's mind confirmed it immediately.

Threat level: high.

The first man spoke calmly.

"Adrian Vale."

It wasn't a question.

Adrian remained still.

The man continued walking toward him.

"We'd like to ask you a few questions."

Adrian's brain processed the situation instantly.

The man's posture.

His movements.

His breathing.

These were not normal civilians.

They were trained.

Probably professionals.

Which meant one thing.

This wasn't random.

Adrian asked calmly,

"Who are you?"

The man smiled slightly.

"You can call us… observers."

Inside Adrian's mind, alarms exploded.

Observers.

That word connected with the memory from the laboratory.

The voice from long ago.

"Subject 19 shows abnormal cognitive acceleration."

Adrian's heart beat faster.

They knew.

The second man spoke.

"Your brain activity today exceeded expected limits."

Adrian's eyes narrowed.

"You've been monitoring me."

The first man nodded slightly.

"For many years."

Adrian's thoughts raced.

Many years?

That meant—

"You experimented on me."

The men didn't answer.

Which was already an answer.

The first man sighed.

"We didn't expect your mind to activate this early."

He looked at Adrian carefully.

"But now that it has…"

"…we need to run further tests."

Adrian felt a chill.

Tests.

That word never meant anything good.

The second man stepped forward.

"Come with us."

Adrian's brain immediately simulated what would happen.

If he went with them.

Laboratories.

Experiments.

Observation rooms.

Possibly never returning.

Rejected.

His mind searched for another outcome.

Escape.

But the men were already prepared.

The first man pulled something from his jacket.

A small device.

Not a gun.

Something else.

Adrian's brain identified it instantly.

A neural disruptor.

Designed to temporarily shut down brain activity.

The man spoke calmly.

"This will only hurt for a moment."

Adrian's mind exploded with calculations.

Distance.

Timing.

Reaction speed.

Possible movements.

He had exactly 0.8 seconds to act.

Adrian moved first.

But at that exact moment…

A loud voice shouted from behind.

"HEY!"

All three of them turned.

Standing at the end of the street was someone Adrian recognized.

Detective Marcus Hale.

Marcus held up his badge.

"Police."

His eyes locked onto the two men.

"You guys want to explain what you're doing?"

The men froze.

For a moment, silence filled the street.

Then the first man sighed.

"Unfortunate timing."

Adrian's brain instantly predicted what would happen next.

The men would retreat.

They didn't want police attention.

Exactly as predicted, they stepped backward.

The second man looked at Adrian one last time.

"This isn't over."

The two men quickly entered the black car.

The engine started.

Within seconds, the vehicle disappeared down the street.

Marcus walked toward Adrian.

His expression was serious.

"I had a feeling something like this might happen."

Adrian looked at him.

"You were following me."

Marcus shrugged slightly.

"Call it professional curiosity."

He looked down the street where the car disappeared.

Then back at Adrian.

"You're in deeper trouble than you realize."

Adrian stayed silent.

Marcus spoke quietly.

"Those weren't normal criminals."

He paused.

"They looked like people who work for organizations that don't officially exist."

Adrian's mind already knew that.

Marcus looked directly into his eyes.

"Adrian… what exactly did someone do to your brain?"

Adrian didn't answer.

Because inside his mind…

something even more terrifying had just appeared.

A new prediction.

Not hours.

Not days.

But a future event that would change everything.

Within seven days…

Adrian would meet someone whose mind was just as fast as his.

And that meeting…

would start a war between infinite minds.
