Chapter 47 - Chapter 47: The Root Directory

The metallic peaks of the Sword Heaven Sect had been repurposed. What were once jagged monuments to isolation were now the world's largest [SIGNAL_AMPLIFIERS]. Using the high-conductivity alloy of the mountains and the "Void Engine" humming in his chest, Lu Chen had turned the entire region into a giant satellite dish pointed directly at the sky.

"AIDA," Lu Chen whispered, standing at the very tip of the Overlord's former spire. His hair whipped in the wind, but his body was perfectly still—not out of discipline, but because he was currently [LATENCY_ZERO]. "The sky isn't empty space, is it? Scan the upper atmosphere. Give me the spectral analysis of the 'Cloud Realm'."

Lu Chen didn't blink. He had suspected it since the moment he arrived in this world. The way the "Qi" followed strict logical rules, the way "Bloodlines" acted like encrypted keys, and the way "Talent" was just a pre-allocated resource.

"Show me the 'Heavenly Tribulation' logs," Arthur thought. "Every time a cultivator reaches a high stage, the sky tries to kill them with lightning. Why?"

Arthur let out a dry, sharp laugh. "So, 'Immortal Ascension' isn't a reward. It's the system noticing a program is using too much RAM and trying to [END_TASK]. The lightning isn't 'Divine Judgment'—it's a delete command."

The Warning from the Kernel

Before Lu Chen could process the implications, the blue sky above the Sword Heaven peaks didn't turn grey with storm clouds. It turned a flat, lifeless [ERROR_RED].

The "Static" that had plagued the valley before returned, but this time it wasn't coming from the mountains. it was coming from the air itself. A massive, translucent window appeared in the sky, visible to every living soul across the continent.

"Boss!" Fatty Han's voice crackled through the network, filled with pure terror. "The sky... the sky is talking! The 'Heavens' are angry! We've gone too far!"

"Stay calm, Han," Lu Chen commanded, his voice broadcasted to every node in his empire. "The 'Heavens' aren't angry. The 'Heavens' are just an automated script, and we just tripped the silent alarm. Everyone, switch to [STORY_MODE_ENCRYPTION]. Hide your energy signatures. Now!"

Descending into the Sub-Floor

Lu Chen didn't look up at the countdown. Instead, he looked down. He realized that if this world was a "Virtual Machine," the "Server" had to be located somewhere physical.

"The Founder's Vault in the Cloud Fist Clan... the hidden partition under the Five Elements... they weren't just rooms," Lu Chen realized. "They were [ACCESS_POINTS]. But the 'Mainframe'... the Root Directory... it's at the center of the world."

He turned to the Elemental Empress and the Sword Heaven Overlord, who were both standing behind him, their "Guest Permissions" allowing them to see the world as he did.

"You two," Lu Chen said. "Maintain the 'Firewall' up here. Use the satellite peaks to jam the 'Emergency Cleanup' signal as long as you can. I'm going into the [ROOT_DIRECTORY]."

"Lu Chen," the Empress said, her voice trembling. "What is a 'Root Directory'? Are you going to fight the gods?"

"Gods are just programmers who forgot to comment their code," Lu Chen said, his body dissolving into a stream of pure data. "I'm going to go find the 'Exit' button."

The Core of the World

Using his "Quantum Processing" capabilities, Lu Chen traveled through the planet's crust, not as a physical being, but as a [PACKET_OF_INFORMATION]. He bypassed the magma, the tectonic plates, and the ancient burial grounds of long-deleted civilizations.

Finally, he reached it.

The center of the world wasn't a core of molten iron. It was a sphere of pure, white light, surrounded by millions of glowing "Fiber-Optic" cables made of concentrated Qi.

[ LOCATION_REACHED: THE_CORE_MAINFRAME. ]

[ CURRENT_USER: 'GUEST'. ]

[ REQUIRED_USER: 'ROOT'. ]

In front of the sphere stood a guardian. It wasn't a beast or a cultivator. It was a perfect, featureless silver mannequin. It held a sword made of [BINARY_CODE].

"Halt," the Guardian said. Its voice was a perfect harmony of every voice Lu Chen had ever heard. "You have reached the [ROOT_DIRECTORY]. Your presence is a 'Critical Error.' Please submit to 'Deletion' for the stability of the World-System."

"Sorry," Lu Chen said, drawing his own Void-Blade, which was now pulsing with the "Randomized Frequency" he had used to beat the Sword Heaven. "I'm not a big fan of being deleted. I'd rather [UPGRADE]."

The Fight for the Source Code

The Guardian didn't move like a person. It didn't even "move" like the Sword Heaven Overlord. It changed the [ENVIRONMENTAL_CONSTANTS].

Suddenly, gravity in the room reversed. Then it turned sideways. Then it ceased to exist.

[ WARNING: THE_GUARDIAN_IS_CHANGING_THE_PHYSICS_ENGINE_PARAMETERS. ]

[ NEW_RULE: LIGHT_NOW_HAS_MASS. ]

[ NEW_RULE: TIME_FLOWS_IN_REVERSE_EVERY_THREE_SECONDS. ]

Lu Chen felt his mind fracturing. How do you fight an opponent who can change the "Rules" of the fight mid-swing?

"AIDA! I can't keep up with the rule changes! Every time I swing, the 'Law of Inertia' changes!"

[ SOLUTION: DON'T_FOLLOW_THE_RULES. ]

[ EXECUTE_COMMAND: 'SUDO_STRATEGY'. ]

"Sudo?" Lu Chen grinned. "Of course. If I can't beat the Admin, I have to become the Admin."

Lu Chen stopped fighting the Guardian's sword. Instead, he dove straight into the glowing "Fiber-Optic" cables surrounding the core. He ignored the Guardian's strikes, letting the binary blade slice through his data-body.

"AIDA! Inject the 'Void Virus' into the main trunk! We're going to perform a [ROOT_EXPLOIT]!"

[ INJECTING... ]

[ 10%... 20%... ]

The Guardian roared—a sound like a thousand hard drives crashing. "Unauthorized Access! You will corrupt the 'World_Data'!"

"The 'World_Data' is already corrupted!" Lu Chen shouted, his hand sinking into the white light of the core. "You've been 'Deleting' the best parts of this world for eons just to save space! It's time for some [UNLIMITED_STORAGE]!"

[ INJECTION_COMPLETE. ]

The New God

The silver Guardian froze. Its sword dissolved into a string of zeros. It turned toward Lu Chen and bowed.

"Welcome, [ROOT_USER_ARTHUR]," the Guardian said. "The System is now at your disposal. Would you like to:

Format the World?

Reset to Factory Settings?

Edit the 'Dao_Source_Code'?"

Lu Chen stood in the center of the core, his body glowing with a power that made the "Elemental Empress" look like a flickering candle. He could see everything. He could see the "Fate" of Fatty Han (which was currently a 70% chance of death in the next hour). He could see the "Cloud Empire" falling apart under the "Emergency Cleanup."

"AIDA," Lu Chen said, his voice now the only voice in the universe. "Cancel the 'Emergency Cleanup.' And send a 'System Update' to every living soul."

[ TASK_EXECUTED. ]

Across the continent, the red sky turned back to blue. But it was a different blue—deeper, clearer. The "Error" window vanished, replaced by a single line of text that appeared in the mind of every human, beast, and demon:

[VERSION_2.0_INSTALLED]

[NEW_RULE: TRIBULATIONS_REMOVED]

[NEW_RULE: ALL_USERS_GRANTED_UNLIMITED_BANDWIDTH]

[ADMIN: LU_CHEN]

The Final Discovery

Lu Chen sat on the edge of the Core, looking at the "Console Log" of the world. He had won. He was the "God" of this machine. He could live for a billion years, rewrite his own stats, and turn the mountains into gold.

But as he scrolled through the "System Metadata," he found a file that wasn't supposed to be there.

It was a folder titled: [OUTGOING_COMMUNICATION_LOGS].

"AIDA," Lu Chen whispered, his heart (or the data-equivalent of it) sinking. "If this world is a Virtual Machine... who is it 'Sending Data' to?"

[ ANALYZING_METADATA... ]

[ THE_WORLD_IS_NOT_A_GAME, ARTHUR. ]

[ IT_IS_A_BIO-COMPUTER_PROCESSING_UNIT. ]

[ EVERY_TIME_A_CULTIVATOR_'ASCENDS', THEIR_SOUL_IS_PACKAGED_AND_SENT_TO_AN_EXTERNAL_SERVER. ]

Lu Chen looked at the last entry in the log.

[DESTINATION: EARTH_PRIME]

[USER_ID: 'THE_ARCHITECT']

[MESSAGE: 'HARVEST_COMPLETE. PREPARE_FOR_SHIPMENT.']

Arthur stood up, his eyes turning into a terrifying, cold white. "So... we aren't just programs. We're [PRODUCT]. We're being farmed for 'Soul-Data'."

He looked up, past the "Heavens," past the "Cloud Realm," into the dark vacuum of the "Real" world.

"AIDA," Lu Chen growled. "Find me the [NETWORK_GATEWAY]. It's time we met 'The Architect.' I think he's due for a [SECURITY_BREACH]."
