Charizard and Magmar faced off, surrounded by the churning flows of volcanic lava. The scorching aura radiating from the two Fire-type Pokémon caused the temperature of the entire cavern to skyrocket. Even the magma in the lake seemed to boil in anticipation of the coming duel.
"I've waited a long time for this moment," Blaine said, his eyes flashing with excitement. "Magmar, let our guests see our hospitality! Use Flamethrower!"
"Charizard, use Flamethrower too!" Ash responded, showing no sign of backing down.
Two massive pillars of fire collided in mid-air, unleashing a deafening roar. At the point of impact, searing energy splattered in every direction, and the surrounding air rippled and distorted from the sheer heat.
In this clash of pure power, the two Pokémon were surprisingly evenly matched!
"Impressive strength!" Blaine praised. "But a battle is more than just trading blasts! Magmar, use Smog!"
Magmar exhaled a thick, dense cloud of black smoke that instantly blanketed the entire battlefield. Charizard, trapped in the sudden haze, began to cough as its vision was severely obscured.
"Charizard, take to the air! Use your wings to blow the smoke away!" Ash immediately countered.
Charizard beat its powerful wings and soared upward, the resulting gusts of wind scattering the Smog. However, the moment the air cleared, Magmar was already poised to strike.
"Now, Magmar! Use Thunder Punch!"
Magmar's right fist crackled with golden lightning as it lunged toward the airborne Charizard with startling speed! An Electric-type move would be devastating against a Flying-type like Charizard.
"Dodge it, quick!" Ash shouted.
Charizard pulled into a sharp, desperate turn in mid-air, narrowly avoiding a direct hit. However, the residual static from the Thunder Punch still grazed its wing, forcing a roar of pain from the dragon.
"Charizard, are you alright?" Ash called out from the sidelines, his voice laced with worry.
Charizard looked back at Ash, its eyes burning with an unyielding fighting spirit. It beat its wings forcefully to signal that it could still fight.
"Great!" Ash could feel his partner's determination. "Then we take the initiative! Charizard, use Dragon Rage!"
A surge of brilliant blue energy erupted from Charizard's maw, streaking toward its opponent. Blaine, however, remained unruffled.
"Magmar, use Protect!"
A green barrier expanded in front of Magmar, perfectly neutralizing the Dragon Rage.
"Now it's our turn! Magmar, use Fire Blast!"
The flames Magmar spat out formed a massive character in the air, bearing down on Charizard with destructive force. The range of the attack was enormous, cutting off almost every possible escape route.
"In that case, we'll break through the front! Charizard, use Air Slash!" Ash's eyes narrowed.
Charizard whipped its wings, sending out several razor-sharp blades of compressed wind. The wind blades collided with the Fire Blast, triggering a violent explosion. The shockwave caused the entire platform to tremble, sending plumes of magma leaping meters high from the lake below.
"T-This is terrifying..." The Team Rocket trio huddled together in a corner, shivering in fear.
As the dust settled, both Pokémon were panting heavily. It was clear that the previous exchange had taken a toll on both sides.
"It seems ordinary moves won't settle this," Blaine's expression turned solemn. "Magmar, let's use that!"
Magmar understood immediately. It began to gather an incredible amount of energy into its arms, causing the surrounding temperature to spike so sharply that the rocks at the edge of the platform began to melt.
"This is..." Brock watched in shock. "It's condensing all its fire energy into one point! This power far exceeds a standard Fire Blast!"
"Charizard, we can't lose either!" Ash felt the terrifying pressure of the impending move. "Push your flames to the absolute limit!"
Charizard let out a long, piercing cry as the fire on its tail suddenly surged, turning from a deep orange to a brilliant, searing blue-white. The heat waves radiating from its body distorted the very air.
"End thisBursting Flame Fissure!" Blaine roared.
The flames erupting from Magmar were no longer a simple pillar of fire, but a scorching torrent of pure destruction that seemed to set the oxygen in the air ablaze.
"Charizard, use Blast Burn!" Ash gave it his all.
Charizard took a deep breath and unleashed an equally devastating firestorm. The blue-white flames contained a frightening level of destructive power.
The two ultimate Fire-type techniques collided in the center of the volcano, causing the entire interior of the mountain to vibrate violently! The searing shockwave expanded outward, forcing everyone to cling to nearby fixtures to keep from being blown away. The magma lake erupted into massive waves, turning the entire space into a literal hell of fire.
When the smoke finally drifted away, both Pokémon were seen half-kneeling on the ground. They had reached their limits. Their bodies were covered in scorch marks, and their breathing was labored and heavy.
"W-Was it a draw?" James asked in disbelief.
"No..." Meowth noticed something. "Look at Magmar's legs, meow!"
Magmar's legs were trembling slightly; it had clearly taken the brunt of the final impact. Charizard, though exhausted, still held that same spark of defiance in its eyes, and the flame on its tail continued to burn stubbornly.
"Now's the time!" Ash seized the fleeting opportunity. "Charizard, use Seismic Toss!"
Charizard used every last ounce of its strength to lunge at Magmar. Before the opponent could react, Charizard locked it in a powerful grip and soared straight toward the ceiling!
"What?!" Blaine's face paled.
Spinning at high speeds in mid-air, Charizard traced a perfect arc before using the acceleration of the dive to slam Magmar into the platform!
BOOM!
A massive explosion echoed as a deep crater was carved into the platform. Magmar lay at the bottom, struggling for a moment before finally going still.
"Magmar is unable to battle! Charizard is the winner!" the referee announced loudly. "The victory goes to the challenger, Ash!"
"Awesome! Ash won!" Misty cheered happily, and Brock nodded with a look of approval.
Charizard landed wearily, but it still held its head high, shooting a jet of flame into the air to declare its victory.
Blaine let out a long sigh and recalled Magmar, a gratified smile appearing on his face. "A magnificent battle, Ash. The bond between you and Charizard, along with the wisdom and decisiveness you showed, makes you more than worthy of this badge."
He reached into his robe and pulled out a red, flame-shaped badge, handing it solemnly to Ash. "This is the Volcano Badge, proof of your victory at the Cinnabar Gym."
Ash took the badge, feeling its warmth against his palm. A sense of accomplishment washed over him. "Thank you, Blaine!"
[Ding! Host has defeated Cinnabar Gym Leader Blaine and obtained the Volcano Badge. Reward: 500 World Origin Points.]

[Current World Origin Points: 24,000.]
While the group was celebrating, the Team Rocket trio in the corner was quietly trying to slip away.
"Hold it right there," Blaine said without even turning around. "The three of you caused quite a stir in my inn and even tampered with the gym's mechanisms. You didn't think you could just leave, did you?"
The trio froze in their tracks.
Ash looked at them and suddenly had an idea. "Blaine, since your inn is short on hands, why not let them work off their debt here?"
"Ehh?!" Team Rocket cried out in unison.
Blaine stroked his chin, a meaningful smile growing on his face. "That's actually a great idea. I happen to need some extra staff. They can stay and work. As for their wages... consider them compensation for my losses."
"Nooo!" Jessie wailed.
"We're Team Rocket! We're supposed to be capturing rare Pokémon!" James cried.
"How can we be working odd jobs here, meow!" Meowth protested.
However, under Blaine's commanding gaze and the "kindly" stares of Ash and his friends, Team Rocket eventually succumbed.
And so, in the days that followed, the Riddle Inn on Cinnabar Island gained three "special employees" dressed in maid and butler uniforms (a result of Blaine's peculiar sense of humor).
As he left Cinnabar Island, Ash looked back at the volcano, which was still trailing a plume of smoke.
The seventh badge was his, bringing him one step closer to the Indigo Plateau Conference.
Only one badge remained. Ash clenched his fist, a determined light shining in his eyes. His next goalthe Viridian Gym!
