Chapter 92 - Chapter 91: The Legend of the Crystal Onix

Leaving the peaceful shores of Trovita Island, Ash and his companions continued their journey across the star-studded archipelago of the Orange Islands aboard Lapras.

The sea breeze brushed against their faces under the perfect sunlight. Pikachu lay comfortably on Ash's shoulder, while Togepi let out cheerful chirps from Misty's arms.

As Ash admired the breathtaking view where the sea met the sky, his Aura stirred slightly, sensing a peculiar object bobbing on the waves. He directed Lapras to pull closer and discovered a sealed glass bottle containing a slip of paper.

"It's a message in a bottle!" Misty said, her curiosity piqued.

Ash fished the bottle out, broke the wax seal, and pulled out the note. Written in a childish scrawl were the words: "Does anyone know where the Crystal Onix is? My brother and I are looking for it. Marissa."

"The Crystal Onix?" Tracey adjusted his hat, looking intrigued. "I've heard of that legend. It's said that on one of the islands in the Orange Archipelago, there lives an Onix with a body that sparkles like transparent crystal. It's an incredibly rare variant."

Ash's heart skipped a beat. The Crystal Onix! He immediately recalled this unique encounter from the original story. It was an Onix that hadn't exactly reversed its attributes, but instead of fearing water, it was terrified of fire! This was a capture opportunity that couldn't be missed. His eyes burned with sudden intensity.

"It looks like we have a reason to meet this legendary Pokémon," Ash said, tucking the note away carefully with a confident smile. "Lapras, pick up the pace! We're heading to Sunburst Island!"

Following the direction the bottle had drifted and guided by Ash's fuzzy memories, they soon arrived at Sunburst Island, a place renowned for its exquisite glasswork. Glass sculptures and ornaments could be seen everywhere, glittering brilliantly under the sun.

While asking around, they quickly found the owners of the messagea young girl named Marissa and her older brother, Mateo. Mateo was a young glassblower who had found himself stuck in a creative slump.

"Do you... do you have news about the Crystal Onix?" Marissa asked excitedly the moment Ash showed her the note.

Mateo looked at them expectantly as well. "Our family has passed down the legend of the Crystal Onix for generations. They say it is extraordinarily beautiful, with a body like the purest crystal. I was hoping to see it with my own eyes to find the inspiration I need to break through my slump."

"That's exactly why we're here," Ash nodded. "We're looking for it too, and I believe it truly exists."

"Really? That's great!" Marissa cheered.

Hope rekindled in Mateo's eyes. "Thank you! However, we only know it's supposed to be in a cave somewhere near Sunburst Island. We just haven't been able to find the exact location."

Facing this hurdle, Tracey stepped forward and pushed up his hat with confidence. "In that case, it's time for my partner to take the stage! Come on out, Marill!"

The blue, mouse-like Marill bounced into the clearing, its iconic large ears twitching noticeably.

"Marill has incredibly sensitive hearing," Tracey explained. "It can hear the sound of distant flowing water, the resonance of rocks, and even the tiny vibrations made by Pokémon movements. If the Crystal Onix truly lives in a crystal cave, the sound waves its unique body creates will certainly differ from ordinary rock. Marill, please, listen for the most unique, clearest echo on this island!"

"Marill!" The Pokémon nodded and closed its eyes. Its large ears rotated like radar dishes, catching sound waves beyond human perception. It tilted its head, focused, and then led the group through the island's rugged paths and along the coastline.

After nearly an hour of searching, Marill stopped before a seemingly ordinary rock wall. Its ears twitched violently as it pointed excitedly behind the barrier. "Marill! Rill!"

"Is it in there?" Ash's Aura also sensed a cooling, crisp energy fluctuation coming from behind the wall, distinct from common stone.

Mateo stepped forward to inspect the wall and found a cave entrance cleverly hidden by thick vines. "I found it! There really is an entrance!"

The group pulled back the vines to reveal a deep tunnel that glowed with a faint, crystalline light. As they stepped inside, everyone was stunned. The cave walls were composed of massive crystals that refracted the sunlight peeking through the cracks, casting a dreamy, kaleidoscopic glow through the cavern.

In the widest part of the cave, a massive creature lay coiled. Its body was made entirely of transparent crystal, refracting the light into a dazzling display. Every "rock" segment looked like a meticulously carved diamondsturdy yet ethereal. It was the legendary Crystal Onix!

"It's so beautiful!" Misty couldn't help but gasp.

"The Crystal Onix... it's incredible!" Mateo stared at the perfect "artwork" before him, his body trembling with excitement as inspiration flooded his mind.

Sensing intruders, the Crystal Onix raised its massive head and let out a low roar that echoed through the cavea clear warning.

Ash observed it sharply, his mind racing through an analysis. Its body is crystal, which means its density and structure are different from normal rock. It likely has extreme resistance to physical impact, and...

Ash recalled a key piece of information. Water-type moves probably can't penetrate that smooth, cold surface, but high temperatures from fire could disrupt the crystalline structure through thermal expansion and contraction!

To verify his inspiration and connect with the legendary Pokémon, Mateo sent out his own partner. "Go, Charmeleon! Use Ember!"

Charmeleon spat out tiny sparks toward the Crystal Onix. To everyone's surprise, the sparks didn't bounce off. Instead, the points of impact turned a faint red, and the Crystal Onix let out a roar of genuine pain!

"I knew it! It really is afraid of Fire-type moves!" Ash confirmed his theory.

Mateo's confidence soared. "Charmeleon, let's go! Use Flamethrower!"

A searing pillar of fire blasted toward the Crystal Onix. The legendary Pokémon swung its tail in fury, using Rock Throw to hurl clusters of crystal at Charmeleon while its massive body charged forward to collide.

"Charmeleon, dodge it and use Metal Claw!"

Under Mateo's command, Charmeleon nimbly evaded the attack. Its claws, shimmering with a metallic sheen, scraped against the Crystal Onix's hide with a harsh screech, dealing significant damage.

The battle felt more like a clash of art and power. As Mateo directed Charmeleon, he watched every movement and every change in light refraction, the spark of inspiration in his eyes growing brighter by the second. Finally, Charmeleon landed a precise Fire Fang on the Onix's tail, dealing a finishing blow to the duel.

Mateo recalled his exhausted but spirited Charmeleon and bowed deeply to the Crystal Onix. "Thank you, Crystal Onix! I've found it! I've found that feeling of transparency and hardness, yet filled with a passion like fire! My glass art will surely be reborn!"

The Crystal Onix seemed to understand his gratitude and let out a low hum, its hostility fading.

At that moment, Ash stepped forward, looking at the Onix with a determined gaze. "Mateo, thanks for letting me watch that amazing battle. Now, I have a request of my own." He turned to the legendary creature. "Powerful Crystal Onix, battle me! I want you to be my partner and see the wider world with me!"

Mateo was surprised for a moment, but then he smiled in support. "I understand. You're the one who helped me find it, and you're a strong trainer. If you can catch it with your own strength, I have no objections. It deserves a grand adventure."

The Crystal Onix felt the powerful Aura and unwavering will radiating from Ash. It raised its head and let out a challenging roar, accepting the invitation!

"Excellent!" Ash's gaze sharpened as he pulled out a Poké Ball. He didn't choose a Fire-type to exploit its weakness; instead, he chose an opponent of equal stature. "I choose you, Giant Onix!"

In a flash of light, the oversized Onix Ash had captured at Mt. Hideaway appeared. Its massive frame was even a bit sturdier than the Crystal Onix. The two titans stared each other down in the shimmering cavern, the pressure in the air turning heavy.

"Giant Onix, use Rock Throw!"

The Crystal Onix countered with its own Rock Throw. Both Pokémon manipulated rocksor in one case, crystalscausing them to collide and shatter mid-air like a storm of stone.

"Giant Onix, charge in and use Bind!"

Using its slightly "smaller" size and smooth surface, the Crystal Onix nimbly avoided the grapple. In the next second, its tail shimmered with a metallic glow as it slammed into the Giant Onix with a thunderous boom.

"Good! Giant Onix, steady yourself! Use Smack Down!"

The Giant Onix roared, gathering its strength to hurl a massive boulder that struck the Crystal Onix just as it tried to use Iron Tail again, knocking it off balance.

"Now! While it's staggered, use Earthquake!"

The Giant Onix stomped its heavy body onto the ground, causing the entire crystal cave to shudder violently. Ground-type moves were super effective against the Rock-type Crystal Onix. It let out a pained cry as fine cracks began to appear on its crystalline hide.

"One last hit! Double-Edge!"

The Giant Onix gathered all its power, charging forward like a runaway heavy truck. It slammed into the Crystal Onix before it could recover from the tremors.

BOOM!!!

The collision echoed like a thunderclap. The Crystal Onix was sent flying, smashing into the crystal wall behind it before sliding down, finally losing the ability to battle.

Ash took out an empty Poké Ball and threw it decisively. The ball wobbled three times before emitting a sharp click.

The capture was a success!

Ash walked over, picked up the Poké Ball, and whispered, "Welcome to the team, Crystal Onix!"

Mateo and Marissa came over to offer their heartfelt congratulations. Mateo sighed emotionally. "Thank you, Ash. Not only did you help me find my inspiration, but you gave the Crystal Onix a better home. I believe it will shine even brighter in your care."

With a new partner and a wealth of rewards, Ash and his friends said their goodbyes and left the beautiful crystal cave. Their adventure in the Orange Islands continued, with the next Gym waiting for them.
