The blue light faded.
For a moment the clearing was silent except for the ringing in Kael's ears.
Then everything moved at once.
"RUN!" Valen's voice cut through the chaos like a blade.
The Crimson Ash warriors didn't hesitate. They broke away from the stunned hunters and sprinted toward the edge of the clearing.
Mira grabbed Kael's sleeve and yanked him forward.
"Move!"
Kael didn't argue.
He ran.
Branches whipped past them as they plunged back into the dark forest. The glowing blue mushrooms blurred beneath their feet as the group rushed downhill through tangled roots and moss-covered stone.
Behind them—
The guardian roared.
The sound shook the forest like distant thunder.
Kael glanced over his shoulder.
The giant stone construct still stood in the ruins, glowing with fierce blue energy. Hunters swarmed around it like ants attacking a fortress.
And the guardian was fighting them all.
A massive arm swung.
Stone and steel collided.
Two hunters were thrown across the clearing.
But more were climbing the shattered ruins, slashing glowing blades against the ancient construct's body.
Cracks spread across the guardian's chest.
Kael felt something twist in his stomach.
"He's buying us time."
Mira pulled him harder.
"Don't stop!"
They burst through a thick wall of ferns and finally reached the forest road.
Their horses were still there, restless and snorting nervously.
Valen vaulted into his saddle in one smooth motion.
"Mount up!"
Kael scrambled onto his horse with far less grace.
"Go go go go!"
The Crimson Ash riders turned their horses and thundered down the dark road.
The forest rushed past them in streaks of shadow and blue light.
For several minutes no one spoke.
Only the pounding of hooves echoed through the Whispering Forest.
Kael's heart was still racing.
He clutched the pendant tightly in his hand.
It was glowing brighter than ever.
Almost hot now.
Mira noticed.
"It's still reacting."
Kael held it up.
The red leaf pulsed like a heartbeat.
"Yeah… that can't be good."
Valen rode slightly ahead of the group, his sharp gaze scanning the forest.
"We cannot stop."
One of the warriors asked quietly, "How far?"
"Until sunrise."
Kael groaned.
"Fantastic."
They continued deeper into the forest road, weaving through ancient trees that loomed like silent giants.
For a while the only sound was the wind through the branches.
Then Kael heard something.
Faint.
Distant.
But unmistakable.
Hooves.
More hooves.
Fast.
Behind them.
"Oh no."
Mira glanced back.
Dark shapes were weaving between the trees.
Hunters.
They were catching up.
Kael sighed dramatically.
"Why does this always happen?"
Valen looked back once.
His expression hardened.
"They have shadow mounts."
Kael blinked.
"I'm afraid to ask."
"They do not tire."
Kael slumped slightly in his saddle.
"Great. Of course they don't."
The hunters closed the distance quickly.
Their black cloaks fluttered like wings behind them.
One of them raised an arm.
Dark energy flared.
A bolt of black light shot through the trees.
It slammed into the road ahead of the riders and exploded.
Kael's horse reared.
"WHOA!"
Valen shouted, "Spread out!"
The Crimson Ash riders split apart, racing through the forest in a wide formation.
More energy bolts flashed through the trees.
One struck a nearby trunk.
The ancient tree shattered.
Wood exploded across the path.
Kael ducked.
"Okay! Definitely trying to kill us!"
Mira leaned low over her horse.
"Stay moving!"
Another rider pulled beside them.
The scarred warrior from earlier.
"They are faster than us."
Kael didn't like that sentence.
"What's the plan then?!"
The warrior glanced toward Valen.
"Trust the commander."
Kael turned his head.
Valen had slowed his horse slightly.
Which seemed like the opposite of what they should be doing.
Kael shouted, "Uh! Shouldn't we be going faster?!"
Valen suddenly raised his hand.
"Now!"
Three Crimson Ash warriors turned their horses sharply and rode directly toward the approaching hunters.
Kael's eyes widened.
"They're going the wrong way!"
Mira shook her head.
"No."
The warriors drew small metal spheres from their belts.
They hurled them toward the road behind them.
The spheres struck the ground—
And exploded in brilliant orange light.
Fire erupted across the forest path.
A blazing wall of flames roared upward between the riders and the hunters.
The sudden heat rushed across Kael's face.
He blinked.
"…Okay that was cool."
Valen didn't slow.
"Keep riding!"
The fire spread quickly across fallen leaves and dry branches.
For a moment it looked like the forest itself had ignited.
Behind the flames the hunters' mounts skidded to a halt.
Kael risked another glance back.
The fire had forced them to stop.
For now.
He exhaled slowly.
"That bought us some time."
Valen nodded once.
"But not enough."
They continued riding for another hour.
The forest gradually began to change.
The glowing mushrooms became less frequent.
The trees grew thinner.
The heavy silence of the Whispering Forest slowly faded.
Finally Valen raised his hand again.
The riders slowed.
Kael's horse gratefully came to a stop.
He slumped slightly in the saddle.
"I vote we never do that again."
Mira slid off her horse.
"You're the one who activated the ancient ruin."
Kael pointed at the pendant.
"I didn't know it would wake up a rock titan!"
Valen dismounted and walked toward them.
His expression was calm.
But thoughtful.
"The guardian was real."
Kael blinked.
"What did you think it was? A decoration?"
Valen ignored the comment.
"The legends say constructs like that guarded the seals during the War of Embers."
Mira frowned.
"So the sigils are real."
"Yes."
Kael looked down at the glowing pendant again.
"So… I'm carrying one of the keys that lock up world-ending evil."
Valen nodded.
"Correct."
Kael sighed.
"Fantastic."
The scarred warrior approached.
"Commander."
Valen turned.
"Report."
"We lost two riders during the escape."
Silence fell.
Kael felt a knot tighten in his chest.
Valen nodded slowly.
"They knew the risk."
The warrior continued.
"The hunters will follow."
Valen's gaze shifted toward the distant mountains.
"I know."
Kael noticed the direction.
The same direction the guardian had pointed earlier.
"Those gates you mentioned… they're in the mountains, right?"
Valen didn't answer immediately.
Then he said quietly,
"Yes."
Kael rubbed his face again.
"Please tell me we're not going there."
Valen looked at him.
"We are."
Kael stared.
"Of course we are."
Mira crossed her arms.
"If the hunters want the sigils, they'll eventually head there too."
Valen nodded.
"We must reach the other sigils first."
Kael blinked.
"Wait."
He pointed at the pendant.
"You said there were seven."
"Yes."
"So we're collecting them now?!"
Valen's expression didn't change.
"Yes."
Kael stared at the sky.
"I really miss my normal life."
Mira smirked.
"You were a farmer."
"It was peaceful!"
Valen turned toward the horses.
"We ride at dawn."
Kael groaned.
"Again?!"
Valen mounted his horse.
"The hunters will not stop."
Kael glanced down at the glowing pendant.
It pulsed softly in his hand.
Like it was alive.
Or listening.
Then—
The guardian's voice echoed faintly in his mind again.
The sigil has chosen you.
Kael swallowed.
He didn't know why.
But that sentence felt heavier every time he heard it.
Mira noticed his expression.
"What's wrong?"
Kael hesitated.
Then said quietly,
"The guardian said the sigil chose me."
She shrugged.
"Maybe it did."
"That doesn't make sense."
"Magic rarely does."
Kael sighed.
"Great."
The group prepared to move again.
But deep in the mountains far away—
Inside the dark fortress—
The robed figure stood before the burning crystal.
The crystal now blazed with violent crimson light.
Shadows moved behind him.
"The hunters have engaged the bearers."
The robed figure smiled slowly.
"Good."
Another voice spoke from the darkness.
"The Fireleaf Sigil has awakened."
"Yes."
The man turned toward the glowing crystal.
"And soon… the others will follow."
His glowing eyes reflected in the crystal's surface.
"When all seven sigils are gathered…"
He placed a hand on the burning stone.
"The gates will open."
The chamber trembled.
Far away—
Kael's pendant pulsed again.
And the long hunt had only just begun.
