Chapter 5 - THE GALAXY'S MOST WANTED

KIERA'S POV

The first blaster bolt comes from a man in a gray coat standing across the street. He sees her face on the billboard. Recognition flashes across his features. Then greed. He pulls his weapon and fires without hesitation.

The bolt sizzles past Kiera's head close enough that she feels the heat. She grabs Dante's arm and they run.

The warehouse alley is chaos now. More people are pulling weapons. Not organized. Not trained. Just desperate people who see one trillion credits standing in front of them. That's enough credits to buy a planet. Enough to change someone's life forever. Enough to make a regular person forget about mercy.

Kiera's entire life is visible on every screen in the city and it's destroying her.

The woman in the stolen security uniform recognizes her. So does the maintenance worker loading cargo onto a transport ship. So does the street vendor who sells counterfeit identification chips. Everyone is staring. Everyone is pointing. Everyone is reaching for their communicators or their weapons.

Her identity as the Phantom is gone. The secret she kept for five years. The careful anonymity that kept her alive. The invisibility that made her untouchable. All of it burned away in a single broadcast.

Dante pulls her down an alley. His hand never leaves hers. The bond between them hums with urgency. She can feel his focus through the connection. Feel his determination to keep them both alive. Feel his understanding that they have maybe minutes before the crowds get organized.

Before someone actually hits them.

"The docks," Dante says between breaths. "We need to get to the docks and steal a ship."

"Everyone will be looking for us there," Kiera says. But she's already running toward the docks with him. She doesn't have another choice. The bond won't let her run any other direction.

They weave through the neon-soaked streets of Aurion Prime. The city is waking up to the news. Shop owners are locking their doors. Security personnel are scanning crowds. Police drones are beginning their sweeps of the districts. The entire planet is becoming a hunting ground.

And Kiera is the prey.

She thinks about Zara as she runs. About the crime boss who trained her. Who fed her. Who gave her purpose. Zara sent her to steal the Heartstone knowing it was a trap. Knowing the mission was designed to kill her. The realization burns hotter than any blaster bolt.

Five years. Five years of loyalty and blood and impossible jobs and Zara was willing to throw her away like garbage.

The dock stretches ahead of them. Ships of every size and age are docked in their bays. Cargo transports. Passenger vessels. Military cruisers that shouldn't be here but probably are because someone's palms got greased. Dante pulls Kiera toward a medium-sized cargo ship with its loading ramp down.

Someone is shouting behind them. Multiple someones. Feet are thundering across the dock. More weapons are coming. Kiera doesn't look back. Looking back wastes time.

Dante drags her up the loading ramp. The cargo hold smells like recycled air and stale water. Crates are stacked everywhere. Some are marked with imperial seals. Others are unmarked. The ship's interior is dim and cramped but it's sanctuary.

"Engineering!" Dante shouts.

He knows where the controls are. Of course he does. The Shadow Wolf probably knows the layout of a thousand ships. Kiera follows him through the cargo hold, around corners, down narrow corridors. The bond hums between them. Her panic feeds into his focus. His determination feeds into her strength.

Behind them, someone starts shooting.

The cargo hold erupts in chaos. Blaster fire tears through metal crates. Supplies explode. The smell of burning plastic and metal fills the air. Kiera and Dante reach the engineering section and Dante's fingers fly over the controls. The engines rumble to life. Not a gentle startup. Emergency ignition. Full power immediately.

Alarms scream through the ship.

The docking clamps release. The ship shudders as it tears free from the dock. Through the viewport, Kiera sees the city falling away. Aurion Prime getting smaller. The place where her old life just died.

Dante pushes the ship into a climb that would be illegal if anyone cared about laws right now. They punch through the atmosphere and suddenly the blackness of space is all around them. Stars stretch in every direction. The planet is a blue and green marble below them.

"Hyperspace," Kiera gasps.

Dante's hands move across the navigation console. Jump coordinates lock in. The ship's engines scream as he pushes them toward their limit. Space distorts ahead of them. The tunnel of light that means escape. That means they might actually survive this night.

The ship jumps to hyperspace.

For a moment, everything is silent. Everything is still. Kiera and Dante stand in the engineering section of a stolen cargo ship, breathing hard, covered in dust and fear and something that might be adrenaline or might be the bond burning between them.

Then Kiera's communicator buzzes.

She pulls it out slowly. She doesn't recognize the frequency. She doesn't recognize the encryption. But she recognizes the face that fills the screen immediately.

Crimson hair. Pale skin. Eyes like chips of ice. Zara Vex smiles at her like a predator that just caught its prey.

"Hello, darling," Zara says. Her voice is smooth. Sweet. Poison. "We need to talk about your failure."

Kiera's throat goes dry.

"The mission was a setup," Kiera says flatly. "You sent me to die."

"Of course I did," Zara replies like Kiera just complimented her outfit. "Your debt was becoming tiresome. I expected you to die cleanly on the museum floor. The artifact would have been easy to retrieve from your body." Zara leans closer to the screen. Her smile turns sharper. "Instead, you bonded with someone and made yourself valuable again. How unexpected."

Dante steps into view of the communicator. His gold eyes are burning.

"Who are you?" Zara asks. "Some street thief Kiera dragged along?"

"Dante Corsair," he says quietly.

Zara's expression shifts. Just for a moment. Just enough for Kiera to see real anger flash across her face. But then the smile returns and it's worse than before because now it's mixed with something cold.

"The Shadow Wolf. How delightful. I've heard stories about you too." Zara studies them both like she's deciding where to cut first. "Well, you've both made quite the mess. The Empire is looking for you. The bounty hunters are mobilizing. And now you've cost me the artifact."

"The Heartstone is mine," Kiera says. She holds up her hand and the Heartstone flares with blue light. "And I'm not paying your debt anymore."

The silence that follows is sharp. Dangerous. Kiera can feel Dante's shock through the bond. She can feel his fear that she's just made a terrible mistake. But she had to say it. Had to claim something in her life as her own.

Zara's smile never wavers.

"Oh, Kiera," she says softly. "That was your mistake. That was the moment you stopped being someone I trained and became someone I'm going to hunt." Zara sits back in her chair. She looks relaxed. Confident. Like she just won something important. "Bring me the Heartstone and I will pay your debt. Refuse, and I will hunt you across every system until you beg me to kill you."

The transmission cuts.

The screen goes black.

Dante reaches out and takes Kiera's hand. The one with the glowing Heartstone embedded in her palm. His fingers intertwine with hers and the bond stops burning and starts humming instead. Something almost peaceful underneath the terror.

"We're hunted by the Empire and the Vex Syndicate," Kiera says. Her voice sounds hollow. "We're bonded by an alien artifact we don't understand. And I just declared war on the woman who owns half the criminal underworld."

"Yes," Dante says simply.

"We're going to die," Kiera whispers.

Dante pulls her closer. The bond hums warm between them. For the first time since the Heartstone activated, she lets herself lean into him. Lets herself accept that maybe being alone isn't her only option anymore.

"Maybe," Dante says. "But we'll die together."

Outside the window, hyperspace stretches in every direction. Behind them, the Empire mobilizes its forces. Around them, bounty hunters pick up their weapons. And somewhere in the darkness, Zara Vex is probably already planning their execution.

Kiera looks at the man holding her hand and realizes she has no idea what comes next.

But for the first time in five years, she's not facing it alone.
