Candice's POV
The king's eyes narrowed slowly. He looked at Greta with the quiet attention of a man who had been watching someone for a long time and had learned to read them well.
"What exactly are you driving at, Greta," he said. "Are you truly that jealous of a mere aide that you would start devising plans."
Greta's composure cracked. She stood up from her seat in one sharp movement, her hands pressing flat against the front of her dress. "I cannot believe you just said that," she said. "Jealous of Sairis. Me!"
The king shrugged. The movement was small and entirely unbothered. "If you are not jealous," he said, "then explain to me what you are doing. You brought Lady Candice here without my request. I did not summon her. I did not ask for company. And now you are sitting here making comments about Sairis."
He looked at her. "What is the purpose of all of this."
