Chapter 10 - Chapter 10 – The Night of the Raid

The village slept beneath a pale, watchful moon. Lanterns swayed gently, and the wind whispered through the streets, carrying a chill that felt unnatural.

Kael and Lucien had spent the day refining their abilities, practicing control and teamwork. But unease clung to them like fog, a quiet premonition neither could ignore.

A scream shattered the night. Windows splintered, lanterns crashed to the ground, and shadows twisted unnaturally as rogue Weavers poured into the village. Their Aether flames, wind, and shards of ice ripped through the silence with deadly precision.

Lucien's Family in Danger

Lucien's instincts flared. With a quick gesture, he formed his Aether sword, the blade shimmering faintly with raw energy. "Kael! Over here!" he shouted, dashing toward the center of the village.

Kael followed, fragments of Aether coalescing around his hands, spinning defensively as he scanned for threats. "Stay close. Watch for civilians. We cannot get separated."

They arrived at the square, where Lucien's parents and older siblings were in the midst of battle. His father hurled bursts of fire and wind to protect villagers. His mother and siblings worked to shield others, their Aether controlled but strained.

One rogue Weaver, faster and deadlier than the others, lunged directly at Lucien's family. Flames twisted with icy shards, catching them off guard.

Lucien's father and eldest brother were thrown violently against a wall. Flames engulfed them before Lucien could reach them. His mother and sister charged to intercept, but the rogue Weaver's attacks were precise, lethal. In moments, his parents and siblings lay still, their lives cut short in the chaos.

Lucien's chest burned as he slashed with his Aether sword at the rogue, sparks scattering as fire and ice collided against his blade. One strike grazed him, leaving a burn scar across his chest. He froze for a heartbeat, grief and rage surging.

Kael's fragments formed a spinning barrier, protecting them from debris and stray attacks. "Focus! We end this rogue first!" he barked.

Tracking the Rogue Weaver

The rogue Weaver melted into the shadows after the attack, leaving devastation in its wake. Kael and Lucien pursued it through twisted alleys and over debris-strewn streets, following the residual Aether it left behind.

Every step was tense; every sound could be another attack. Finally, they cornered the rogue Weaver preparing to strike another home. Her elemental Aether flared violently, a mixture of fire and shards of ice, her presence deadly and precise.

Lucien summoned his Aether sword fully, its pale blue blade humming in anticipation. Kael's fragments spun around him, sharp and ready, forming a web of defense.

Kael's grey eyes were calm, assessing every angle. "Watch my movements. I'll control the battlefield. Strike when I open an opportunity."

The rogue Weaver lunged first, ice shards and fire slashing through the air. Kael twisted his fragments, deflecting the incoming attacks while maintaining a protective dome around both of them.

Lucien charged from the side, swinging his Aether sword, deflecting shards and cutting through small flames. The rogue Weaver twisted and retaliated with a wave of fire, grazing Lucien's chest and reopening the burn scar. Pain flared, but he kept pressing forward.

Kael's fragments swirled faster, pinning the rogue's limbs and controlling its space. Sparks flew as elemental Aether clashed with Kael's precision, fragments deflecting ice shards and redirecting flames toward open ground.

Lucien lunged with a coordinated strike as Kael shifted fragments to expose the rogue's weak flank. His sword slashed through, slicing into her side, while Kael's fragments pinned her from above. The rogue Weaver screamed, staggering backward.

One final, combined strike—Lucien plunging his blade as Kael's fragments cut from above—brought the rogue Weaver down. She collapsed into a crater of scorched earth, defeated.

Both boys were bruised and bloodied. Kael's fragments flickered weakly, and his shoulder throbbed painfully. Lucien clutched his chest, the burn scar a searing reminder of his failure to protect his family.

The streets were littered with debris and smoke. Villagers cowered, homes were damaged, and the echoes of screams filled the night.

Kael led Lucien toward his cottage at the edge of the village. The door was ajar, smoke curling gently. Kael's fragments flared defensively as they entered.

And then he saw her.

Amara, his mother, lay on the floor, blood pooling beneath her. Her hand reached out slightly, eyes wide, filled with shock and love.

Kael rushed to her side, kneeling, fragments flickering weakly around them. "Mother… no…"

Lucien stayed close, gripping his Aether sword, scanning the streets for any remaining threat.

Kael pressed a trembling hand to Amara's chest. "It's too late, I failed you."

The night hung heavy with grief. The calm had vanished. The village was scorched, screams echoed, and lives had been lost.

Kael's grey eyes hardened, fragments swirling faintly in his fury and sorrow. "We will not fail again. Not anyone else. Not ever."

Lucien placed a hand on Kael's shoulder. "Then we begin. Together."

The wind rustled through the ruined village, carrying the faintest echoes of what was to come.
