Chapter 74 - Chapter 74 – The Promise Beyond Time

Chapter 74 – The Promise Beyond Time

The Memory Field had changed.

Evetyl noticed it before she understood it.

The endless white flowers that had surrounded her moments ago were no longer silent.

They moved with the wind.

A real wind.

Not the empty movement of an artificial place.

A gentle breeze flowed through the field, carrying the scent of flowers and something else...

Something familiar.

Something she couldn't name.

The enormous tree above them continued to bloom.

Every branch that had been empty for countless ages now carried glowing leaves.

The child stared upward.

For the first time since Evetyl had met it...

It looked happy.

Not pretending.

Not forcing a smile.

Actually happy.

"It's beautiful."

The child's voice was barely a whisper.

Evetyl looked at the tree.

"Was it always like this?"

The child shook its head.

"No."

"It used to be."

A small smile appeared.

"Before everyone left."

Evetyl looked at the child carefully.

"Who left?"

The child didn't answer immediately.

Instead, it walked toward the tree and placed a small hand against the trunk.

"The first memories."

"The ones that became everything."

Evetyl followed slowly.

"You mean..."

"The first worlds?"

The child nodded.

"They were not created like people think."

"It wasn't someone building them."

"It wasn't someone drawing a map and deciding where everything should go."

The child looked at the glowing leaves.

"They were dreams."

"Dreams?"

"Yes."

"Every possibility was a dream."

"Every dream became a memory."

"And every memory became a world."

Evetyl remained quiet.

The idea was impossible.

Yet somehow...

It felt right.

---

Outside the Memory Field...

Kai watched Evetyl standing beneath the white tree.

She hadn't moved for several minutes.

His worry grew.

"How long has it been?"

The traveler looked at the sky.

"Inside?"

"Time doesn't work normally there."

Kai frowned.

"That isn't an answer."

The traveler smiled slightly.

"Because there isn't a normal answer."

Kai crossed his arms.

"You're really annoying."

"I've been told."

"By me?"

The traveler laughed softly.

"No."

"By someone who knew you much better."

Kai looked at him.

"Future me?"

The traveler became quiet.

That silence was enough.

Kai's expression changed.

"You really know him."

The traveler looked away.

"Yes."

"Is he okay?"

A pause.

Then...

"Sometimes."

Kai looked down.

That answer hurt more than he expected.

---

Evetyl continued walking with the child.

The Memory Field was changing around them.

The empty white landscape was slowly becoming something different.

Small hills appeared.

Streams of clear water flowed through the flowers.

Tiny lights flew through the air.

The place was becoming alive.

"You are doing this."

Evetyl suddenly said.

The child looked confused.

"What?"

"Your memories."

"The place is changing because you're remembering."

The child looked around.

Then smiled.

"Maybe."

A moment later...

Its smile faded.

"But remembering hurts."

Evetyl understood.

"Why?"

The child looked toward the horizon.

"Because when you remember something beautiful..."

"You also remember losing it."

---

The child walked farther until they reached a small hill.

At the top stood a single stone.

On the stone were countless names.

Some were bright.

Some were faded.

Some were almost impossible to see.

Evetyl touched one of them.

The moment her fingers touched the stone...

A memory appeared.

A world.

A small village surrounded by green fields.

People laughing.

A family celebrating.

Then...

Darkness.

The village disappeared.

The memory ended.

Evetyl pulled her hand back.

"What happened?"

The child looked sad.

"That world was forgotten."

"By everyone?"

"Yes."

"Even the people who lived there?"

The child nodded.

"When their world ended..."

"Their memories became too painful."

"So they slowly let go."

Evetyl looked at the names.

"Then why are you still remembering them?"

The child smiled.

"Because someone should."

---

The answer stayed with her.

Because someone should.

Those words felt important.

Like something she had believed long ago.

---

Back in Crosshaven...

The situation was becoming worse.

The white doorway had expanded.

Not enough to consume the city.

But enough that everyone could feel something beyond it.

Something waiting.

The Curator stared at the entrance.

"The door isn't opening."

Noah looked at him.

"Then what is it doing?"

The Curator tightened his grip around the golden key.

"It is waiting."

"For what?"

The Curator looked toward Evetyl.

"For the person who can open it."

---

The First Thing stood silently beside the Eye.

"You knew there was something beneath Crosshaven."

The Eye looked away.

"I suspected."

"Yet you never told us."

"I had no proof."

The First Thing remained silent.

Then:

"Or you were afraid."

The Eye didn't answer.

That was answer enough.

---

The former Outer King approached them.

"This changes everything."

The First Thing looked at him.

"Explain."

"If the Last Memory truly existed before creation..."

He looked toward the doorway.

"Then whoever controls it..."

"Could influence every world."

The Eye nodded.

"Which means there will be those who seek it."

As if summoned by those words...

The sky above Crosshaven darkened.

Not with clouds.

With shadows.

Everyone looked upward.

The traveler from the future immediately became serious.

"No."

Kai noticed.

"You know that?"

The traveler didn't respond.

"Kai."

His voice became urgent.

"Get everyone away from the doorway."

Kai stared.

"Why?"

The traveler looked at the sky.

"Because something followed me."

---

The darkness above Crosshaven began forming shapes.

Not creatures.

Not armies.

Something worse.

Memories.

Thousands of broken memories.

Lost moments.

Forgotten places.

All moving together.

The First Thought looked terrified.

"They're not attacking."

Everyone turned.

"Then what are they doing?"

The First Thought slowly answered.

"They're returning."

---

The Forgotten One appeared in the plaza.

Its expression was filled with fear.

"The seal..."

"It is breaking."

The Curator looked at it.

"What seal?"

The Forgotten One looked at everyone.

"The seal that separated forgotten memories from reality."

Silence.

Kai understood.

"You're saying..."

"All forgotten things are coming back?"

The Forgotten One nodded.

"Yes."

---

The sky cracked.

A memory fell from above.

It landed in the street.

For a moment...

Everyone saw a city that had vanished thousands of years ago.

People walked through the streets.

Children played.

Then the image faded.

Leaving behind nothing.

Except sadness.

More memories began falling.

Millions.

---

Inside the Memory Field...

The child suddenly looked upward.

Something had changed.

"Evetyl."

"What?"

The child's expression became worried.

"They're coming."

"Who?"

"The forgotten ones."

Evetyl looked around.

The peaceful field began shaking.

Dark cracks appeared across the white sky.

The child grabbed her hand.

"We have to go."

"Where?"

The child looked toward the only doorway.

The doorway leading back to reality.

But before they could move...

A voice echoed.

A voice that did not belong to the child.

A voice older than worlds.

"Do not take her."

Evetyl froze.

The child turned pale.

"No..."

The flowers around them began withering.

The tree's leaves stopped glowing.

From beyond the horizon...

Something was approaching.

Not a monster.

Not a god.

A memory.

A forgotten memory that had waited too long.

The child stepped in front of Evetyl.

"You can't have her."

The voice answered calmly.

"She was ours first."

Evetyl felt a chill.

"What does that mean?"

The child looked back at her.

Its eyes filled with fear.

"Evetyl..."

"What?"

The child whispered:

"You weren't the first person who promised to find me."

A pause.

"You were the last."

The ground beneath them cracked.

And from the darkness beyond the white horizon...

The first forgotten memory appeared.
