Chapter 29 - Chapter 29 – The Voice That Stayed

The silence didn't leave Luna even after she stepped out of the hospital. The cool night air brushed against her skin, but it did nothing to calm the storm inside her. Something had changed.

Earlier, it was confusion—unclear memories, broken fragments, unanswered questions. But now, it felt different. Now, it had a presence. A voice.

Something she couldn't ignore anymore.

She walked ahead slowly, her steps steady but distant, as if she wasn't fully aware of where she was going. Behind her, Ethan followed at a quiet distance. He didn't try to stop her this time, didn't try to guide her or control the situation. He understood that forcing her now would only make things worse. Luna wasn't just trying to understand anymore—she was confronting something much deeper.

After a few moments, Ethan finally spoke. "Do you still hear it?"

Luna didn't turn. Her eyes stayed forward, but her fingers tightened slightly at her sides. "…Yes," she answered softly.

That one word was enough to shift the tension again.

Ethan's gaze sharpened as he stepped a little closer. "What is it saying?"

Luna hesitated. It wasn't easy to explain, because it didn't feel like a memory anymore. It felt present. Alive. Like something was still there, watching her, waiting for the right moment to speak again. "It's not clear," she said slowly. "But it's there… like it's trying to say something."

Ethan studied her carefully before asking, "Trying… or controlling?"

That question made her stop.

She turned toward him, her expression no longer just confused. There was fear now, deeper and more real than before. "I don't know," she admitted. And that uncertainty was more terrifying than anything else.

Silence stretched between them again, heavy and uncomfortable.

Luna looked down at her hands, slowly flexing her fingers as if testing whether they truly belonged to her. "…They don't feel like mine sometimes," she whispered.

Ethan's expression darkened. "What do you mean?"

She swallowed, trying to find the right words. "It feels like I'm watching them move… instead of controlling them."

That wasn't just fear. That was something else entirely.

Ethan stepped closer immediately, his voice firmer now. "Luna."

She looked up at him, and for a brief second, something in her eyes felt unfamiliar—like a flicker of someone else. But it disappeared just as quickly.

"I'm fine," she said quickly.

Too quickly.

Ethan didn't accept that. "Say that again."

She frowned slightly, confused. "What?"

"That you're fine."

The silence that followed was different this time. It wasn't tense—it was revealing.

Luna opened her mouth to repeat it, but no words came out. Because she couldn't lie. Not now. Not anymore.

Her chest tightened as she exhaled slowly. "…I don't feel fine."

That honesty broke whatever fragile control she was holding onto.

Ethan exhaled quietly, his tone softening just slightly. "Then we deal with it step by step."

Luna looked at him, her eyes searching. "How?"

For the first time, Ethan didn't have an immediate answer. And that hesitation didn't go unnoticed. But standing still wasn't an option anymore.

"We figure out what that voice is," he said finally. "Whether it's your memory… or something else."

Luna's gaze dropped again. "…And if it's not just memory?"

Ethan didn't hesitate this time. "Then we stop it."

Simple words. But heavy.

Luna let out a weak breath, almost like a laugh. "You say things like it's easy."

"It doesn't have to be easy," he replied calmly. "It just has to be done."

They stood there under the dim streetlight, the silence stretching between them once again. But this time, it wasn't empty—it was filled with something fragile.

Then suddenly—

Luna flinched.

Her body stiffened, her breath catching mid-air.

Ethan noticed instantly. "What is it?"

She didn't respond. Because she heard it again.

Clearer.

Closer.

Don't trust him.

Her eyes widened slightly. "…Did you say something?" she asked, her voice barely steady.

Ethan frowned. "No."

But the voice didn't stop.

He's lying.

Luna's breathing became uneven, her heartbeat rising uncontrollably. "No…" she whispered under her breath.

Ethan stepped closer, his voice more urgent now. "Luna, what's happening?"

She shook her head, stepping back instinctively as if trying to escape something no one else could see. "I heard it again…"

"What did it say?"

Luna looked at him, her expression filled with conflict, fear, and something she didn't want to admit.

"…It told me not to trust you."

That one line changed everything.

The air between them turned sharp, almost cold.

Ethan didn't react immediately, but something in his expression hardened. "Do you believe it?" he asked.

The question was too direct.

Too real.

Luna hesitated, because the truth wasn't simple anymore. "I don't know," she said honestly.

And that answer was worse than anything else.

Silence fell again, heavier than before.

Ethan looked at her for a long moment, his thoughts unreadable. "…That voice isn't you," he said finally.

Luna frowned slightly. "Then what is it?"

Ethan's tone dropped, more serious now. "…

Something that doesn't want you to remember the truth."

That possibility settled between them, unsettling in its own way.

Because now, there were only two options.

Either the voice was a part of her…

Or something else was controlling her.

And neither felt safe.

Luna wrapped her arms around herself again, her voice barely a whisper. "I don't know which is worse."

Ethan didn't answer.

Because neither of them knew the truth anymore.

And for the first time—

That uncertainty felt more dangerous than anything else.
