Marcus Osei submitted his proposal to Chiron on the first Saturday of September, in a meeting at the Big House library that Kael attended as support rather than primary advocate.
This distinction mattered. The Hecate cabin proposal had been his — he had written it, argued it, sustained it across five years. The Egyptian tradition proposal needed to be Marcus's in the same fundamental way, not because Kael's support was unimportant but because the structural argument for recognizing a non-Greek divine tradition at a Greek-organized camp had to come from someone who stood in that tradition. A Greek-adjacent demigod making the argument was not the same thing as an Egyptian legacy making it.
Marcus had understood this without being told. Over the past year he had developed the specific quality that people developed when they engaged with their divine heritage honestly: a combination of deepened authority about their own experience and a clearer understanding of how that experience intersected with structures that had not been built for it.
The proposal was twenty-two pages. It was, Kael thought, better than his own five-year-old five-page proposal — better argued, more thoroughly documented, more specific in its structural recommendations. It also had a quality his proposal had not had: it was written from the inside of the experience rather than from the outside looking in.
Chiron read it over the course of the meeting, which was not his usual practice — he usually asked for documents in advance — but Marcus had brought it in person and Chiron had chosen to read it in front of them, which was itself a form of respect.
When he finished, he was quiet for a long time.
'You propose,' Chiron said finally, 'not a cabin for Egyptian demigods specifically, but a framework structure — a wing of the camp that could accommodate divine bloodlines from any tradition that doesn't currently have a formal presence here.'
'A tradition house,' Marcus said. 'Not twelve more cabins, each for a single god. A shared space for traditions that are represented by individuals rather than populations — where someone from the Egyptian tradition and someone from the Norse tradition and someone from the Aztec tradition can have a formal home at camp without requiring a full cabin's worth of people from their specific tradition.'
'This is considerably more ambitious than a single cabin,' Chiron said.
'Yes,' Marcus said. 'Because the single cabin problem is going to keep occurring. There are children from every divine tradition in this country, and they are increasingly coming to this camp because it's the only structure they know about. A single-cabin solution for each tradition that comes to our attention is not sustainable. A framework is.'
Chiron looked at the proposal. He looked at Marcus. He looked at Kael.
'You didn't write this,' he said to Kael.
'No,' Kael said. 'He did.'
'I know the shape of your arguments,' Chiron said. 'This is not your shape. This is more architecturally ambitious.' A pause. 'It's better.'
Kael thought: yes. That is exactly right. He thought: this is what it looks like when the person closest to the problem solves it. I saw the gap and named it. Marcus lived it and built the solution.
'I will take this to Olympus,' Chiron said. 'I cannot promise timeline. I can tell you that the argument is sound and I will advocate for it.'
'That is what I asked for,' Marcus said. 'I have time.'
'You have more patience than most people I've trained,' Chiron said.
'Kael told me,' Marcus said, 'that the structural work takes years and that patience is the primary tool. He was very clear about this.'
Chiron looked at Kael with that expression again — the one containing something close to amusement. 'Yes,' he said. 'He tends to be.'
