Chapter 18 - Hellspawn Dawn

The backyard of Nevergreen Terrace turned into a battlefield the instant the portal tore open. Black, jagged edges ripped the night apart like torn fabric. Hellspawn poured through — not just shadows, but living nightmares: twisted humanoid shapes with too many limbs, skin like cracked obsidian that swallowed light, glowing crimson eyes that burned with hunger, claws that scraped concrete and left smoking gouges behind. The temperature plunged — breath fogging in sudden, unnatural cold. Low, guttural snarls layered with a sound like tearing metal filled the air, vibrating through the ground and into bones.

Medb rose from her knees, silver chains from the chalice still wrapped around her wrists and ankles. She laughed — sharp, triumphant, voice echoing unnaturally across the yard, carrying an edge of madness.

"You think truth binds me?" she hissed. "Truth is just another weapon. And I have better ones."

She twisted her hands. The chains shattered — silver fragments dissolving into mist that swirled around her like angry ghosts. Black water surged from the ground around her — thick, oily, laced with shadow — lashing out like living whips, faster and more vicious than before. Tendrils snapped toward us, seeking flesh.

Kira moved first — sword flashing in a silver arc, cutting through the nearest tendril. It recoiled, then reformed instantly, faster than before, thicker. She pivoted, blocking a claw swipe from a Hellspawn that lunged from the portal. Blade met bone — sparks flew, the creature shrieked, black ichor spraying across the grass and sizzling where it landed.

Jade screamed — dagger raised — as two Hellspawn charged her. She slashed wildly at the first — blade slicing through its forearm. Ichor sprayed, burning her sleeve. The creature recoiled — but the second grabbed her wrist, twisting hard enough to make bone creak. She kicked, drove her heel into its knee — bone cracked with a wet snap. It released her with a howl, staggering back.

Mom backed toward the porch — hands empty, eyes wide with terror and fury. "Raine! Get back!"

Dad staggered forward — weak but determined — shielding her with his body. "Stay behind me!"

I lifted the chalice higher.

The ring blazed — silver light exploding outward, cutting through the dark like a blade through flesh, illuminating every grotesque detail of the creatures.

The chalice answered — roar shaking the ground, vibration rattling teeth and bones, the sound deep enough to feel in the chest.

Power surged — raw, ancient, overwhelming — a wave of silver that rolled across the yard.

Hellspawn recoiled — shrieking as the light touched them. Shadows burned away like paper in fire. Some dissolved completely — black mist scattering on the wind, leaving only scorched grass. Others staggered, limbs hardening into brittle silver, cracking and crumbling with wet snaps.

Medb snarled — raising both hands.

Black water rose behind her — massive wave, churning with shadow, ready to crash down on all of us, drowning everything in darkness.

Kira shouted over the roar — "Raine! The chalice — bind them all!"

I focused — intent razor-sharp.

Bind. Silence. End this.

The ring screamed — light surging in a blinding wave.

Silver chains erupted from the chalice bowl — whipping through the yard like living serpents, faster and thicker than before.

They wrapped around Medb — tighter this time — pinning her arms to her sides, cutting into her skin. She screamed — fury turning to panic — struggling against the tightening metal, veins bulging.

Chains lashed out — binding Hellspawn mid-leap. Creatures froze — shadows hardening into silver prisons. One by one they dropped — immobilized, silenced, their crimson eyes dimming to dull embers.

The wave collapsed — harmless water splashing across the grass, soaking shoes and clothes, pooling in the claw marks left by the creatures.

Medb dropped to her knees again — chains tightening further, drawing thin lines of blood.

Her voice — forced, ragged — tore from her throat.

"I… serve… the queens… to claim… the chalice… to silence… the Templars… to control… Neverwhere… forever."

More truth spilled — unbidden, unstoppable — revealing the queens' plan, the Hellspawn alliance, the timeline, the betrayal within the order — names, dates, locations.

Guards — Templar reinforcements — burst from the house. They froze — staring at the chained Medb, the bound Hellspawn, the glowing chalice in my hands.

Mom stepped forward — voice steady despite the tremor in her hands.

"You heard her," she said. "Stand down. Or face the consequences."

Medb looked up — eyes burning with hate, blood on her lips.

"You… dare…"

The chalice flared again — brighter, hotter.

More truth poured — her fear, her desperation, her knowledge of the next wave.

The elves lowered their weapons — slowly, uncertainly.

Medb screamed — final, desperate fury.

Black water erupted from her mouth — aimed straight at me — a spear of shadow and liquid death.

Kira dove — sword raised to intercept.

The water hit her — slamming her back against the porch railing. She gasped — blade dropping — body convulsing as shadow spread across her chest like ink in water.

"Kira!"

I ran to her — chalice still glowing.

Medb laughed — weak, dying.

"You… can't… save them… all…"

The chains tightened — silver light flaring one last time.

Medb's eyes widened — then dimmed. She collapsed — unconscious, bound, breathing shallow.

The Hellspawn dissolved — black mist fading into nothing.

The yard went still — only ragged breathing, distant sirens, and the soft drip of water on grass.

I knelt beside Kira. She coughed — black water spilling from her lips, shadow still crawling across her skin.

"Raine…"

I lifted the chalice over her.

The ring pulsed — urgent, pleading.

Light poured down — warm, healing, golden now instead of silver.

The black water evaporated. Shadow burned away. Her breathing steadied. Color returned to her face. The wound on her shoulder closed — leaving only a faint scar.

She opened her eyes — weak smile.

"You… did it."

Dad and Mom rushed over. Jade helped Kira sit up — tears streaming down her face.

The Templar guards secured the remaining chains around Medb — unconscious, bound, no longer a threat.

Mom looked at me — eyes shining with pride and fear.

"You saved us."

Dad placed a hand on my shoulder — grip surprisingly strong.

"You saved everything."

I looked at the chalice — light fading, but still warm in my hands.

The ring cooled — satisfied, quiet.

But the portal behind Medb remained open — jagged, unstable, edges pulsing.

Shadows stirred inside — deeper, darker, larger.

More coming.

Kira stood — shaky but determined — sword back in hand.

"We need to close it. Now."

I raised the chalice one last time.

The ring flared — final, desperate pulse.

Light surged into the portal — silver meeting black.

The rift screamed — edges collapsing inward.

It sealed — with a sound like thunder rolling away into silence.

The portal vanished.

True silence returned.

The yard was ours again.

But the war wasn't over.

It had only just begun.
