Chapter 27: The Poison Paradox
A heavy, suffocating silence filled the underground lab as the blue diagnostic liquid didn't just burn—it vanished. It sank into Ren's skin like water into parched sand. Master Kara's face went pale, his hands trembling as he stepped away from the table.
"I'm sorry, Kimo," Kara whispered, his voice cracking. "I... I can't let this continue. This will be the sixth time I've had to watch a student die in this chair. If the potion sinks in, the human soul is gone. He's becoming a monster."
Kimo stood frozen. His mind flashed back to the six students he had already buried—faces of young men and women who trusted him, only to turn into mindless Ferals. Not again, he thought. Not this kid.
"He's only seventeen, Kara!" Kimo roared, grabbing the alchemist by his collar. "Look at him! He hasn't attacked us. His body is normal. There has to be another way! We can't just execute him like a stray dog!"
Kara sighed, his eyes filled with a deep, weary sadness. "He is in the 'Grey Zone.' He is a Feral in spirit, but his body hasn't mutated yet. There is one way—one theory—but it's never been proven. It's a gamble where the prize is either life or an agonizing death."
"Tell me," Kimo demanded.
"The Feral essence is a form of 'Corrupted Life.' To stop it, we need the opposite. We need 'Pure Destruction.' We need to poison him," Kara explained.
Mika gasped, her hand flying to her mouth. "You want to give him Zahar? Poisoning him while his body is already failing?"
"Yes," Kara nodded. "If the poison kills the Feral cells before it kills the human heart, he might stabilize. But the dosage must be perfect. One drop too many, and we kill the boy ourselves."
Mika stepped forward, her amber eyes glowing with a faint, supportive aura. "I can help. As a Supporter, I can sense the resonance of the chemicals. I won't let him die."
Kimo looked at Mika, then at the broken boy on the table. He walked over to a chair and slumped into it, burying his face in his hands. "Do what you have to do. Just save him."
Mika closed her eyes, extending her hands over the various vials on the shelves. As a Supporter, she could 'see' the properties of the liquids. In her mind's eye, three specific potions began to glow.
"Master Kara, I need these three," Mika said, her voice steady and commanding:
Noxious Viper Gall: A green, acidic liquid known for its paralyzing toxins.
Midnight Hemlock Extract: A pitch-black oil that slows the heart to the brink of death.
Corrosive Shadow Essence: A swirling purple vapor that eats through Vane energy.
Kara quickly grabbed the three vials from the drawer. With practiced hands, he began to mix them in a lead-lined bowl. As the liquids merged, they hissed and bubbled, eventually settling into a thick, oily Black Poison. It looked like a liquid void, cold and lethal.
I don't know why, Mika thought, watching Ren's chest heave with shallow breaths. But I feel a strange connection to him. It's like his soul is screaming for help from a very long way away. I won't let you slip away, Ren.
"It's ready," Kara said, holding a syringe filled with the Black Poison. He looked at Kimo one last time. "Once I inject this into his jugular, there is no going back. His heart will stop for exactly ten seconds. In those ten seconds, the poison and the Feral essence will fight for his soul."
Kimo didn't look up. "Do it."
