Chapter 5 - Chapter 5:

Chapter 5 — Fractures in the Real

Ethan noticed it the next morning.

At first, it was small.

Subtle.

Almost ignorable.

But once he saw it…

he couldn't unsee it.

---

The sun rose like normal through his window.

Warm light filled the room.

The hum of the city outside drifted in—distant traffic, faint voices, life continuing as it always had.

Ethan stood by the window, watching.

"…Everything looks the same…"

He paused.

"…But it isn't."

The system appeared.

---

Belief Interaction Active

Environment Stability: Decreasing

---

Ethan frowned.

"…Because of me."

A flicker of doubt crossed his mind.

He immediately pushed it down.

"…No."

He shook his head.

"…I'm still in control."

The system reacted faintly.

---

Belief Stabilization Detected

---

Ethan exhaled.

"…Good."

He turned away from the window.

"…I just need to be careful."

---

The First Distortion

He walked into the kitchen.

Filled a glass with water.

Simple.

Normal.

Grounded.

He held the glass in his hand and stared at it.

"…If I focus on something small…"

He narrowed his eyes.

"…I should be able to affect it without causing… damage."

The system flickered.

---

Suggestion: Low-intensity belief testing.

---

Ethan nodded.

"…Right."

He focused on the water.

"…Stay perfectly still."

Nothing happened.

He frowned.

"…Stay still."

Still nothing.

"…Come on…"

He adjusted his focus.

Not forcing.

Not demanding.

Just… believing.

"…The water is calm."

The surface of the water trembled.

Barely.

Just a ripple.

Ethan's eyes widened.

"…Okay…"

The ripple grew.

A faint distortion formed across the surface, like the water was reacting to something unseen.

Ethan held his breath.

"…That's not… normal."

The system flickered.

---

Warning: Micro-distortion forming.

---

The water in the glass suddenly froze.

Not ice.

But stillness.

Absolute stillness.

Like time had paused inside the glass alone.

Ethan froze.

"…What…?"

He gently tapped the glass.

No movement.

He shook it slightly.

Still nothing.

"…No way…"

Then—

Crack.

A thin fracture appeared along the surface of the water.

Not the glass.

The water itself.

Ethan's heart skipped.

"…That's not supposed to happen."

The system flashed violently.

---

Reality Layer Disruption Detected

---

Ethan quickly lowered the glass.

"…Stop. Stop."

He forced his belief to relax.

"…Return to normal."

The water trembled.

Then—

Flowed again.

As if nothing had happened.

Ethan exhaled sharply.

"…Okay… okay…"

He set the glass down.

"…That was… not small."

---

The First Casualty

A sudden noise came from outside.

A loud crash echoed through the building.

Ethan's head snapped toward the door.

"…What was that?"

The system flickered.

---

External disturbance detected.

---

Ethan hesitated.

"…No… not again…"

But something felt… wrong.

He approached the door slowly.

"…Stay calm."

He reached for the handle.

Paused.

Then opened it.

---

The hallway was different.

At least… it shouldn't have been.

The lights flickered.

The walls looked… slightly distorted.

Not physically broken.

But wrong.

Like a memory of a hallway instead of the hallway itself.

Ethan stepped forward cautiously.

"…This isn't normal."

He moved further into the corridor.

And then he saw it.

A person.

Standing at the far end.

Not moving.

Not reacting.

Just… there.

Ethan's breath slowed.

"…Hey?"

No response.

He took another step.

"…Hello?"

The figure didn't move.

Ethan narrowed his eyes.

"…Something's wrong."

The system flickered violently.

---

WARNING: Reality anchor instability detected.

---

"…Reality anchor?" Ethan muttered.

The hallway flickered.

The figure suddenly shifted.

Not walking.

Not moving normally.

But jumping forward.

Closer.

Ethan stumbled back.

"…What the—"

The figure flickered again.

Now only a few meters away.

Ethan's pulse spiked.

"…Stop."

The figure froze.

Ethan blinked.

"…Did… I do that?"

The system responded.

---

Observation: External entity is affected by user belief field.

---

Ethan swallowed.

"…So I can affect this too…"

The figure began to flicker.

Like it was losing stability.

Ethan stared.

"…Wait…"

The figure's shape started breaking apart.

Like static dissolving into nothing.

Ethan's eyes widened.

"…No—"

He instinctively tried to hold it together.

"…Stay… stay…"

The system flashed.

---

Warning: Attempting stabilization of unstable entity.

---

The figure stopped breaking apart.

It stood there.

But now—

It was… wrong.

Distorted.

Its outline unstable.

Its presence… incomplete.

Ethan's face went pale.

"…What did I just do?"

The figure slowly turned its head toward him.

Its voice came out in fragments.

"…Ethan…"

"…why…"

Ethan stepped back.

"…I didn't mean to—"

The figure flickered violently.

Then—

Collapsed.

Not physically.

But conceptually.

Like it was erased.

Gone.

Silence filled the hallway.

Ethan stood there, breathing heavily.

"…I didn't…"

He looked at his hands.

"…I didn't mean to do that…"

The system appeared.

---

Result: Entity destabilized.

Entity removed from current reality layer.

---

Ethan's chest tightened.

"…Removed?"

A new message appeared.

---

Warning: Belief application without precision results in unintended consequences.

---

Ethan backed away slowly.

"…I didn't kill it…"

"…Did I?"

Silence.

No answer.

Only the echo of what had just happened.

---

The Realization

Ethan returned to his apartment.

He closed the door.

Locked it.

Then leaned against it, breathing hard.

"…This is bad…"

He stared at the system.

"…This isn't just power."

The system flickered.

---

Affirmative.

---

Ethan swallowed.

"…This is responsibility."

A pause.

Then—

"…And I'm not ready for it."

The system responded.

---

Correction: Readiness is irrelevant.

---

Ethan exhaled slowly.

"…Yeah."

He looked at his hands again.

"…I figured."

A long silence filled the room.

Then—

Ethan straightened.

"…But I can learn."

The system flickered faintly.

---

Belief Integrity: 9%

---

Ethan nodded.

"…And I will."

Outside—

The world remained.

But cracks were beginning to spread.

And Ethan…

had just taken his first step toward mastering something far beyond human limits.
