Chapter 6: The Weight of a Word
Inside the Cabin – Boeing 747.
The air inside the stationary plane is cool and smells of leather and jet fuel. JAE-WON and HAEYOUNG stand at the front, the masters of this metallic beast, while JUNGHAN, HYUNA, and SUNG-MIN follow them through the aisles.
Jae-won: "To understand the passenger experience, you have to understand the cockpit's harmony with the cabin. Everything from the lighting to the seat fabric affects the psychological comfort during turbulence."
Hyuna is trying to keep up, her pen scratching against her notepad, but her hand is shaky. She's exhausted from the emotional roller coaster. Jae-won stops by her row. He reaches into his pocket and pulls out a simple, braided blue wristband.
Jae-won: "Here. Today is Friendship Day. You look like you could use a friend, Hyuna-ssi. Want one?"
Hyuna: (Laughing softly, surprised) "Really? I... I don't actually have many friends. I've been too busy chasing one person."
Jae-won: "I'm a pilot. I'm in the air half my life. I only have one real friend, too." He glances at Haeyoung's back. "Take it."
Hyuna slides the band onto her wrist. A tiny spark of warmth returns to her face.
Hyuna: "Friends?"
Jae-won: (Nodding with a wink) "Friends."
The Observation Deck.
Junghan isn't listening to the technical specs anymore. He is watching HAEYOUNG. She has paused to tie her long hair into a practical ponytail. The wind from the open hangar doors catches the loose strands, and the sunlight through the cockpit glass illuminates her sharp, perfect profile.
Sung-min: (Whispering to himself) "Boss is gone. He's completely cooked. RIP Director Kim's cold heart."
Hyuna looks up from her notes and freezes. She see it—the way Junghan is looking at Haeyoung. It's a look of pure, artistic worship. The "burning jealousy" from before turns into a cold, heavy stone in her stomach. She stares at Junghan, her heart breaking in real-time.
Jae-won: "Miss Hyuna? Where is your attention?"
The sudden silence makes everyone turn. Hyuna's eyes are still locked on Junghan.
Haeyoung: (Coldly, snapping her folder shut) "Miss, we aren't here to waste time. We have three international flights to lead after this briefing. If you aren't focused on the work, you're in the way."
Junghan: (Trying to regain his 'Boss' persona, but sounding harsh) "Yeah, Hyuna. Why aren't you focusing? Don't be so dumb. You're making our company look bad."
Haeyoung's head snaps toward Junghan. Her eyes narrow.
Haeyoung: "Jae-won, take this file and explain the safety aesthetics again to her. And you, Mr. Junghan... watch the way you talk to a woman. If you didn't understand what I said earlier, let me be clear: bring some kindness into your words."
She says this without even looking at him, her eyes fixed on her tablet.
Junghan: (Stunned, his voice losing its edge) "Amm... actually, Miss Haeyoung, I was just... I wanted her to understand the importance of..."
Haeyoung: "I already told her to focus. There's no need for a two-sided scolding. It's inefficient and rude."
Junghan goes silent. For the first time in his life, he has no comeback. He looks like a student who just got scolded by the teacher he has a crush on. Sung-min looks at Haeyoung with pure awe. She is so hot when she's bossing the boss, he thinks.
Hyuna: (Murmuring under her breath) "She's not easy to understand, is she?"
Jae-won: (Laughing) "How did you know what I was thinking? You almost murmured that out loud."
Hyuna finally lets out a real, genuine laugh. Jae-won joins her, their "friendship" feeling more real by the second.
The Q&A – End of Session.
A junior designer from the Art Team raises her hand.
Junior: "Pilots, as an art student, 'Love' is the most important theme for us. What is love to you? It helps us with the 'Global Wings' emotional branding."
Jae-won: (Smiling warmly) "For me? Love is friendship. If she can't be my bestest friend, she can't be my lover. It has to start with a bond that can survive a storm."
Haeyoung's head whips around. She stares at Jae-won, her expression unreadable, but her fingers tighten on her folder.
Junior: "And what about you, Captain Haeyoung?"
Haeyoung: (A small, dry smirk) "I don't know what love is. But from what I've seen, it's a tough thing that complicates your flight path. Maybe something you should stay away from."
The room breaks into light laughter as she chuckles. As she laughs, Junghan stops breathing. Her laughter is the most beautiful sound he's ever heard. He keeps staring at her, completely lost, until Sung-min has to physically hit his arm.
Sung-min: "Boss... we have to go. The meeting is over. Boss!"
[FADE OUT]
