Chapter 5 - Chapter 5: A Beautiful Target

This is an intriguing turn for the story! I've polished the prose to heighten the tension, sharpen the dialogue, and lean into that "cold protagonist" energy you've established.

The Return of Adi

Ash stepped into the guild hall, and the atmosphere shifted instantly. Every eye in the room was drawn to him. His hair seemed to catch the ambient light, shimmering with an ethereal, unnatural luster—a physical manifestation of the change within him.

"I suppose I have to register all over again," he murmured, his voice a low vibration. He approached the counter, his expression a mask of indifference as he met the receptionist's gaze. "I'd like to join the guild."

The receptionist offered a practiced, polite smile, but Ash felt only a bitter chill. *I see how it is,* he thought. *If a man is wronged, no one stands by him. They'll always side with the woman, regardless of the truth.*

He pulled out a chair and sat, focused entirely on his guild card. He was oblivious to the fact that the receptionist hadn't looked away once; she was staring at him, utterly entranced. *How can someone be that attractive?* she wondered, her pulse hammering against her throat. *I wish he'd stay with me forever.*

On the form, he didn't use his old name. With a steady hand, he etched his new identity into the ink: **Adi**.

The Departure

While Adi sat in the hall, his former party members were only just waking up, oblivious to the fact that their world had fractured. Hours later, the panic set in. They burst into the guild hub, breathless and frantic.

"Ma'am! Ash is missing! Have you seen him?" one of the girls cried out, her voice trembling.

The receptionist didn't bother looking up from her paperwork. "Oh, him? He left the party," she said dismissively. "He mentioned he wasn't capable of keeping up anymore, so he walked away."

Before they could process the shock, she gestured toward the mysterious man sitting nearby. "However, I recommend **Adi** here as a replacement."

The girls turned in unison. Adi felt their collective gaze, but he didn't return it. He simply stared at the old guild card in his hand—the one that still read *Ash*—and began to slowly, methodically crush it into dust within his fist.

The New Member

Desperate and disoriented, the girls found themselves magnetically drawn to him. Adi continued his charade, pretending he couldn't hear their frantic whispers, though he caught every syllable. He stood up to leave, but a knight standing by the pillars gasped, murmuring, "Impossible..."

The receptionist shot the knight a sharp, possessive look. "I've taken a liking to him," she warned, her voice dropping to a dangerous edge. "So don't any of you get too close."

To Adi's surprise, the girls—usually so defiant—nodded like obedient children. As he began to walk away, a hand shot out and gripped his wrist. It was **Reina**.

"Where are you going?" she asked, her voice tight

Adi turned, his gaze meeting hers. The coldness in his eyes was like a physical blow. Reina flushed a deep, burning red and looked away, unable to maintain the contact.

"Why do you need me?" Adi asked, his voice devoid of heat. "For that matter... who even are you?"

The words stung like a lash. Reina looked at the floor, her grip tightening. "Please... if we don't find a new member now, our party will be disbanded. Everything we worked for... it'll be ruined."

Adi gave a sharp, curt nod. "Fine."

From across the room, the receptionist shouted over the din, "Then get over here! Register your new member and let's get this party back on the books!"

The Queen's Law

As Reina hurried to complete the registration, Adi leaned against the desk, his hand resting casually on the wood. The receptionist reached out, her fingers trembling as she tried to brush against his hand. Adi caught the movement and shifted his gaze to her—a look so frigid it froze her in place.

Following them out of the hall, Adi broke the silence. "So. Was there someone in this party before me? And why did that receptionist start clinging to me so desperately?"

Rem sighed, glancing back at the guild hall. "In this territory, things work differently. If a woman has a husband or a partner of exceptional beauty, they receive significant subsidies from the government. The more handsome the man, the higher the pay."

Adi's brow furrowed. "What? Who runs a government like that?"

Maria answered, her voice low and respectful. "The Queen, **Tiana Fitzgerald**."

Adi listened to the explanation, a frown deepening on his face as the pieces of this strange society began to click into place. "And what does the Queen get out of this arrangement?" he asked, his voice laced with suspicion. "Why pay people just for being attractive?"

Maria looked at him, her expression a mix of pity and warning. "It's about status, Adi. Under the law of Tiana Fitzgerald, she has the right to claim the most handsome man found in the realm. The goal is to be recognized as the most beautiful couple in the entire kingdom."

She leaned in closer, her voice dropping to a whisper. "The Queen doesn't care about feelings. If there's no love, it's no problem for her—you simply become her 'toy.' A prized possession to be displayed at her side. That receptionist back there? She doesn't want you. She wants the finder's fee the government pays for reporting a man of your rank."

Adi froze, a sudden chill running down his spine. The memory of his walk to the guild flashed through his mind—the lingering gazes, the hushed whispers, and the hunger in the eyes of every woman he passed.

"So that's why..." Adi murmured, his hand tightening unconsciously. "That's why every girl on the way here was staring at me with those bright, hunting eyes."

He looked back toward the guild hall, the "kindness" of the receptionist now appearing as nothing more than a trap. He wasn't just an adventurer anymore; in this kingdom, he was the most valuable prey in the land.
