Chapter 1 - THE WEDDING THAT BROKE MY HEART

The grand hall glittered with crystal chandeliers, the soft hum of conversation filling the air. Guests laughed, clinked glasses, and congratulated the newlyweds. But for Amara, none of it mattered.

Her heart felt like it had been ripped from her chest and stomped into the polished marble floor.

She stood near the back of the hall, her hands gripping the delicate clutch she had carried for months, wondering how it had come to this. Tunde… her Tunde, the man she had loved since university, was standing at the altar, exchanging vows with Chioma — her best friend.

Every word from the officiant, every laugh from the crowd, cut her deeper than she could have imagined.

How could this happen? she thought, the world blurring around her. Wasn't he mine? Didn't we…

Her mind flashed back to the countless nights they had spent together, sharing secrets, dreams, and promises of a future that now seemed like a cruel joke. She remembered the warmth of his hand on hers, the way his smile had lit up her darkest days, the way she had imagined a life together.

And now… he was smiling at Chioma, holding her hand, whispering words that were meant to bind her to someone else.

Amara's chest tightened. She could barely breathe, and yet she stayed. Part of her wanted to run out and scream, to tell everyone that this marriage was a betrayal of everything she had believed in. But she couldn't. She couldn't ruin the moment — the moment that had become her nightmare.

She stepped back into the shadows, watching silently as the ceremony continued. Her thoughts were a storm of anger, pain, and disbelief.

The reception began, the music swelling with celebration. Guests danced, clapped, and congratulated the couple. Amara moved through the crowd, smiling politely, though her heart was screaming. Every toast, every laugh, every glass raised reminded her of what she had lost.

Tunde's eyes met hers briefly across the hall. In that instant, Amara felt the old connection, the bond they once shared. But it was gone, replaced by a wall of inevitability. He smiled — the same warm, familiar smile — and she had to look away.

Later, as the night wore on, Amara found herself alone on the balcony, the cool night air brushing against her face. She pressed her hands to her stomach instinctively, feeling the subtle flutter that reminded her that she was carrying his child — a secret that no one could know.

He doesn't even know, she thought, tears welling in her eyes. He doesn't know, and I have to protect this life… my life.

Her phone buzzed in her purse, pulling her from her thoughts. A message from Chioma appeared:

"I'm so sorry, Amara. I didn't mean for this to happen."

Amara's hands shook as she read it. Sorry? After everything?

She dropped the phone into her clutch, burying her face in her hands. How could friendship, love, and trust all collapse in one night?

A shadow moved behind her. She looked up to see Tunde standing on the balcony steps, his expression unreadable.

"Amara…" he said softly, his voice breaking through the night air.

She didn't respond. Her body trembled with a mix of anger and longing.

"I need to talk to you," he continued. "Please, just five minutes."

Amara's mind screamed to run, to slam the door and forget this moment. But something in his eyes — that same warmth, the silent apology — made her hesitate.

Five minutes… she thought. What could he possibly say that would make this bearable?

And then he took a step closer, reaching out as if to bridge the impossible distance between them.

Her stomach twisted. She realized that tonight wasn't just about heartbreak. It was about secrets, decisions, and consequences she wasn't ready for… but couldn't escape.

Cliffhanger:

Tunde whispered, his voice barely audible over the wind:

"You're carrying my child, aren't you?"

Amara froze. Her heart skipped, her hands clenched. How did he know? And more importantly… what would she do next?
