Chapter 26 - Chapter 27: Meeting Gwen! Mr. Fantastic!

Happy respectfully opened the car door. Lin Feng stepped out and followed him into the gala.

The venue was already buzzing. Everyone was dressed in their finest, the air thick with the scent of expensive perfume and success. The women were especially radiant, dressed in daring and elegant gowns.

As Lin Feng walked through the crowd, he spotted several figures he recognized from "TV." He even saw the future members of the Fantastic Four. At this point, however, they were still just normal humans—extraordinarily brilliant ones, but human nonetheless.

As he passed by, he overheard Reed Richards talking to some investors about funding. It reminded Lin Feng of how the Fantastic Four were born: a research trip to space that ran into a cosmic storm. That might be another iconic scene to watch out for later, he mused.

"Mr. Lin, Mr. Stark asked me to make sure you're well taken care of. He'll be over to greet you personally in a bit!" Happy said.

"Go ahead and do your thing, Happy," Lin Feng replied with a wave. Happy didn't argue and left with a polite wish for him to have a good night.

Lin Feng scanned the room, picked up a glass of champagne, and headed toward a quiet corner. His arrival didn't draw much attention. In high society, people usually recognized one another; as a newcomer—and an Asian man at that—few were inclined to approach him first.

He didn't mind. Sitting in the corner, he sipped his champagne and enjoyed the rare moment of peace. There were plenty of models and stars drifting about.

Tony really knows how to throw a party. The perks of being a playboy, Lin Feng thought.

Just as he was lost in thought, a crisp, familiar voice rang out.

"Lin? What are you doing here?"

"Gwen?" Lin Feng turned to see Gwen Stacy. She was wearing a stunning ball gown, her blonde hair cascading down her shoulders like a waterfall. She looked like a princess straight out of a fairy tale.

"A friend invited me," Lin Feng explained simply, before adding a compliment. "Gwen, you look beautiful tonight."

Gwen's face flushed pink. She lowered her head and whispered, "Oh, please. My dad forced me to come. I usually hate dressing up like this!"

"Haha," Lin Feng chuckled.Lin Feng chuckled and teased, "Then I really should thank your father. Otherwise, I'd never have seen this beautiful side of you!"

"..."

Gwen looked up, suddenly staring at Lin Feng with a serious expression. "What about Jessica, then? What exactly is the relationship between the two of you?"

"More than friends, not quite lovers."

Lin Feng was perfectly candid, giving a shrug without any intention of hiding the truth. His feelings for Jessica were rooted more in gratitude and a protective sort of affection. As for love? Men were capable of vast amounts of affection; as far as he was concerned, he certainly wasn't going to tie himself down to a single tree.

"I see..." Gwen nodded, lost in thought.

The two sat in the corner, chatting idly back and forth. Both shared a personality that wasn't particularly fond of socializing—at least not at these high-society galas where everyone wore a mask of hypocrisy. Internally, Gwen wanted nothing to do with it.

As they talked, Lin Feng could sense that Gwen's mood was off. It was as if she were carrying a heavy burden. With a bit of thought, he easily guessed what she was worried about: it had to be her awakening superpowers and the physical mutations. While Peter Parker was lighthearted enough to quickly accept his new reality, Gwen was a girl and naturally more sensitive. It was only logical for her to be concerned.

Lin Feng didn't think much of it, however. He knew that Gwen's powers had no negative side effects. Her worrying was entirely unnecessary; she just needed time to get used to it.

Tap, tap, tap.

At that moment, the sound of approaching footsteps reached them. Both turned to see who it was, and Gwen's brow immediately furrowed.

"Hey, Gwen! I knew you'd be here!"

Flash Thompson walked up slowly, looking sharp and handsome in a tailored suit. He walked straight to Gwen, not even gracing Lin Feng with a glance. Staring directly at her, he said with an air of practiced sincerity, "Gwen, may I have this dance?"

"Sorry, I'm not feeling well," Gwen replied flatly, rejecting him instantly.

Flash's face stiffened. However, he quickly forced a smile back onto his face and said solicitously, "Are you okay, Gwen? My father is close with Mr. Stark. Let me call a doctor to check on you!"

"That won't be necessary!" Gwen's expression darkened. She shook her head. "Flash, I have zero interest in anything romantic right now. Please stop bothering me!"

"..."

At those words, Flash completely lost his composure. Gwen's rejection was far too blunt. Doing it right in front of Lin Feng made him feel even more humiliated, and a surge of resentment began to boil in his chest.

"Gwen, you know my feelings for you are genuine!" He refused to give up, trying to press further.

"Enough, Flash!" Gwen was becoming impatient. She already disliked these fake social gatherings; being harassed by Flash only made her mood worse. The only bright spot of the night had been running into Lin Feng.
