Chapter 59 - The Heart That Chose II

Part Two

The sanctuary settled into a peaceful silence once more.

Morning sunlight filtered gently through the emerald canopy above, illuminating drifting petals that danced lazily upon the breeze while crystal-clear streams wound quietly between flowering trees. Somewhere nearby, birds continued singing without concern, their melodies mixing naturally with the distant murmur of adventurers preparing for the expedition beyond the sanctuary.

Yet...

Something had changed.

Mirelle felt it.

The robin perched upon her shoulder suddenly became unusually alert.

Its tiny head turned sharply toward the forest.

It chirped.

Once.

Twice.

Then launched itself into the air without warning.

Mirelle looked up.

"...What is it?"

The robin circled once above the clearing before landing atop a moss-covered stone near the edge of the woods.

Then...

It bowed.

Not to Mirelle.

Not to Theron.

Not to Elena.

To someone...

Still hidden among the trees.

Every conversation slowly came to a stop.

Theron noticed first.

"What..."

He looked toward the forest.

"...has everyone so interested?"

Even the foxes resting beneath the sanctuary shelters quietly lifted their heads.

The deer grazing nearby froze.

Birdsong slowly faded.

Not because of fear.

Expectation.

The forest itself seemed to pause.

Waiting.

A tiny paw emerged from behind the roots of the ancient cedar.

Then another.

A striped tail slowly appeared.

Bright amber eyes cautiously peered around the trunk.

Ember.

The little red panda remained perfectly still for several long seconds.

Watching Adrian.

Not blinking.

Not moving.

Simply...

Looking.

Adrian smiled gently.

"Hello."

His voice was quiet.

Warm.

No sudden movements.

No reaching.

No attempt to coax him closer.

He simply...

Acknowledged him.

Ember's ears twitched.

The little red panda tilted his head.

His nose twitched once.

Then again.

He inhaled deeply.

The tiny creature's entire body suddenly froze.

Those bright amber eyes grew wide.

The confusion...

Vanished.

Completely.

His striped tail stood straight.

The little red panda made the smallest sound.

A soft...

Hopeful chirp.

Mirelle's breath caught.

"...No..."

She whispered.

Without another moment of hesitation...

Ember exploded into motion.

He sprinted across the clearing so quickly that Mira barely caught a glimpse of red fur weaving effortlessly between roots and flowers. He bounded onto a fallen log, launched himself into the air and—

Straight into Adrian's chest.

"Oof!"

Adrian instinctively caught the tiny red panda before either of them hit the ground.

Ember immediately climbed onto his shoulders as though he had done it a hundred times before, wrapping his enormous striped tail comfortably around Adrian's neck while rubbing the top of his head enthusiastically against Adrian's cheek.

Tiny happy chirps escaped him one after another.

He refused to let go.

Adrian laughed.

"Well..."

He carefully scratched behind Ember's ears.

"I guess you've made your decision."

Ember answered by pressing himself even closer.

Silence.

Absolute silence.

Mira's mouth slowly fell open.

"...That's..."

She looked at her father.

"...That's never happened before, has it?"

Theron slowly shook his head.

"...No."

Even the giant elf looked genuinely stunned.

Mirelle simply stood there.

Her amber eyes never left Ember.

The robin quietly returned to her shoulder.

She didn't even notice.

After several long moments she slowly walked toward Adrian.

Ember immediately turned his head.

Not aggressively.

Protectively.

Watching her.

She smiled softly.

"It's alright."

The little red panda studied her for another second.

Then relaxed.

Resting comfortably across Adrian's shoulders once more.

Mirelle looked at Adrian.

Then at Ember.

Then back again.

"I've..."

She laughed quietly to herself.

"...I've never seen him choose anyone like that."

Adrian looked down at the tiny red panda.

"I thought familiars chose slowly."

"They usually do."

She smiled.

"Some take days."

"Some take months."

"I've known one spirit wolf that followed a Ranger for nearly two years before finally deciding."

Her eyes drifted back toward Ember.

"He decided..."

She looked at the little red panda currently making himself completely at home.

"...in less than three seconds."

Mira carefully stepped closer.

"Can..."

She hesitated.

"...can I pet him?"

Ember looked at her.

His little nose twitched.

He quietly reached one tiny paw toward her.

Mira gently touched the top of his head.

His ears flicked happily.

"Oh..."

Her entire face lit up.

"He's so fluffy!"

Theron chuckled.

"I think you've just made a lifelong friend."

Adrian looked toward Mirelle.

"So..."

He smiled.

"...what happens now?"

Mirelle's expression softened.

"Nothing."

"...Nothing?"

She nodded.

"He's already answered."

She gently rested one hand against Ember's back.

"The bond has begun."

"It can't be forced."

"It can't be rushed."

"It simply..."

She smiled.

"...grows."

Elena walked over quietly, her aunt Lysara beside her.

The Guardian Spirit smiled warmly as Ember looked curiously toward her glowing emerald aura.

"He likes you."

Mirelle nodded.

"He likes everyone."

She looked toward Adrian.

"But..."

"...he chose only one."

Far above the sanctuary...

Hidden among the highest branches of the World Tree's distant descendants...

Tiny emerald lights appeared.

One.

Then another.

Then dozens.

Spriggans.

Watching.

The little elder Adrian had met days earlier slowly removed his tiny wooden hat.

Around him...

Every other Spriggan did the same.

A silent acknowledgement.

Not of power.

Not of destiny.

Of a choice.

The forest...

Had accepted Adrian Cole.

Theron finally broke the silence.

A grin spread slowly beneath his beard.

"I suppose..."

He folded his arms.

"...we'd better survive this dungeon."

Adrian laughed.

"I was planning on it."

Theron pointed toward the tiny red panda now happily sitting across Adrian's shoulders.

"You've got someone waiting for dinner now."

Ember immediately chirped loudly.

Everyone laughed.

Even Mirelle.

The peaceful moment lingered only a heartbeat longer before Garrick's voice echoed from the ancient stone arch.

"The teleportation circle is ready!"

The expedition looked toward the dungeon entrance.

Their smiles slowly faded into determination.

Adrian gently rested one hand against Ember's back.

"You coming?"

Ember looked toward the shimmering gateway.

Then back at Adrian.

His little face became unusually serious.

He gave one quiet chirp.

Almost...

A warning.

Then climbed onto Adrian's shoulder once more.

Ready.

Whatever waited beneath the earth...

They would face it together.

The laughter that had filled the sanctuary gradually faded into quiet determination as the expedition gathered before the ancient stone arch. Moments earlier it had been a place of reunion, discovery and new beginnings. Now every adventurer standing beneath the towering pillars found themselves staring into the shimmering veil of blue mana suspended between the weathered stone columns.

The entrance no longer resembled simple magic.

It looked...

Alive.

The surface rippled gently like an undisturbed lake reflecting the morning sky, yet every few seconds ancient runes carved into the surrounding stone pulsed with faint silver light before disappearing once more beneath creeping vines. Time had weathered the arch itself, but the magic flowing through it remained as vibrant as the day it had first been woven.

Adrian stepped closer.

The mana pressing against his senses felt unlike anything he had encountered before.

It wasn't hostile.

Nor welcoming.

It simply...

Existed.

Patiently.

Waiting for those willing to descend.

Beside him, Ember's cheerful personality seemed to disappear entirely.

The little red panda had climbed from Adrian's shoulder onto the top of his travelling pack where he sat perfectly still, his tiny ears standing upright as amber eyes remained fixed upon the shimmering gateway.

Adrian noticed immediately.

"You alright?"

Ember answered with a soft chirp.

Not frightened.

Concerned.

His striped tail slowly wrapped itself around Adrian's shoulder.

Almost protectively.

Mirelle quietly watched the exchange.

"He can feel it."

Adrian looked towards her.

"The dungeon?"

She nodded.

"Familiars sense mana differently than we do."

Her eyes drifted toward the portal.

"To us..."

"...it's ancient magic."

She looked back at Ember.

"To him..."

"...it feels like listening to the heartbeat of a mountain."

Several royal mages knelt around a massive circular platform carved into the bedrock beneath the archway. Brilliant blue crystals had been carefully placed into dozens of intricate sockets surrounding the ancient teleportation circle, each humming softly with contained mana while silver runes stretched outward in elegant spirals across the polished stone.

One elderly mage slowly rose as the expedition approached.

His robes bore the emerald crest of Verdant Reach stitched carefully across the shoulders.

"Master Theron."

The two exchanged respectful nods.

"Everything is prepared."

Theron looked toward the glowing platform.

"Stable?"

"As stable as it has been for the last decade."

The old mage smiled faintly.

"I still dislike trusting magic older than recorded history."

Garrick chuckled.

"If it makes you feel better..."

"...none of us enjoy it either."

Adrian crouched beside the edge of the circle, studying the ancient runes carefully.

"They're different."

The old mage smiled.

"You noticed."

"They don't resemble modern enchantments."

"They shouldn't."

He gently brushed dust from one of the carvings.

"These were created long before our kingdoms existed."

Adrian frowned.

"Who built them?"

The mage slowly shook his head.

"No one knows."

Silence settled around the circle.

That answer somehow made the place even more unsettling.

Ruby carefully checked everyone's equipment one final time.

"Mana potions?"

Several voices answered together.

"Packed."

"Climbing gear?"

"Packed."

"Medical supplies?"

Another chorus of confirmation.

She finally looked toward Adrian.

"And your ego?"

Theron burst into laughter.

Adrian blinked.

"...Excuse me?"

Ruby smiled sweetly.

"Leaving that behind?"

Mira immediately covered her mouth to stop herself laughing.

Adrian placed one hand dramatically against his chest.

"I'll have you know..."

"...I possess a perfectly reasonable amount of confidence."

Theron wiped tears from his eyes.

"I've been waiting a week for someone to say that."

Even Garrick laughed.

The tension eased.

Exactly as Ruby intended.

The elderly mage stepped into the centre of the circle.

"Listen carefully."

Every conversation stopped.

"The teleportation array will take us directly to Floor Forty-Five."

He pointed toward the glowing runes surrounding them.

"Do not leave the platform until every member of the expedition has arrived."

"Teleportation sickness affects everyone differently."

He looked directly at Adrian.

"If you feel dizzy..."

"...sit."

"If you feel nauseous..."

"...sit."

"If you think you're perfectly fine..."

"...sit anyway."

Several veteran hunters nodded knowingly.

The old mage smiled.

"Experience has taught us that proud adventurers usually fall over first."

Theron stepped onto the platform.

One by one the others followed.

Forest Wardens.

Hunters.

Ruby.

Mira.

Lysara remained behind with Mirelle, offering Elena one final embrace before stepping away from the circle.

"Come home safely."

Elena smiled.

"I will."

Then...

She joined Adrian.

Ember quietly climbed back onto Adrian's shoulder, pressing himself against his neck as though refusing to be separated even for a moment.

The little red panda's heartbeat was surprisingly fast.

Adrian gently scratched behind one tiny ear.

"We've got this."

Ember answered with a determined little chirp.

The elderly mage slowly raised both hands.

Blue mana surged through every rune surrounding the platform.

One after another the ancient symbols awakened, flooding the clearing with brilliant sapphire light until the entire teleportation array shone like a second sun beneath the forest canopy.

The air became heavy.

Reality itself seemed to bend.

The sound of birds.

The rustling leaves.

The distant breeze.

Everything faded.

Adrian felt weightless.

Not as though he were falling.

As though the world had momentarily forgotten which direction was down.

The brilliant blue light intensified until it swallowed everything.

Then...

Silence.

Cold.

That was the first thing Adrian noticed.

Not the biting cold of snow.

The deep chill of ancient stone untouched by sunlight.

He slowly opened his eyes.

Gone were the towering trees of Verdant Reach.

Gone were birdsong and flowing streams.

Instead...

An immense cavern stretched endlessly before them.

Towering crystal formations erupted from the floor and ceiling alike, glowing softly with pale blue mana that cast shimmering reflections across perfectly smooth stone walls. Strange luminescent moss covered ancient pillars rising into darkness so deep that even the brightest lanterns failed to reveal the cavern's true height.

The air smelled of damp earth.

Old stone.

And magic.

Lots of magic.

Far in the distance...

Water dripped rhythmically into unseen pools.

Echoing.

Once.

Twice.

Again.

Every sound lingered.

As though the dungeon itself listened.

The teleportation circle beneath their feet slowly dimmed.

Behind them...

The way back had vanished.

Garrick took a slow breath.

His voice barely rose above a whisper.

"Floor Forty-Five."

No one spoke.

Even the veterans instinctively lowered their voices.

It felt wrong to shout here.

As though something unimaginably old slept somewhere beneath the mountain.

Watching.

Waiting.

Remembering.

Ember slowly climbed higher onto Adrian's shoulder.

His tiny ears twitched.

His amber eyes fixed upon the darkness stretching beyond the crystal caverns.

Then...

For the first time since Adrian had met him...

The little red panda growled.

It wasn't loud.

Barely more than a rumble.

But every member of the expedition heard it.

Theron slowly tightened his grip around Frostrender.

Garrick's smile disappeared.

Mirelle's expression grew solemn.

Because if Ember...

The friendliest creature in the sanctuary...

Was growling...

Then something deeper within the dungeon had already noticed them.
