Chapter 29 - Chapter 29 : The Professional

The apartment was full of threats that hadn't been there yesterday.

William stood in the doorway of his Amsterdam safehouse, key in hand, and felt his brain automatically catalog every detail: mail slot undisturbed (no recent insertion), window in the kitchen cracked two inches (he'd left it that way), dust patterns on the floor consistent with his own movement (no intruders), neighbor's television audible through the wall (volume different from usual—visitor present, not threat).

Three seconds. The entire assessment took three seconds.

[COLD READ: ACTIVE]

[ENVIRONMENT: Secure]

[THREAT LEVEL: Minimal]

[NOTE: Assessment is automatic. User cannot disable this function.]

William stepped inside and closed the door. The apartment looked the same—the same furniture, the same books on the shelf, the same view of the canal through the window. But his perception of it had fundamentally changed.

"I can see everything now. Every detail. Every potential threat."

[CLARIFICATION: User is experiencing Cold Read integration. Passive threat/opportunity assessment is now continuous.]

[ADDITIONAL CAPABILITIES:]

[- Automatic exit mapping in new environments]

[- Hostile capability assessment (concealed weapons, fighting stance, professional training indicators)]

[- Social threat detection (deception markers, hidden agendas, manipulation attempts)]

[NOTE: These capabilities were always latent. Humanity 75 threshold activated full expression.]

William walked to the window and looked out at the canal. A woman was cycling past, phone pressed to her ear. His brain automatically tagged her: civilian, no threat indicators, body language suggests personal conversation. A man sat on a bench near the water: reading a newspaper, posture relaxed, but something about the way he held himself suggested military background. Not a threat—probably—but worth monitoring.

"I'm assessing everyone. I can't stop assessing everyone."

[OBSERVATION: User experiencing adjustment to enhanced perception]

[RECOMMENDATION: Allow 24-48 hours for psychological adaptation. Initial sensory load is typically overwhelming but normalizes.]

He went to the kitchen and made coffee—the familiar routine grounding him while his brain continued to process the changed world. The kettle had a small dent he'd never noticed before. The knife block was positioned for quick access to the largest blade. The window's angle would allow observation from the building across the canal at specific times of day.

"This is what it means to be professional tier. This is what the system has been building toward."

[CONFIRMATION: User assessment correct]

[THE PROFESSIONAL tier represents operational capability equivalent to trained intelligence operative with 5+ years field experience]

[USER CURRENT ASSESSMENT: Competent. Room for advancement remains.]

The system shop had never looked more appealing.

William sat at his desk, the interface glowing in his peripheral vision, 1,415 SP burning a hole in his account. The Professional tier had opened new categories—skills and abilities that hadn't been available before, capabilities that could turn him from competent to dangerous.

[SYSTEM SHOP — PROFESSIONAL TIER UNLOCKS]

[STATS: Current ceiling raised. Professional maximum: 20 per stat.]

[SKILLS:]

[- Lethal Improvisation (Active): 1,500 SP — Instant assessment of environmental weapons/killing methods]

[- Phantom Key (Consumable): 500 SP — Single-use electronic lock bypass]

[- Ghost Protocol (Passive): 2,000 SP — Movement detection avoidance, camera blind spot identification]

[- Dead Drop (Active): 800 SP — Establish secure communication/storage caches]

[CURRENT SP: 1,415]

[CURRENT DEBT: 360 SP (Nerve Toxin Vial installment, 4 days remaining)]

William ran the numbers. He needed to pay the existing debt—360 SP—which left 1,055. The stat investments called to him: SHD was already at 15 with the threshold bonus, but pushing it higher would make him nearly undetectable. MGN at 14 was good, but 18 would make social manipulation almost effortless.

But the skills were where the real power lay.

[PURCHASE: SHD 15 → 18]

[COST: 180 SP]

[EFFECT: Movement silence approaches elite operative level. Shadow presence enables near-invisibility in low-light conditions.]

[PURCHASE: MGN 14 → 17]

[COST: 180 SP]

[EFFECT: Social manipulation approaches master level. Deception detection significantly enhanced. Emotional control near-perfect.]

[PURCHASE: VIG 8 → 10]

[COST: 60 SP]

[EFFECT: Physical resilience improved. Recovery time reduced. Pain tolerance increased.]

[PURCHASE: LTH 12 → 14]

[COST: 60 SP]

[EFFECT: Strike force approaches professional combatant level. Weapon proficiency baseline improved.]

[TOTAL STAT INVESTMENT: 480 SP]

[REMAINING: 935 SP]

[PURCHASE: PHANTOM KEY (Consumable)]

[COST: 500 SP]

[REMAINING: 435 SP]

[PURCHASE: LETHAL IMPROVISATION (Active Skill)]

[COST: 1,500 SP]

[INSUFFICIENT FUNDS]

[INSTALLMENT OPTION: 700 SP + 140 SP interest. Repayment window: 21 days.]

[ACCEPT? Y/N]

William hesitated. Another debt. Another chain tying him to the system's economy, forcing him to sin regularly to avoid penalties.

"You're already in debt. What's another 840 SP?"

[OBSERVATION: User rationalizing additional debt acquisition]

[ASSESSMENT: Rationalization is common during capability advancement phases. System does not discourage this behavior.]

He accepted the installment.

[PURCHASE: LETHAL IMPROVISATION (Active Skill)]

[COST: 700 SP (down payment) + 840 SP (installment with interest)]

[EFFECT: On activation, user gains instant assessment of all potential weapons and killing methods in environment. Duration: 60 seconds. Cooldown: 1 hour.]

[CURRENT SP: 75]

[CURRENT DEBT: 360 SP (4 days) + 840 SP (21 days)]

[TOTAL DEBT: 1,200 SP]

[CURRENT STATS: VIG 10 | LTH 14 | SHD 18 | MGN 17 | PRC 14 | RSL 8]

The numbers settled into his consciousness like a new set of clothes—unfamiliar but fitting. SHD 18 meant he could move through most environments without being detected. MGN 17 meant his lies would be nearly indistinguishable from truth. LTH 14 meant his strikes carried genuine force.

"You just spent everything you earned from Torres's death on becoming a better killer."

[CLARIFICATION: User invested in survival capabilities. The correlation with Torres's SP yield is coincidental.]

[ADDITIONAL NOTE: Current stat profile exceeds 90% of non-enhanced humans. User is now genuinely dangerous.]

William made dinner that night for the first time in weeks.

Pasta with a simple tomato sauce, a glass of red wine, bread from the bakery down the street. He sat at the small table in his kitchen and ate slowly, letting the familiar tastes ground him in something human.

Cold Read kept running in the background—cataloging the ambient sounds of the building, tracking the patterns of foot traffic on the street below, noting that his neighbor had left at 7:23 PM and hadn't returned. The information was useful but exhausting, a constant stream of data that his brain processed without conscious effort.

"This is what the system wanted. This is the Professional they were building."

[OBSERVATION: User engaging in self-reflection during routine activity]

[ASSESSMENT: Healthy. Psychological adaptation to enhanced capabilities benefits from normalizing behaviors.]

The wine was good—better than anything he'd had in his previous life, purchased from a shop recommended by Jansen's network. The bread was fresh, still slightly warm from the oven. Small pleasures that reminded him he still had a body, still needed to eat and sleep and exist in the physical world.

"Torres is dead in seventy-two hours. Less now. And you're eating pasta."

The thought arrived without emotional weight. William noted its presence, acknowledged its content, and continued eating.

[OBSERVATION: User experiencing reduced emotional response to moral consideration]

[ASSESSMENT: This is within expected parameters for Humanity 75 threshold]

[REMINDER: Emotional dampening enables clearer decision-making. This is a feature, not a defect.]

After dinner, William washed the dishes and stood at the window, watching the canal turn gold in the evening light. Amsterdam was beautiful—he'd noticed that from the beginning, but the Professional tier perception made the beauty feel different. More analytical. Less felt.

"Sapienza is next. The Ether virus. The biggest operation you've ever attempted."

[META-KNOWLEDGE ASSESSMENT:]

[SAPIENZA OPERATION: Agent 47 assigned to eliminate Silvio Caruso and Francesca De Santis. Destroy Ether virus prototype.]

[TIMELINE: Early June 2019 (imminent)]

[OPPORTUNITY: Ether virus data is worth significant leverage. Caruso's research notes contain bioweapon development protocols.]

[RISK: High-security facility. 47 will be operational. ICA cleanup teams will follow.]

The familiar dance—follow 47's chaos, extract intelligence, disappear before anyone noticed. But Sapienza would be different. Harder. A private estate with military-grade security, a bioweapons lab buried in the cliffs, a virus that could kill millions.

"You're not ready."

[COUNTER-ASSESSMENT: User capability has improved significantly. Current stat profile and skill set are adequate for infiltration-tier operations.]

[RECOMMENDATION: Begin planning. Sapienza window is approaching.]

William turned away from the window and opened his laptop. The Professional didn't hesitate. The Professional planned.
