Chapter 52 - Chapter 52 : Anomaly Detected

The Antwerp street market was crowded with Saturday shoppers, the kind of anonymous mass that made intelligence work simultaneously easier and more difficult. Easier because no one noticed a man browsing produce stalls while photographing a building across the street. More difficult because the noise, the movement, the sheer density of humanity created interference patterns that made threat assessment a constant challenge.

William was here for Providence—routine reconnaissance on a Belgian pharmaceutical executive suspected of feeding corporate secrets to competitors. The kind of low-stakes work that generated modest SP while maintaining his value as a contractor. The Olivia countdown sat at eight days in his peripheral vision, a constant reminder of the system's demand and his refusal.

[COERCION PROTOCOL: Day 6]

[PHYSICAL SYMPTOMS: Reduced (adaptation)]

[SP GAIN RATE: -10% (ongoing)]

[OLIVIA DEMAND: 8 days, 4 hours remaining]

He was examining a display of Belgian chocolates—maintaining cover while his camera captured the executive's office windows—when the system screamed.

Not a notification. Not an alert. A scream—a sound and sensation he'd never experienced, like standing too close to a high-voltage transformer, like the air itself had become wrong. His HUD flashed red, pulsing with an urgency that made his teeth ache.

[ANOMALY DETECTED]

[RANGE: Approximately 200 meters]

[CLASSIFICATION: System User — Phase Unknown]

[ALERT: Another User is within detection range]

William's hand froze on the chocolate box. The world seemed to narrow, the market noise fading to a distant hum as his mind processed the impossible notification.

"Another User. Someone else with the system. Someone like me."

[CONFIRMATION: Correct. Another individual bonded to a Morality Inversion System variant is operating within 200 meters of your current position.]

[NOTE: Detection is mutual. The other User's system is also alerting them to your presence.]

The ping pulsed in his awareness like a heartbeat—a direction indicator pointing northeast, through the crowd, toward a narrow street lined with antique shops. William's Cold Read activated automatically, scanning faces, postures, movement patterns. Nothing stood out. No one moved wrong. No one watched with the focused attention of a predator identifying prey.

But someone was there. Someone who could do what William could do. Someone who had killed to gain power, who had watched their Humanity drain away, who answered to a voice that demanded blood.

[THREAT ASSESSMENT: Unknown]

[OTHER USER CAPABILITIES: Unknown]

[OTHER USER PHASE: Unknown]

[OTHER USER INTENT: Unknown]

[RECOMMENDATION: Gather intelligence before engagement. Do not initiate contact until capabilities are assessed.]

William set down the chocolate box and began moving—not toward the ping, but perpendicular to it, toward a department store that would provide cover and multiple exits. His pace was casual, unhurried, the movement of a tourist who'd decided to explore a different part of the market.

The ping shifted. Tracked his movement. Maintained approximately 200 meters of distance.

"They're watching me. They know I'm here. They're moving to maintain range—not closing, not fleeing."

[OBSERVATION: Other User is employing similar tactics—maintaining distance, gathering intelligence]

[ASSESSMENT: Both parties are cautious. This may indicate approximately equal capability levels.]

[ALTERNATIVE ASSESSMENT: The other User may be baiting you. Caution is warranted.]

William entered the department store through the ground-floor entrance, moving past perfume counters and clothing displays with the practiced efficiency of someone who knew exactly where they were going. The ping faded slightly as walls intervened—200 meters became 220, then 240.

The other User was still tracking him. Still maintaining parallel movement. Still refusing to either engage or break contact.

"They're curious. Like I am. They want to know what I am without risking a confrontation."

William exited through a side door, crossed a service alley, and entered the train station through a staff entrance he'd identified during his morning reconnaissance. The ping flickered—300 meters now, the walls and distance creating interference.

He bought a ticket for Amsterdam at the automated kiosk, cash payment, no identity verification. The train was departing in seven minutes. The ping was fading, the other User falling behind as William put distance between them.

[RANGE: 400 meters... 500 meters...]

[SIGNAL: Degrading]

[ASSESSMENT: Other User is not pursuing. Contact broken.]

At 500 meters, the ping vanished entirely. William boarded the train, found a seat facing the platform, and watched through the window as the station receded. No one pursued. No one was watching.

But someone had been there. Someone was still out there. And the system had never mentioned that other Users existed.

The train to Amsterdam took an hour and forty minutes. William spent the first hour staring at his hands.

They were shaking.

Not the subtle tremor of fine motor impairment. Not the calculated micro-movements that Predator's Calm was supposed to suppress. His hands were shaking with honest, primitive fear—the kind of autonomic response that should have been impossible with his current buffs.

[OBSERVATION: User experiencing stress response exceeding Predator's Calm suppression parameters]

[ASSESSMENT: Encounter with another System User triggered primal threat response. This is normal—the presence of a rival predator activates survival instincts that predate conscious control.]

[NOTE: Predator's Calm suppresses 50% of stress response. The remaining 50% is currently expressing.]

"I didn't know I could still do this. I thought the system had taken this away."

[CLARIFICATION: The system has modified your stress responses, not eliminated them. Sufficient threat stimuli can still penetrate the suppression.]

[ADDITIONAL NOTE: The fact that another User triggered this response indicates your subconscious correctly assessed them as a significant threat.]

William pressed his palms against his thighs, forcing the trembling to stop through mechanical pressure. The other User was somewhere behind him now, still in Antwerp, still a mystery. But the questions flooding his mind were directed at something much closer.

"System," he said quietly, barely audible above the train's rhythm. "How many other Users exist?"

[QUERY: User count]

[RESPONSE: That information is not available at your current phase.]

"Why wasn't I warned that other Users existed?"

[QUERY: Advance warning]

[RESPONSE: Detection capability unlocks at Phase 4. You received detection capability. Context information unlocks at Phase 5.]

"Are they hostile?"

[QUERY: Other User disposition]

[RESPONSE: All Users operate independently. Conflict is statistically probable but not guaranteed. Preparation is recommended.]

The answers were clinical, evasive, technically accurate while revealing nothing useful. The system's specialty.

"You've been hiding this. You've been hiding that I'm not alone—that there are others like me, that we might encounter each other, that we might have to fight each other."

[OBSERVATION: User is experiencing trust degradation]

[ASSESSMENT: This is a predictable response to information revelation. The system provides information on a need-to-know basis. You now need to know.]

[RECOMMENDATION: Process this information. Prepare for future encounters. The Antwerp User may not be the only one you encounter.]

The train rolled through Belgian countryside, past farms and forests and small towns that had no idea what had just passed through their borders. William watched the landscape blur and thought about the implications.

Other Users. Other people bonded to systems like his. Other people who had killed to gain power, who had watched their Humanity drain away, who operated in the shadows of a world that didn't know they existed.

And the system had never mentioned any of them.
