Chapter 7 - controlled chaos

The forest moved first.

Not with sound.

Not with wind.

But with intent.

Kael felt it before he saw it—the subtle shift in pressure, the faint disturbance in the air that his mind instantly recognized as movement. The presences that had been trailing them were no longer hiding.

They had decided.

This was the moment.

"They're here," Kael said quietly, his voice steady, almost detached.

The others didn't respond immediately, but he could feel the change behind him. Their breathing grew sharper, their stance tightening as instinct took over. Fear was still there—but now it was focused.

Good.

Fear, when controlled, was useful.

The first creature emerged without warning, slipping between the trees with unnatural silence. Its body was low to the ground, muscles coiled, eyes locked onto its target. Then another followed. And another.

Four in total.

Just as he predicted.

Kael didn't move.

He watched.

Analyzed.

They weren't rushing in blindly. Their spacing, their angles—it was deliberate. Two positioned themselves in front, drawing attention. One shifted slightly to the left, trying to create an opening. The last remained further back.

Waiting.

Command unit? Or just cautious?

"…Stay behind me," Kael said.

There was no time for debate this time.

The monsters attacked.

Fast.

Coordinated.

The first one lunged straight for him, claws cutting through the air with lethal precision. Kael stepped forward instead of back, his body tilting just enough to let the attack pass by his side. In that same motion, his hand snapped out—

Contact.

For a fraction of a second, their eyes met.

Then the energy shifted.

"Absorption."

The creature's body stiffened violently as the process began, its form flickering unnaturally as energy started to tear away from it.

But Kael let go.

Immediately.

The creature dropped back, disoriented, weakened—but still alive.

Behind him, the swordsman shouted, confused. "Why didn't you finish it?!"

Kael didn't answer.

He was already moving.

The second and third creatures attacked together, one aiming high, the other low. This time Kael retreated half a step, guiding their trajectories instead of avoiding them completely. Their attacks nearly collided, forcing both to adjust mid-motion.

Disruption.

Exactly what he wanted.

"They rely on coordination," Kael said calmly, even as he moved. "Break that, and they're just animals."

The woman behind him tightened her grip on her staff. "And how do we do that?!"

Kael's eyes flicked briefly toward the first creature—the one he had partially absorbed.

It was still unstable.

Still trying to recover.

"Like this."

He moved instantly, closing the distance before it could react, his speed catching even himself off guard for a split second. His hand struck forward again, this time grabbing firmly.

The creature let out a sharp, distorted cry.

"Absorption."

This time, he didn't stop.

The process accelerated violently, the monster's body collapsing inward as its energy was forcibly drawn into Kael. The resistance was weaker now—its previous damage had made the difference.

Seconds later—

Nothing remained.

The voice echoed in his mind.

"Absorption complete."

Skill Acquired: Pack Coordination Disruption (Minor)

Kael's eyes sharpened.

"…Useful."

But there was no time to process further.

The remaining three creatures hesitated.

Just for a moment.

That was enough.

"They noticed," Kael murmured. "Now they're unsure."

Predators didn't like uncertainty.

It broke rhythm.

It created hesitation.

And hesitation—

Was death.

"Now!" Kael said sharply.

It wasn't a suggestion.

It was a command.

The swordsman reacted first, stepping forward with a shout, his blade cutting toward one of the distracted creatures. It wasn't a perfect strike—but it landed.

The monster recoiled.

The woman followed, raising her staff as a faint glow gathered at its tip before releasing in a small burst of energy that struck another creature's side. Not strong—but enough to disrupt it further.

"Keep moving!" Kael continued.

He didn't wait.

He entered the fight again, targeting the one that had stayed behind—the cautious one.

If there was any intelligence in the group—

It was there.

The creature reacted instantly, retreating instead of attacking, its movements sharper than the others. Its eyes locked onto Kael, analyzing him in return.

"…Yeah," Kael muttered. "You're different."

It lunged.

Faster than before.

More precise.

Kael barely avoided the strike, feeling the air shift violently as claws passed inches from his throat. His body twisted mid-motion, adjusting faster than he could consciously process.

Enhanced Reflexes.

Advanced Agility.

Everything aligned.

"Let's see how you handle this," Kael said.

He moved in again—but not directly.

He feinted.

Shifted.

Forced a reaction.

The creature adjusted instantly—

But that was the mistake.

"Got you."

Kael stepped inside its range and grabbed it.

This time, the resistance was immediate—and intense.

The creature shrieked, its body vibrating violently as the absorption began, far more aggressive than before.

"—Tch… you're fighting harder than the others…"

Kael tightened his grip, forcing the process.

His body trembled slightly under the pressure.

But he didn't let go.

"Absorption."

Seconds stretched.

The creature struggled—

Then broke.

Its form shattered into fragments of energy that surged into Kael all at once.

The silence that followed was heavy.

Then—

"Absorption complete."

Kael exhaled slowly.

Then looked up.

The remaining two creatures—

Were already retreating.

"…Smart," he muttered.

They had understood.

This was no longer a hunt.

It was a loss.

And they chose to survive.

Kael didn't chase them.

There was no need.

The forest grew quiet once more.

But this time—

It felt different.

Decided.

Behind him, the three adventurers stood frozen, their eyes locked onto him once again. But now, the fear had changed.

It wasn't uncertainty anymore.

It was recognition.

"…What… are you?" the swordsman asked again, his voice lower this time.

Kael didn't answer immediately.

He looked at his hand.

Then toward the deeper forest.

Then back at them.

"…Someone who's trying to get out of here," he said simply.

Silence followed.

Then the woman spoke, her voice quieter than before.

"…If you make it to Lyncrest…"

Kael's gaze shifted to her.

"…You should register at the Adventurer Guild," she continued. "People like you… don't stay unranked for long."

Kael's eyes narrowed slightly.

Unranked.

So it really worked like that.

A system.

A structure.

A place where strength had a name.

"…Then I guess that's where I'm going," he said.

For the first time—

A direction.

Not just survival.

A destination.

And somewhere beyond the forest—

A world that was finally starting to take shape.
