Chapter 88 - Chapter 86: Narrow Victory

The first leg of the Champions League quarter-finals began, and tonight, the Rhein-Neckar Arena was undoubtedly the focal point of all eyes in European football. Hoffenheim's opponent was the formidable Manchester City. Nagelsmann stood on the sidelines, his slightly leaning body taut and straight, his gaze fixed on the green pitch. His meticulously constructed 4-3-3 now faced its most brutal test. With a whistle, Manchester City's Sky Blues instantly surged forward.

De Bruyne and David Silva's midfield passing was like the cold glint of a blade, while Aguero and Sterling, like lightning bolts, repeatedly cut into Hoffenheim's defensive flanks. This was their classic possession-based tactic. Hoffenheim's young players gritted their teeth, every nerve in their bodies stretched to the limit.

"Hold your ground! Maintain the formation!" Nagelsmann's voice cut through the din, short and powerful.

Oliver felt his heart beat a little faster. He wasn't playing in his familiar right-winger position to attack the opponent, but rather at right-midfield. Tonight, he was more like a tireless workhorse. When Manchester City's attacks repeatedly bombarded their left flank, he and Amiri, like soldiers receiving orders, immediately dropped deep to defend. De Jong quickly dropped between Vogt and Maguire, a temporary three-center-back shield swiftly forming.

Oliver held his position firmly in the flank area, closely marking David Silva who was making diagonal runs, or ready to block long-range shots at any moment. His teammates beside him were equally focused: Vogt stuck to Aguero like a plaster, making every touch incredibly difficult for him; Maguire transformed into a towering pillar, roaring with every aerial duel, denying Manchester City's probing crosses.

In the first 20 minutes, the away team, Manchester City, only had one relatively successful cross!

The commentators were astonished: "Incredible! Hoffenheim chose a low block at home? Even more incredible, they're doing it so solidly! Especially the center-back pairing, Vogt's close marking and Maguire's aerial dominance, a perfect combination!"

In the 17th minute, Manchester City found a glimmer of space, and De Bruyne, from the edge of the box, unleashed a tricky long-range shot that rocketed towards the corner. Goalkeeper Baumann made a diving save, his fingertips barely deflecting the ball, which almost went out for a goal kick. However, the danger was not over; he immediately scrambled to his feet and restarted play. Using almost all his strength, a long ball soared over half the midfield!

Grillitsch was playing at right-winger today. He sprinted down the right flank like a cannonball, shrugging off the pursuing Delph, advancing over thirty meters, and then delivered a diagonal pass to Uth near the penalty spot! Uth, with his back to goal, firmly held off the strong Otamendi, then sharply twisted his body for a half-turn shot! Ederson reacted quickly and parried the ball away.

"Oh no! So close!" The Hoffenheim fans in the stands erupted in a huge sigh of regret, followed by applause for their home team.

Nagelsmann clapped his hands twice forcefully; although this counter-attack was unsuccessful, its clear route and astonishing efficiency were exactly what he wanted! Oliver gasped for breath as he tracked back, but his eyes lit up; the horn of counter-attack had already sounded. After more than 20 minutes of patient defending and probing, Hoffenheim's tentacles began to extend.

The commentator spotted the key: "Now, we can see that number 17, Oliver, is very active; he's not just operating on the right flank, Nagelsmann has given him a great deal of freedom."

In the 27th minute, Manchester City's left-back Delph once again pushed forward to assist, attempting to combine with Sterling. But this time, the space behind him was glaring like a torn wound. Just near the center circle, Oliver, playing as a right midfielder, suddenly turned his head from left to right, observing the ball while his peripheral vision took in the entire field. The huge open space on the left! He didn't hesitate, his body barely adjusting, and as the ball came from De Jong, he curled a horizontal long pass with the inside of his right foot! Like a guided missile, the ball traversed the entire width of the field, flying at high speed towards the vacuum zone on the left flank of the opponent's half!

Gnabry understood perfectly and cut inside at high speed! His run immediately drew away Walker, who was supposed to cover the left flank. Just as Walker's center of gravity shifted. Left-back Schulz, who had been lurking on the left, timed his overlapping run perfectly. Schulz received the ball and, without pausing, swept a cross towards the goal. Kompany's hurried clearance miraculously deflected off his foot towards the goal, grazing the post and flying out for a goal kick! The entire stadium instantly erupted, followed by thunderous applause!

"Absolutely brilliant! Oliver's switch of play! It instantly tore open Manchester City's defensive system! That vision, that technique, it's simply not like a winger playing in midfield for the first time!" The commentator marveled at Oliver's playmaking. Oliver's performance continued.

In the 35th minute, he played a brilliant one-two with De Jong on the right flank just outside Manchester City's box. Amiri cleverly surged forward from behind De Jong, received De Jong's through ball, burst into the box, and calmly slotted it into the far corner! The entire Rhein-Neckar Arena was instantly ignited! The Hoffenheim lads rushed excitedly towards the corner flag to celebrate.

However, the linesman calmly raised his flag. The brief jubilation was doused with cold water. VAR ultimately made a ruthless decision: at the moment De Jong passed the ball, Amiri was half a step ahead of Delph.

"It was offside! By a hair's breadth!" The commentator lamented, "Excellent tactical coordination, but unfortunately, the run started just a few tenths of a second too early!"

The goal was disallowed. Oliver rubbed his face hard, his eyes showing little frustration, only stronger fighting spirit. Nagelsmann vigorously waved his hands on the sideline, signaling his players to maintain focus. Three minutes later, the real test arrived. David Silva delivered a ball from the left at a 45-degree angle, aiming for Aguero and Sterling who were surging into the box. The two almost formed a two-pronged attack! But a massive figure rose like a mountain. Maguire!

Amidst the two attackers, Maguire leaped up as if he had springs on his feet, relying on his terrifying jumping ability and height, getting to the ball before anyone else, and heading it towards the center circle with a hammer-like header!

"Oh my god!" The commentator exclaimed, "Harry Maguire! Absolute aerial dominance! He single-handedly dealt with the threat from Manchester City's two top strikers! This is Hoffenheim's pillar of strength today!"

In the 42nd minute, Vogt, just ahead of the center circle, made a fierce and precise sliding tackle, dispossessing Sterling as he attempted to cut inside. He immediately got up, glanced forward, and threaded a through ball to De Jong who had dropped back to receive. The counter-attack switch was instantly pressed! De Jong, this calm midfield maestro, the only word that could ever describe him was 'calm'. The moment De Jong received the ball, his body was already oriented towards Manchester City's half. He saw the center, and he saw two figures, one on the left and one on the right, stabbing towards the opponent's flanks. Amiri was advancing through the middle, drawing defensive attention, while on the right, Oliver was accelerating at high speed.

Oliver began his move; he didn't run directly behind the opponent's right-back Walker, but instead made a highly deceptive run: He first feigned moving inwards towards the center, as if to receive a pass from De Jong or combine with Amiri. This movement made Walker pause for thought; Oliver was engaging in a mental battle with Walker. In a flash, just as Walker instinctively shifted his weight a small step towards the center, ready to cut off any potential through ball. Oliver's right foot suddenly pushed off the ground with force. He surged forward like an arrow released from a bow, abruptly changing direction from his feigned inward movement. He made a decisive and incisive diagonal run into the wide open space behind Walker! This feint and burst exploited Walker's split-second hesitation in judgment!

De Jong's observation and decision-making were equally top-notch. He saw Oliver's starting direction, and he saw Walker's momentary hesitation. More importantly, he saw the narrow and deadly channel left on the right flank of Manchester City's entire defense, caused by Delph's earlier attacking push and Amiri's pull on the left! The timing was in that fleeting moment. De Jong, even before Amiri could run in front of him and potentially block the passing lane, had already curled a precise, heavily spinning long-range over-the-top pass with the outside of his right foot!

The ball, as if it had eyes, spun at high speed, traveling over forty meters, soaring over Delph who was desperately tracking back but could only watch in despair. Finally, it landed accurately on the right front edge of the open space behind Manchester City's defense! That was precisely the position Oliver had reached through anticipation and speed! Oliver didn't even fully turn his head; he simply relied on his peripheral vision and anticipation of the ball's trajectory to firmly lock onto the landing spot.

"De Jong's switch! The target is... Oliver! Is this a one-on-one opportunity?!" The commentator's voice suddenly rose.

Walker only now realized he had been completely fooled. Guardiola, on the sidelines, anxiously patted his bald head, shouting at Walker to track back. Walker stopped abruptly, turned, and chased back at maximum speed! This English speedster was indeed fast, like lightning; the distance between the two visibly shortened. Oliver, while sprinting, precisely judged the ball's landing spot. He gently cushioned the ball forward with the outside of his right foot; this first touch was incredibly subtle, both absorbing some of the spin and downward force, and allowing the ball to roll a small step in his direction of travel.

Most importantly, there was no process of slowing down and adjusting; the entire sequence took less than a second! Oliver had no time to see how close Walker was to him, nor did he need to. Because behind him, that oppressive feeling belonging to Walker was already being transmitted!

One step to adjust?

No!

Oliver didn't even want to give his opponent that one step of adjustment time! Just as Walker was about to close in from behind and to the side, at that critical moment. When the ball landed perfectly in front of him, in the ideal position for a powerful shot. Oliver's right instep instantly straightened like a whip, and his calf muscles exploded with full force! He didn't even aim for an angle; the nearby Ederson had already instinctively blocked the near post. But Oliver saw it, he saw that tiny, fleeting "top corner" above the near post, where the goal and the post connected! This wasn't a blind, powerful shot, but a precise strike after calm observation.

Bang! The ball transformed into a white blur, carrying Hoffenheim's fury, almost grazing the fingertips of Ederson's left hand as he was halfway through his save, and smashed into the top corner of the near post!

A dead corner! A perfect, theoretical dead corner!

1-0!

"Hoffenheim's nuclear weapon!!! Oliver!!! First touch, then a shot! Gooooooooooal!!!!! Hoffenheim!! 1-0!!!" The commentator's hoarse shouts almost tore off the roof of the broadcast room.

"A brilliant play! One attack, just three passes! Only seven seconds! From Vogt's tackle to the ball hitting the net! De Jong's deadly through ball tore open the defense! Oliver's perfect off-ball run deceived Walker, but even more crucial was this last-ditch shot! Handling the ball at high speed, a first touch and a shot in one fluid motion. Facing Walker's chase, he didn't hesitate at all, choosing the most direct and deadly method: a thunderous shot! A perfect combination of power, angle, and timing! This is a world-class goal! Who would have thought this was Oliver's first time playing in midfield? He had always been playing as a right winger before!"

The moment the ball entered the net, Oliver didn't even hear the overwhelming cheers. He only felt a huge force coming from behind him. Because Walker, who was chasing back at high speed, had too much body inertia and collided heavily with him, as he had already completed his shot and relaxed his momentum. Oliver was knocked forward, stumbling a few steps, but his core strength allowed him to firmly regain his balance, only staggering for a short distance. He quickly got up, ignored the colliding Walker, spread his arms, and roared as he rushed towards the sideline. Letting his teammates engulf him in their wild joy! Rhein-Neckar Arena completely became a boiling ocean of number 17s! Nagelsmann punched the air on the sideline, kicking the turf hard, the breath he had held for over forty minutes finally exploding!

"Yes!!!" All the assistant coaches around Nagelsmann jumped up.

In the second half, Manchester City's offense was like a raging tide.

Guardiola substituted Fernandinho for the more attacking Gündoğan, and the formation changed to a frantic 3-1-6, with Delph moving back to the defensive midfield position, and Walker and Sane widening the play, pushing forward with full force to besiege. Hoffenheim's defense was under immense pressure.

In the second half, Oliver's position clearly dropped back, almost parallel to Kaderábek, and on his side, Sterling's impact was suffocating. This time, Oliver showed unexpected defensive toughness.

"We see Oliver actively assisting in defense; he's even chasing Sterling one-on-one!" The commentator was somewhat surprised.

Around the 60th minute, Sterling used his speed to shake off Kaderábek by half a step and burst into the penalty area. But just as he was about to adjust the ball to his left foot, Oliver clung to him like a shadow, using his body to block Sterling's position, forcing Sterling into a hurried cross that was cleared. Although slightly inferior in speed and explosiveness to the Manchester City winger, Oliver's physicality and good positioning repeatedly rendered Sterling ineffective. He and Gnabry both became regular auxiliary defenders alongside the full-backs. A solid 5-4-1 defensive formation layered its defense within the penalty area. (A/n: Basically Haramball)

Aerial defense in the backfield remained key. Manchester City's attacks almost always ended with a cross, but an insurmountable towering figure stood in front of the goal. That was Maguire. His aerial duels were still terrifyingly stable, like a precision-guided missile, always heading the ball to a safe area. Vogt was responsible for clearing danger at the far post, and De Jong protected the second ball.

In the 58th minute, a psychological battle even unfolded as Aguero fell in the penalty area after contact with Maguire, appealing for a penalty. Maguire immediately raised both hands, indicating with an innocent expression that the opponent was diving. Slow-motion replays showed that Maguire's positioning was extremely precise, maintaining a distance of about half a meters from Aguero throughout, with no additional forward movement of his body.

VAR confirmed: No foul!

"This can only be described as world-class defensive positioning!" The commentator exclaimed.

In the 68th minute, Manchester City used continuous passing to penetrate Hoffenheim's 30-meter zone. De Bruyne, like a magician, still delivered a precise through ball amidst multiple defenders, finding Sterling who had cut into the ribs. Sterling, without stopping the ball, immediately played a cut-back pass to the penalty spot! This was Manchester City's most dangerous move! Just as Gündoğan was about to arrive, a huge figure, like a giant axe splitting a mountain, appeared – it was Maguire! He executed a precise slide tackle, clearing the ball one-tenth of a second before Gündoğan could touch it. The deflected ball fell to Vogt's feet, and Vogt, without hesitation, cleared the ball with a long kick to the front field. A certain goal opportunity was completely stifled!

"A magnificent interception! Maguire! He's everywhere! He's omnipotent!!!!" The commentator's voice trembled.

Hoffenheim's defense withstood Manchester City's fiercest counterattack. The match entered its final fifteen minutes, the decisive moment. Nagelsmann also used his last substitution slots, bringing on fresh legs to strengthen the defense. Hoffenheim's overall formation became even more compact, forming three parallel deep barriers. Oliver's position even dropped back to near his own penalty area corner, and Uth directly retreated to De Jong's side, acting as a defensive midfielder.

The forward position was empty, a 5-5-0 Simeone formation stood in front of the goal. Now, Oliver's position was more like a sweeper next to the defensive midfielder and the first receiving point for counterattacks. 85% of his touches were in his own half. But every time he gained possession, he didn't blindly clear the ball with a long kick, but instead diligently looked for receiving points, trying to relieve pressure through simple passes, or seeking even a glimmer of a counter-attacking opportunity. He used his body and vision to diligently shield the ball, even if only to gain a few seconds. Time ticked by, second by second, each one incredibly long. Manchester City players finally started to get anxious.

In the 87th minute, Baumann gained possession in the six-yard box. He slowly walked towards one side of the goal, then slowly walked back to the other side, until the referee blew his whistle to warn him, only then unhurriedly taking a long kick. Every successful clearance elicited overwhelming cheers from the stands. Every time the referee awarded Manchester City a set piece, it was accompanied by deafening boos. The injury time board was raised: 4 minutes!

The final test came in the 2nd minute of injury time. Manchester City won a corner kick from the left. De Bruyne's cross had a tricky curve, finding Otamendi at the near post. Otamendi overpowered his marker, flicking a header towards the center of the six-yard box! In the chaotic crowd, a blue figure turned sideways to meet the ball and volleyed it. Aguero. The ball was only inches from the goal line! At that critical moment, a blue figure on the goal line threw himself to block it – Kaderábek! He almost used his entire chest to block Aguero's point-blank blast! Behind the crowd, Maguire and Vogt's massive figures firmly blocked Aguero and the subsequent Manchester City players' shooting lines and part of their vision. They created a precious half-second for Kaderábek to complete that crucial block!

At this moment, the air in the entire stadium seemed to solidify for a tenth of a second, then erupted into the wildest, most relieved roar since the start of the match!

"Goal-line clearance! Kaderábek! He saved Hoffenheim!" The commentator shouted hoarsely.

On the sideline, Nagelsmann's body, which had been tense for the entire match, finally swayed slightly. He covered his face with both hands, and when he lowered them again, he looked much more relaxed.

"Beep—beep—beep—!"

The final whistle finally blew! The incredibly long yet incredibly short first half of the battle was over.

Hoffenheim 1-0 Manchester City at home.

Rhein-Neckar Arena completely erupted, with applause, shouts, and team songs rising and falling, merging into a red ocean!

The players raised their arms and rushed towards their teammates, embracing each other, sweat mixing with excited tears streaming down their faces. Kaderábek was surrounded by his teammates, who patted his head and back. Oliver, De Jong, Maguire, Gnabry, and others hugged and celebrated, patting each other's backs. Nagelsmann stood still, taking a deep breath, a relieved yet combative smile on his face. He walked onto the field, hugging and high-fiving the players as they came off one by one. Ninety minutes of bloody struggle, ninety minutes of iron-willed defense, and that decisive, precision-guided, deadly strike. Completed by a midfield prodigy transformed from a forward, Hoffenheim created an incredible night. They narrowly won the first leg, and now, a more severe test awaits them at the Etihad.
