Chapter 3 - Under the same moon

The change was no longer something Aria could control.

It moved through her like a tide — powerful, unstoppable, ancient.

Her fingers slipped from Kael's grip as her body bent forward, a guttural sound ripping from her throat. The ground felt colder now, sharper against her skin. Every scent around her grew stronger… overwhelming.

Blood.

Fear.

Wet earth.

Pine.

And him.

His scent was everywhere.

It wrapped around her senses until she couldn't tell where she ended and he began.

A final surge of pain hit her — blinding and fierce — and then suddenly…

It was gone.

Silence rushed in to replace it.

Aria lifted her head slowly.

The world looked different.

Clearer.

Larger.

Alive in a way she had never experienced before.

Her paws — paws — pressed into the grass as she took her first shaky step. Moonlight shimmered across her silver-grey fur, making it glow faintly in the darkness.

A murmur spread through the clearing.

Kingston wolves stared in stunned disbelief.

Blackwell warriors looked just as surprised.

Even Alpha Kingston had gone still.

Because Aria's wolf was not small.

Not uncertain.

She stood tall for a first shift — strong, elegant, her presence carrying a quiet authority that felt older than her years.

But she didn't notice any of that.

Her attention was fixed on one thing.

Kael.

He had shifted too.

His wolf was massive. Dark as midnight, muscles coiled beneath thick fur, golden eyes burning with something dangerously close to pride.

He stepped closer.

Slowly.

Carefully.

As if approaching something precious… or unpredictable.

A warning growl rose from Aria's throat before she could stop it.

Not because she wanted to threaten him.

Because her wolf didn't understand what he was supposed to be.

Enemy.

Mate.

Both.

The confusion made her restless.

Kael stopped a few feet away, lowering his head slightly — not in submission, but in reassurance.

The gesture shocked everyone watching.

Blackwell heirs did not show softness.

Not in front of rivals.

Not in front of war.

Yet here he was.

Choosing calm over dominance.

Aria's wolf circled him once, cautious, curious. Every instinct screamed at her to memorize him — his scent, his strength, the steady rhythm of his breathing.

Mine.

The thought was clear now.

Terrifyingly clear.

A furious roar shattered the fragile moment.

Alpha Kingston strode forward, his aura slamming into the clearing like a storm.

"Enough!"

The single word carried command.

Kingston warriors instantly moved to surround Aria, creating distance between her and Kael.

Snarls erupted from the Blackwell side in response.

Tension snapped tight again.

"This bond will be broken," Alpha Kingston declared, his voice cold with finality.

"My daughter will not be tied to our enemy."

Aria's wolf whimpered softly.

Not out of fear.

Out of protest.

Across the clearing, Kael's wolf let out a low, dangerous growl.

His gaze never left her.

And for the first time since the shift began, Aria felt something new beneath the confusion and instinct.

A quiet, sinking dread.

Because deep down… she knew this was only the beginning.

The moon had marked them.

And nothing — not war, not hatred, not even family — would make it simple to walk away.
