Chapter 14 - The Weight Of Silence

The house felt strangely quiet.

Evelyn sat alone in the living room, staring at nothing in particular. The morning sunlight filled the room, but it did nothing to warm the heavy feeling inside her chest.

Stephanie was gone.

The thought kept repeating in her mind.

Gone.

She tried to convince herself that it didn't matter. Stephanie was seventeen now. Old enough to make her own decisions.

At least that was what she kept telling herself.

But something about the empty house felt wrong.

Her eyes drifted toward the hallway that led to Stephanie's room.

For years, she had avoided that room unless necessary.

Now she found herself walking toward it without even realizing.

The door creaked softly as she pushed it open.

Everything looked almost the same.

The small bed.

The books on the table.

The quiet air.

But the room felt hollow… like something important had been taken away.

Evelyn stepped inside slowly.

Her eyes moved across the walls until they stopped on the old drawing pinned there.

A little girl had drawn it years ago.

A small family holding hands.

Evelyn remembered the day Stephanie had shown it to her, smiling proudly.

"Mum, look what I made!"

Back then, Evelyn had barely paid attention.

Now the memory pressed painfully against her chest.

Why did she leave?

The question echoed in her mind.

Was it something she said?

Something she did?

Or something she never did at all?

"Still thinking about her?"

The voice behind her made Evelyn turn.

Her husband leaned against the doorframe, arms folded casually.

"She's seventeen," he continued. "Not a child anymore."

Evelyn frowned slightly.

"So?"

"So maybe she just wanted to go out and enjoy life," he said with a shrug. "Relax a little."

Evelyn's eyes narrowed.

"She didn't even tell anyone where she was going."

He chuckled lightly.

"Maybe she went to see some boyfriend."

The words hit Evelyn like a spark on dry wood.

"What?" she snapped.

He raised his hands slightly.

"What? She's seventeen. That's not strange."

Evelyn's anger flared instantly.

"That's not funny."

He sighed, clearly annoyed.

"Then what do you expect me to say?"

Evelyn stared at him silently.

He continued,

"You're acting like this is some huge mystery."

His voice hardened slightly.

"Let's be honest here, Evelyn."

Her stomach tightened.

"You haven't exactly been kind to that girl," he said bluntly.

Evelyn's eyes flashed.

"What is that supposed to mean?"

He gave a short laugh.

"Oh come on."

"You barely talk to her."

"You snap at her all the time."

"You treat her like she's a problem you're forced to live with."

Each word landed heavier than the last.

Evelyn felt her chest tighten.

"How do you expect her to react?" he continued. "Did you think she would just stay here forever smiling?"

Evelyn looked away.

For the first time, she didn't have an answer.

The silence in the room grew heavy.

Her husband pushed himself off the doorframe.

"Like I said," he muttered, walking away, "she's seventeen."

"If she left, she probably had a reason."

His footsteps faded down the hallway.

Evelyn remained standing in the quiet room.

Her eyes slowly moved around the space again.

The empty bed.

The quiet desk.

The drawing on the wall.

For the first time in years, something unfamiliar crept into her heart.

Guilt.

And beneath it…

fear.

Where are you, Stephanie?

—————

Stephanie is gone.

No goodbye. No explanation.

Just an empty room… and a mother forced to face the truth she's been running from.

Sometimes, the scariest thing isn't losing someone

it's realizing why they left.
