Chapter 46 - Chapter 46: The Truth Behind the Smile

The silence after he left didn't feel empty.

It felt loaded.

Like something had been dropped between us and neither of us was ready to touch it.

I stared at Kairo.

He didn't look away.

That was the problem.

"You're not going to explain?" I asked finally.

A pause.

Then—

"…Not like this."

"That's not an answer."

"It is," he said quietly.

My patience snapped a little.

"No, it's not. Your ex-lover just walked in here like he owns the air, called me a substitute, and then implied I'm misunderstanding my own situation—"

"He is not my ex-lover."

That stopped me.

"…What?"

Kairo exhaled slowly.

"Listen carefully."

I didn't like how serious he suddenly sounded.

"I never chose him."

Silence.

I blinked.

"…Okay, that's a lie."

"It isn't."

"He literally walked in like he knows you intimately."

Kairo's eyes sharpened.

"That doesn't mean what you think it means."

"Then what does it mean?"

Another pause.

This time longer.

Like he was deciding what to cut open first.

Then—

"He is an omega from a contracted alliance line."

I frowned.

"…That sounds political."

"It is."

My annoyance softened slightly.

So not romance?

Good.

Bad.

Confusing.

"Explain," I said.

Kairo didn't hesitate now.

"He was chosen as a future partner arrangement by the elders. A compatibility candidate. Not someone I wanted."

I stared at him.

"You're telling me your family tried to arrange your marriage before me."

"Yes."

"And you just… let him walk in like that?"

"I ended it."

"When?"

"Before you arrived here."

That hit differently.

I narrowed my eyes.

"So why does he act like he owns you?"

Kairo's jaw tightened slightly.

"Because he refuses to accept it."

Of course.

The elegant psycho type.

Great.

I sighed.

"So I'm not the replacement omega?"

Silence.

That silence was worse than words.

"Kairo."

He looked at me then.

Finally honest.

"You were never a replacement."

My chest tightened again.

I didn't like how often that kept happening.

"Then what am I?"

The question came out softer than I intended.

Kairo didn't answer immediately.

He stepped closer instead.

Slow.

Careful.

Like I might disappear if he rushed.

"That's what I didn't want to explain badly," he said.

"Try anyway."

A beat.

Then—

"You are the one I chose."

The room went still.

Even my thoughts paused for half a second.

Then I scoffed automatically.

"Wow. Dramatic."

"I'm serious."

"I noticed."

But my voice wasn't steady anymore.

Because this wasn't like the usual possessive alpha talk.

This felt… deliberate.

Intentional.

Heavy.

"You're telling me," I said slowly, "that everything—the marriage, the arrangement, the contract—was still your choice?"

"Yes."

"And him?"

"Rejection."

I stared at him.

Trying to find the lie.

There wasn't one.

Which made it worse.

"…So why didn't you just say that from the beginning?"

Kairo's gaze dropped briefly.

"For control."

I blinked.

"That is not comforting."

"I didn't want interference."

"From him?"

"From anyone."

The silence this time felt different.

Less confusing.

More revealing.

I exhaled slowly.

"So he's not my rival."

"No."

"…He's just annoying."

A faint pause.

Then—

"Yes."

That almost made me laugh.

Almost.

But something still didn't sit right.

"So why does he act like he still has claim?"

Kairo's expression darkened slightly.

"Because he believes bonds cannot be broken."

I froze.

"Bonds?"

Kairo hesitated.

Then said it anyway.

"He thinks what we were supposed to have is still binding."

That word landed heavier than it should've.

Supposed to.

Not real.

Not chosen.

Something assigned.

I looked down for a second.

Processing.

Then—

"…So what you're saying is," I said slowly, "he's not your lover, he's not my replacement, and I'm not a stand-in."

"Yes."

I looked back up at him.

"…Then what am I supposed to be insecure about?"

Silence.

Then Kairo said something that made my brain stop again.

"Nothing."

I blinked.

"That's not how jealousy works."

"I know."

I frowned.

"So I suffered for nothing."

A pause.

Then—

"You assumed."

That made me glare at him.

"That's your defense?"

"It's the truth."

I pressed a hand to my forehead.

"This world is exhausting."

Kairo's gaze softened slightly.

"You thought I would choose him."

I hesitated.

"…Yes."

"And I didn't."

I met his eyes again.

"No. You didn't."

Silence.

This time, it didn't feel tense.

It felt… grounding.

Then I said quietly,

"You could've told me sooner."

"I tried."

"I was panicking."

"I noticed."

I shot him a look.

"That doesn't help."

A faint pause.

Then, softer—

"You didn't leave."

That again.

Always that.

I exhaled.

"…Yeah."

Silence settled between us again.

But it wasn't the same as before.

Something had shifted.

Not broken.

Not healed.

Just clarified.

And then, from outside the room, faint footsteps passed.

The omega's scent lingered in the air like a reminder.

But now it didn't feel like a threat.

It felt like noise.

I looked at Kairo.

"So," I said slowly.

"I embarrassed myself over nothing."

Kairo didn't deny it.

"…Yes."

I groaned.

"Great."

Then I paused.

Looked at him again.

"…You enjoyed that a little, didn't you?"

His silence was answer enough.

I narrowed my eyes.

"Kairo."

A faint hint of amusement.

Barely there.

"No."

Liar.

And for the first time that night—

I didn't feel like I was losing something.

I felt like I finally understood where I stood.

And that… was worse for my pride than jealousy ever was.
