In the glittering world of high society, where appearances are everything and whispers carry more weight than truth, Olivia Sinclair has made a name for herself as a woman who can become anyone—except, perhaps, herself. When she is hired to pose as the fiancée of the elusive Duke of Montgomery, Sebastian Thorne, the arrangement seems simple: a carefully staged romance designed to fend off relentless matchmaking and protect the Duke’s independence. For Olivia, it’s just another role. For Sebastian, it’s a necessary inconvenience. But what begins as a calculated deception soon spirals into something neither of them anticipated.

Chapter 1 - CHAPTER ONE

Olivia Sinclair, a woman with flaming red hair and a mind as sharp as her wit, looked around the ballroom with pursed lips. Her gaze fell on the Duke of Montgomery, Sebastian Thorne, a man as commanding as his title. He stood stiffly beside the fireplace with a perpetual scowl on his face.

Olivia was not up for dancing or polite chat. She came there seeking a job. An extremely precise, albeit rather ludicrous job which is to play the phony fiancée. It all began with a frantic plea from Sebastian's eccentric aunt, Lady Lavinia. The Duke, it appeared, was under constant pressure to marry.

Many were circling, eager to claim the wealthy, unmarried Duke for their daughters. Lady Lavinia, a believer in pure love and a staunch opponent of loveless weddings, hatched a daring plan like a phony engagement to deter marriage-hungry mothers and their socialite children. Olivia, an actress renowned for her versatility and fast thinking, was her chosen weapon.

Olivia took a deep breath, smoothing down her emerald green gown before approaching the Duke. His scowl grew as he saw her approach.

"Your Grace," she started, her tone pleasant but strong.

"May I have this dance?" She asked with a smile on her face.

Sebastian's eyes narrowed. "Miss Sinclair, I believe we haven't been formally introduced." He said nervously.

"True," Olivia conceded, a slight smile on her lips.

"But perhaps a dance would be the perfect opportunity to rectify that oversight?" She said nervously.

Sebastian paused. He wasn't known for his waltzing abilities, and Olivia, with her fiery hair and confident demeanor, looked like a potential whirlwind on the dance floor, but the desperation in Lady Lavinia's eyes as she described the scenario resonated in his head.

"Very well," he agreed, extending his arm stiffly.

Olivia watched him carefully as they walked to the dance floor. He was tall and broad-shouldered, with dark hair that was beginning to show flecks of silver at the temple. His stormy green eyes revealed a trace of fatigue.

"You seem less than thrilled about this dance, Your Grace," Olivia said casually."

Let's just say waltzing isn't exactly my forte," he stated sternly.

Olivia chuckled. "Consider this a crash course. Lead with your left foot and don't worry about stepping on my toes." She whispered.

Despite his worries, Olivia ended up loving the dance. Sebastian, after he relaxed a little, proved to be an incredibly good student. Olivia was a little disappointed when the music stopped.

"Thank you for the dance, Miss Sinclair," Sebastian murmured, his voice tinged with a little irritation.

Olivia smiled. "Your Grace, the pleasure is entirely mine. Now, do you have any experience with mothers wielding their beautiful daughters as social climbing weapons?"

Sebastian let out a shocked laugh, the first genuine smile Olivia had seen from him that night.

"Perhaps you can teach me a thing or two about that as well, Miss Sinclair." He suggested.

And thus began their ruse. Olivia, with her improvisation skills and quick wit, became Sebastian's shield. She engaged the matchmaking mothers with false kindness and steely determination, thwarting their attempts to bring their daughters closer to the Duke.

Sebastian, who was initially uneasy in public, relaxed with Olivia's help. They learned to waltz in perfect harmony, their movements reflecting a growing ease with one another.

Rumors of the Duke's scandalous engagement circulated rapidly. Many were initially furious, and began hunting for greener pastures. The burden on Sebastian eased, and a newfound friendship blossomed between him and Olivia.

One evening, after a particularly demanding social event, Olivia and Sebastian found themselves alone at the balcony.

"You know," Sebastian whispered quietly, "this whole fake fiancée thing isn't as bad as I thought it'd be."

Olivia met his eyes, and her pulse skipped a beat. "I wouldn't call it an unpleasant thing," she confessed quietly.

Sebastian pushed in closer, his fingers brushing against her own. Olivia caught her breath. Was this part of the action? Or was there something more going on between them? She questioned herself repeatedly.

A loud crash from the garden below interrupted the moment. They both ran to the balcony railing and found a woman unconscious on the ground, with moonlight glinting off a silver object beside it written "A little golden arrow."

"Someone is attempting to send a message," Olivia said, her voice tense with fear.

The story of the undercover cupid has recently taken a dark turn. The phony involvement was more than just a social game. Someone was determined to stop them. Olivia and Sebastian planned to dive deeply into a real mystery.

Olivia wasted no time in grabbing Sebastian's arm. "We need to go down there. Please kindly check for a pulse and see if she's really okay." She exclaimed.

They hurried down the back stairs, adrenaline pumping through their veins. Olivia knelt down, relieved to discover a faint but steady pulse. The young woman, clothed in a basic maid's uniform, appeared very pale.

"Do you recognize her?" Sebastian whispered, his gaze scouring the surrounding shadows.

Olivia shook her head, her attention shifting to the unconscious woman. "No, but she looks scared." Olivia exclaimed.

They carefully raised the woman and carried her inside, finding an unoccupied room to lay her down in. Sebastian, ever the Duke, dispatched a covert note to the estate physician as Olivia studied the golden arrow. It was wonderfully constructed and unlike anything she had seen before. The emblem inscribed on it looked like a heart with wings, yet something about it felt sinister.

The entrance of the physician, a compassionate but stern elderly gentleman named Dr. Davies, provided some respite. He checked the young woman's vitals and reported that she had received a blow to the head but would be fine after some rest. He confirmed that the arrow had not pierced deeply enough to cause major harm. However, the unusual symbol baffled him.

"I've never really seen anything like it," he said, rubbing his beard so thoughtfully. "Perhaps it's some sort of hunting trophy gone wrong, right?" He questioned.

Olivia and Sebastian exchanged doubtful looks.

"A hunting accident in a remote area of the estate gardens, with a strange emblem attached? It felt staged." Sebastian lamented.

As Dr. Davies cared for the young woman, Olivia and Sebastian continually looked at each other, their original friendship replaced by a renewed sense of duty.

"Someone wanted to hurt her," Olivia remarked, her voice stern. "And maybe send a message to us as well." She exclaimed.

"But why?" Sebastian frowned. "Who would target a poor maid and leave this arrow as evidence?" He asked.

Olivia took up the arrow and turned it over in her hand.

"Maybe the target wasn't the maid," she responded. "Maybe it was someone who saw something they weren't supposed to." She concluded.

The parts started to fall into place. The "covert cupid" may not have worked in their favor after all.

"Perhaps someone did not want the false engagement to succeed, and this attack served as a warning." Olivia explained.

"We need to find out who this girl is and why she was in the garden tonight," Sebastian said, his voice stern.

"And we need to find out who owns this arrow." He added.

Their fictitious relationship had turned into a genuine investigation, and the barrier between act and reality had blurred. Olivia, the actress, was dragged into an exciting journey that would reveal a terrible secret and force her to confront not just the truth about the hidden cupid but also her burgeoning affections for the stoic Duke.

The following morning, word of the attacked maid, Clara, spread like wildfire around the sprawling Montgomery estate. Olivia and Sebastian, their jovial demeanor replaced with a determined sparkle in their eyes, found themselves at the center of the investigation.

Mrs. Higgins, the head housekeeper, confirmed Clara's status as a new recruit, quiet and conscientious with no known adversaries.

"Poor girl," she said, sighing and shaking her head.

"Must have been at the wrong place at the wrong time." Mrs. Higgins exclaimed.

Olivia wasn't convinced. Clara's unconscious presence in the isolated garden at night seemed too convenient to be a coincidence. She and Sebastian resolved to take things into their own hands.

Sebastian used his position to question the guards monitoring the estate. Their responses were unsurprising as they claimed that it was a peaceful night with no extraordinary activity.

Olivia, on the other hand, became friends with another maid who was looking after Clara and learned a little more. Clara appeared to be particularly delighted about a new "secret admirer" who sent her little, heartfelt gifts like hearts with wings.

The symbol on the golden arrow just clicked into position.

"The "covert cupid" wasn't trying to bring Olivia and Sebastian together, rather they were after Clara. But why?" Olivia asked.

"Who was this strange admirer who was eager to use violence?"

"Could it be a man or. Woman?" Olivia imagined.

Olivia and Sebastian resolved to investigate more, fueled by a fresh feeling of urgency.

Sebastian, using his informant network, discovered an interesting detail about a local craftsman noted for his fine metalwork who had gotten an unusual request a few weeks previously. The commissioned item's description was identical to the golden arrow.

Following this clue, they entered the lively village hub that surrounded the estate. The craftsman, a wiry man with calloused hands and a guarded expression, verified their fears. He'd been approached by a cloaked individual with a disguised voice who'd asked for the manufacture of many "arrows of affection" which was a strange request with which he unwillingly complied, fearful for his job.

The cloaked man's description, however, remained frustratingly ambiguous. Their only clue was a description of a striking silver ring on the man's hand. The hunt felt like chasing shadows, but a ray of hope appeared when they returned to the estate. Fortunately, Clara had recovered consciousness. Though disturbed, she told a terrifying story.

The "admirer," who showered her with gifts, had suddenly revealed herself, her motives dark and obsessed.

"It's even a woman," Olivia exclaimed.

She had threatened her, asking that she stay away from a specific area of the garden, the same place where she had been attacked. They discovered a silver ring on her finger, hidden beneath a bandage, that matched the craftsman's descriptions.

Suddenly, the parts of the puzzle began to fit together. Someone with access to the estate and a perverted sense of affection was pursuing Clara.

The phony engagement seems to have created a wrench in their plans, and the attack served as a harsh warning, but who might it be?

The suspicions included resentful servants, scorned suitors, and even someone closer to home, possibly with a secret grievance against the Duke or his family. Olivia imagined.

Olivia and Sebastian understood that they had to walk carefully. The next step could be critical, not only for identifying the perpetrator but also for their own protection. With a similar determination on their faces, they decided to set a trap.

Olivia would use her acting skills to imitate Clara, drawing the wrongdoer out. Sebastian, with a squad of trustworthy guards discretely stationed across the chosen region, would be prepared to apprehend them.
