Chapter 40 - Episode 40 : The Heart of Orinthal

"The heart of a civilization is not its machines. It is the reason its people refuse to abandon one another."

The Final Confrontation

The battlefield had become a wasteland of fire and broken steel.

Aurion Citadel stood behind the allied armies, damaged beyond recognition yet still alive.

The walls were fractured.

The towers were burning.

The streets were filled with wreckage.

But the Restoration Pulse continued.

THOOM.

Every three seconds, bronze light passed through the city.

A broken wall repaired itself.

A damaged Bronze Titan rose again.

A shattered defense turret reassembled.

The city refused to die.

At the center of the battlefield stood AZRAK-9.

Its armor was cracked.

Its weapons were damaged.

Its enormous crimson core was exposed.

Opposite it stood the First Defender.

Behind the ancient guardian stood the three heirs.

Dorion.

Lirion.

Sorion.

The allied armies gathered behind them.

Nordfrost.

Sunscorched Reveland.

The Hunters of the Serpent Wastes.

The Veilkeepers.

The Ironhide Clan.

The Iron Legion.

And Bardin of the Shrouden Swamps.

The enemy army still surrounded them.

But the tide had changed.

AZRAK-9 knew it.

The calculations were no longer favorable.

The Heart of the Enemy

AZRAK-9 opened its chest.

Its crimson core began to spin.

Every weapon remaining in its body powered up.

The machine had one final option.

A direct strike against the heart of Aurion Citadel.

"PRIMARY OBJECTIVE."

"DESTROY THE ORINTHAL RESTORATION CORE."

"NO FURTHER DELAY."

The machine raised both arms.

The battlefield trembled.

Commander Cassian shouted:

"EVERYONE!"

"PROTECT THE CITY!"

The allied armies charged.

The Final Assault

The Nordfrost warriors slammed into the Omnission front line.

The Ironhide Clan crashed into the enemy from the east.

Sunscorched Reveland crawlers raced through the battlefield, their mechanical limbs carrying their warriors across the broken ground while their mounted plasma blades tore through enemy formations.

The Hunters of the Serpent Wastes struck from the cliffs.

The Veilkeepers vanished into the enemy lines.

The Iron Legion fired every remaining weapon.

Bardin played.

The music became louder.

The Restoration Pulse answered.

THOOM.

The entire city seemed to move as one.

The Three Heirs

Dorion raised his shield.

The Guardian's Shield Sigil expanded into a massive bronze barrier.

AZRAK-9 fired.

The impact struck the barrier.

Dorion was pushed backward.

His boots carved trenches through the ground.

The shield began to crack.

Dorion roared.

"NOT ONE STEP!"

Behind him, the defenders gathered.

The shield held.

Lirion raised his hands.

Every remaining defense system in Aurion Citadel connected to him.

The city's artillery fired.

Bronze Titans fired.

Iron Legion cannons fired.

The entire Citadel attacked as a single machine.

The barrage struck AZRAK-9's exposed core.

Its armor began to collapse.

Sorion descended beneath the city.

The Heart of Orinthal waited in the darkness.

It was not a weapon.

It was not an artificial intelligence.

It was the preserved memory of Orinthal itself.

The history of the city.

The names of its founders.

The voices of its citizens.

The memory of every generation that had built, defended, and rebuilt the Citadel.

Sorion placed his hand upon the Heart.

"I remember."

The Heart answered.

THOOM.

The Restoration Pulse became stronger.

Bardin's Song

Bardin's frog exo-suit was nearly destroyed.

One of his rear mechanical arms had stopped moving.

His violin had only two strings left.

His percussion mechanism was damaged.

Still...

he continued.

The melody spread through the city.

The exhausted stood.

The frightened raised their weapons.

The engineers returned to their work.

The soldiers found the strength to take one more step.

Bardin played faster.

The Heart of Orinthal began to resonate.

The Restoration Pulse and the melody became one.

THOOM.

The First Defender Strikes

The First Defender moved.

The ancient guardian crossed the battlefield in a single tremendous charge.

AZRAK-9 raised its weapons.

The guardian's shield absorbed the first barrage.

Dorion joined the charge.

Lirion redirected the Citadel's remaining power.

Sorion opened the Heart.

The allied armies surged forward.

The First Defender raised its ancient sword.

AZRAK-9 fired its final weapon.

The guardian struck.

The sword pierced the crimson core.

For one moment...

everything stopped.

Then the core shattered.

A tremendous wave of red energy exploded across the valley.

AZRAK-9's body froze.

Its weapons fell silent.

Its enormous frame began to collapse.

The machine lowered its head.

"OMNISSION PROTOCOL..."

"FAILED."

The First Defender stood before it.

AZRAK-9 looked at the ancient guardian.

"ORINTHAL..."

"...SURVIVES."

Then the Apex Omnission Engine fell.

The ground shook beneath its death.

The Omnission Host Falls

Across the battlefield, every corrupted machine stopped.

Steel Crawlers froze.

Null Sentinels collapsed.

Memory Reavers went dark.

The endless army that had surrounded Aurion Citadel became silent.

Then the Iron Legion opened fire.

The allied armies charged.

The final battle began.

Not against an organized army.

Against a defeated one.

One by one, the remaining Omnission machines were destroyed.

The siege was over.

The Silence Above

Then...

the sky changed.

The stars disappeared.

A darkness opened far above the battlefield.

Every soldier looked upward.

The First Defender immediately recognized it.

"Oblivion."

The darkness did not attack.

It simply watched.

The ancient force had witnessed the fall of AZRAK-9.

It had expected the city to be broken.

Instead...

the city had united.

The Heart of Orinthal was awake.

The heirs had awakened.

The armies of the world had stood together.

The darkness remained for several moments.

Then it began to withdraw.

Not defeated.

Not destroyed.

Simply retreating.

The First Defender raised its sword.

"Why are you leaving?"

The darkness answered from beyond the sky.

"Because this world is not ready to be forgotten."

The darkness receded.

"Not yet."

The stars returned.

One by one.

The night sky opened again.

Oblivion had retreated.

The war was over.

Victory

For several seconds...

no one moved.

Then a single Nordfrost warrior raised his axe.

"WE WON!"

The cry spread across the battlefield.

The Ironhide Clan roared.

The Sunscorched warriors shouted.

The Veilkeepers emerged from the shadows.

The Hunters raised their weapons.

The Iron Legion fired their remaining cannons into the sky.

Aurion Citadel erupted in celebration.

Citizens poured into the streets.

Engineers embraced one another.

Children climbed onto the restored Bronze Titans.

Soldiers who had fought for days finally dropped their weapons.

Some laughed.

Some cried.

Some simply stood in silence, unable to believe they were still alive.

The Restoration Pulse continued.

THOOM.

This time...

it sounded like a heartbeat celebrating victory.

The Feast of the Living

The allied reinforcements did not leave immediately.

The gates of Aurion Citadel opened.

Nordfrost cooks prepared enormous fires.

Sunscorched Reveland brought water, spices, and desert provisions.

The Iron Legion distributed preserved supplies.

The Ironhide Clan opened the Forge District and began repairing weapons for anyone who needed them.

The Veilkeepers quietly appeared in places where they were needed.

The Hunters of the Serpent Wastes sat on rooftops and watched the stars return.

The city had been destroyed.

Then repaired.

Now it celebrated.

Bardin's Victory Song

Bardin stood in the central plaza.

His frog exo-suit was battered.

His violin was nearly destroyed.

His rear percussion arms were damaged.

But he still had one song left.

He played.

This time...

the song was not for courage.

It was for victory.

The people danced.

The warriors sang.

The children laughed.

Even the Ironhide elders began stomping their feet to the rhythm.

Bardin smiled.

"The city lives."

Final Scene

Thomarion stood upon the restored Founder Wall.

Beside him stood Dorion, Lirion, and Sorion.

Below them, Aurion Citadel celebrated.

The First Defender stood silently near the battlefield, watching the people.

Lirion looked toward the remains of AZRAK-9.

"What happens now?"

Thomarion looked toward the stars.

"Now..."

"We rebuild."

Dorion looked at the ruined walls.

"Again?"

Thomarion smiled.

"Again."

Behind them, the Heart of Orinthal pulsed.

THOOM.

The city had survived.

AZRAK-9 had fallen.

Oblivion had retreated.

And for the first time in generations...

Aurion Citadel celebrated a victory.
