Chapter 50 - Episode 50 : Beneath the Broken Bridge

A Farewell to Ash Hollow

The morning sun rose over Ash Hollow with a warmth the villagers had not felt in many years.

The restored Battery Core pulsed steadily beneath the old relay house.

Water once again flowed through the irrigation channels.

The grain mill turned without interruption.

Street lanterns, dark for generations, now glowed with a gentle bronze light even after dawn.

Children laughed as they chased one another through the village square.

For the first time in decades...

Ash Hollow no longer felt forgotten.

It felt alive.

The expedition gathered near the eastern gate.

Villagers carried baskets of bread, smoked meat, dried fruit, fresh vegetables, medicinal herbs, and carefully wrapped Battery Crystals salvaged from abandoned workshops.

The village elder stepped toward Dorion.

"You came here as strangers."

He looked around at the smiling villagers.

"You leave as friends."

Dorion bowed respectfully.

"We only reminded the road where to find you."

The elder smiled.

"And reminded us that the road still remembers."

Before departing, Sorion quietly walked to the old monument of Ember's Crossing.

He placed one hand upon the weathered bronze.

No visions came.

Only a quiet feeling.

The land...

was finally at peace.

Across the Forgotten Plains

The Founder's Road continued east.

The farther they traveled from Ash Hollow, the older the world became.

Stone mile markers leaned beneath flowering vines.

Collapsed relay towers rested like sleeping giants among rolling hills.

Ancient orchards stretched for kilometers, their trees still bearing fruit despite centuries without care.

The expedition harvested only what they needed.

Before leaving each grove, Ironhide craftsmen carefully pruned damaged branches while villagers from Ash Hollow planted fresh seeds beside the old trees.

Bardin laughed.

"We're leaving music behind."

An Ironhide elder smiled.

"And orchards."

The Broken Bridge

Late that afternoon...

the road ended abruptly.

An enormous gorge split the earth.

Nearly eighty meters below, a roaring river carved through black stone.

Spanning the chasm stood one of the greatest engineering achievements the expedition had yet discovered.

The Bridge of Ardent Passage.

Or rather...

what remained of it.

Its western towers still stood proudly.

Its eastern towers leaned dangerously toward the valley.

Most of the central span had collapsed centuries earlier.

Twisted bronze cables hung like broken vines.

Massive stone arches lay scattered across the riverbed below.

Silence settled over the expedition.

Even Lirion stood speechless.

"This..."

he whispered.

"...was built to last forever."

Reading the Past

No one rushed forward.

Instead, Dorion gathered every specialist.

Ironhide stonemasons.

Iron Legion engineers.

Veilkeeper scouts.

Nordfrost builders.

Hunters from the Serpent Wastes.

Each examined the bridge through the eyes of their own craft.

An elderly Ironhide mason ran weathered fingers across the fractured support columns.

"It didn't fail."

He pointed toward a section where the stone had melted smooth.

"It was struck."

Lirion examined the bronze suspension anchors.

"They tried to repair it."

He discovered ancient reinforcement plates bolted into the original framework.

"Someone kept this bridge standing during the First War."

The Veilkeeper scouts returned from the eastern tower.

"No enemy fortifications."

"No traps."

Only...

time.

The Workers of the Expedition

Dorion gathered everyone.

"We're not crossing this."

"We're rebuilding it."

No one complained.

Not even those eager to continue toward Borealis.

Immediately, the expedition transformed into a construction site.

Ironhide Clan warriors cleared massive stone blocks by hand.

Iron Legion engineers assembled portable lifting cranes powered by Battery Cells.

Sunscorched crawler riders hauled timber from nearby forests using their swift mechanical mounts.

Veilkeeper scouts mapped safe climbing routes beneath the bridge.

Hunters searched for food while carefully ensuring local wildlife would not be disturbed.

Even the children from Ash Hollow who had insisted on accompanying the caravan carried water and tools between the work crews.

No task was too small.

No helper was unimportant.

The Sleeping Workers

While clearing debris beneath the western tower...

Lirion noticed something unusual.

Half buried beneath fallen stone rested several bronze figures.

At first they appeared to be statues.

Then he recognized them.

Construction Automatons.

Unlike the maintenance guardians beneath Ash Hollow, these machines had never been built for war.

Each possessed enormous lifting arms, precision tools, and articulated mechanical hands capable of placing stones with astonishing accuracy.

Most had suffered severe damage when the bridge collapsed.

Several were beyond repair.

Their Battery Cores had long since gone silent.

Lirion knelt beside the nearest one.

He gently brushed away centuries of dust.

The machine's chest bore a simple inscription.

Bridge Builder Unit B-12

Not soldier.

Not guardian.

Builder.

Repair What Can Be Saved

Lirion carefully inspected every automaton.

Some had fractured beyond recovery.

Their bronze frames had fused into the fallen bridge itself.

He closed their maintenance panels with quiet respect.

"They've already given everything."

From those beyond saving, the engineers carefully removed usable gears, relay crystals, hydraulic joints, and stabilized Battery Cells.

Nothing was wasted.

Nothing was taken carelessly.

Every salvaged part was cataloged.

Every unit beyond repair was marked upon the expedition map so future generations would remember who had built the bridge.

Three automatons still retained intact Memory Cores.

Using restored relay components from Ash Hollow, Lirion and the engineers spent the afternoon rebuilding them.

As the sun lowered...

one automaton suddenly opened its blue eyes.

Its voice crackled softly.

"...Bridge Builder Unit B-12..."

"...construction assignment..."

It looked toward the broken span.

"...bridge incomplete..."

Lirion smiled warmly.

"Then let's finish it."

The Unexpected Guardians

The restored construction automatons immediately resumed their ancient duties.

Without hesitation, they began lifting stones far too heavy for humans.

Their movements were slow.

Precise.

Graceful.

One carefully repositioned a fallen support block exactly where it had rested centuries ago.

Another used a plasma shaping tool to smooth fractured edges before lowering them into place.

The expedition watched in amazement.

These machines had waited over a thousand years...

to finish their work.

Visitors of the Gorge

As reconstruction continued...

a loud cry echoed across the valley.

Several enormous Crystal Griffins circled above the bridge.

Their translucent feathers shimmered with blue light beneath the afternoon sun.

Young engineers instinctively reached for their rifles.

Dorion immediately raised his hand.

"No weapons."

The griffins descended onto nearby cliffs.

Watching.

Waiting.

One elderly hunter from the Serpent Wastes quietly smiled.

"They nested here."

He pointed toward broken stone ledges beneath the eastern tower.

"This bridge has been protecting them as much as they protected it."

The expedition adjusted its work area.

Leaving the nesting cliffs untouched.

Satisfied...

the griffins returned to their nests.

Sometimes...

respect achieved what force never could.

A Bridge Reborn

Three days passed.

Stone by stone.

Cable by cable.

Beam by beam.

The bridge slowly returned.

Not completely.

There would be years of work ahead before it matched its former glory.

But by the third evening...

a single reinforced lane stretched across the gorge.

Wide enough for wagons.

Strong enough for crawlers.

Safe enough for travelers.

As the first supply wagon rolled across...

everyone held their breath.

The ancient structure remained firm.

Cheers erupted across the valley.

Bardin lifted his violin.

Its triumphant melody echoed between the cliffs while the Crystal Griffins soared overhead.

The Founder's Road had taken another step toward becoming whole again.

Ending

That night...

while everyone celebrated around the campfires...

two Veilkeeper scouts inspected the eastern approach.

One suddenly knelt beside the freshly laid stone.

"There are footprints."

Not human.

Not mechanical.

Large.

Four-legged.

Fresh.

They continued eastward...

then vanished into the forest.

The older scout slowly stood.

"We're being watched."

Far beyond the trees...

hidden beneath the silver moonlight...

two luminous blue eyes quietly observed the restored bridge.

Then disappeared into the darkness.
